Aside from Dave Lombardo, Felix is the greatest thrash and punk drummer ever! Please pass that on to him, we were friends on faceback way back in the 90's
I never knew the story behind him leaving DRI. It really spoils my appreciation for them nowadays, knowing they screwed the guy over many times. I even contributed to Spike's cancer fund because I felt those guys were genuine and deserved my support. I should have sent money to Felix instead.
I met Felix when I was in Austin in the late 90s. My cousin Deedee dated a guitarist who played with them and I had the opportunity to go white water rafting with him, not only that I helped pop his shoulder back into socket out in the rapids. This dude is legendary and so down to earth. He even came and pick me up in a huge four-door crown Vic or something. I work now in the film industry with many famous actors but none of them compare to the legend.
Thanks for posting this, it seems like Felix just dropped off the face of the earth for a long time.... I saw Felix in action on both the Dealing With It and Crossover tours, the man is a Monster on drums. I wish him nothing but positive vibes and prayers and total success in the future!
Great interview. Crazy that so called friends and bandmates would screw Felix like that, especially in the “punk” industry where you’re supposed to be like brothers. That makes me sick knowing that after being a fan for about 30 years. I think I saw DRI more than any other band. Every time they played at the Sundance club in New York, on Long Island I-would go see them. Never disappointed, and fans didn’t hold back when it came to acting out their violent instincts. Felix was always a machine. Thank you. I lost my son of 22 years and can relate to him 110%. We both have other kids we have to think about and be there for. It’s hard on the other kid too bc they lost their brother/sister. It’s still a battle in my head everyday. It’s been just over 2 years.
Hey Felix! We've never met or if we've crossed paths, I might not have noticed it was you all of these years? I'm a long time musician in Austin and have spent a lot of time on Red River. I've been a big fan of your drumming since I was a teen (I'm about to turn 50). Like seriously, your playing style was my favorite part D.R.I.'s sound. (Dealing With It/Four of a Kind). I did not know that you were playing with Billy and M.O.D? We've been living in the same apartment complex for nearly a decade now and he 's been a long term mentor and supporter of mine. I wonder when was the last time you've been in contact with him? If you ever visit Austin, I would be thrilled to experience a short meet and greet with you. Keep rocking brother!
Wow!! Now after close to 33 years of listening to this band, now I know the mystic departure of this guy from the band. It wouldn't have been nice to also hear from Josh who left before Thrash zone was recorded. By the way Felix puts it up Josh might have been also screwed the same way. It is sad we can't get Josh story on what made him depart the band, but since he's dead we may never know.
Felix, if you're reading this or get to read this.. Back in the 80's i heard DRI for the first time, instantly you had me. I was a drummer for a Dutch band called Brain Implosion.. you were my idol and great inspiration..even to this day. Im no longer in a band drumming was medication for me.. it still is. Everything is rythm. I saw you with DRI in the BurgerWeeshuis in Deventer.. man that was awesome. Our paths in life are similar. I wish you the best. And think you a strong person.. the lost of your daughter ..i wish you the very best. I cant believe DRI members did you like that.. damn thats cold. Bastards..its the total opposite of what i thought DRI as a band was. I still play Crossover from time to time.. looking at the album sleeve . Brilliant finnish Zildjian cymbals tama drums.. man very cool. You influenced me big time. You can hear it too. Brain implosion demo Liquidation.. its on YT. Wish you the best. Is there any current material out were i can check out your drumming? I stumbled upon this interview and think its really great to hear from you..you were much more to me than just the drummer from DRI. It pulled me through a lot of sh*t. So you mean a lot more to me than you know. Wish you the best! Ian jason
Damn I never knew why he left the band after Thrash Zone. That’s messed up. Drums are just as important as the rest. That’s crazy cause he was on their best albums.
Although I don't know the other side of the story, he sounds genuine. If the story is true then how they treated him is dirty and rotten. But when it comes to the equal pay part I disagree to a degree. When recording, It should be proportional to the contribution to the music. But for the stage performance it may be split equal.
Felix is one of my all time favorite drummers. It's disgusting to hear his side of the story on why he left DRI. I think I just lost a lot of respect for Kurt, Josh and Spike. Never respected any record companies, so that didn't change.
I'm about 20 minutes into the video and I had to put out there how much dri suicidal yeah so dmod help me growing up. It was about 85 when I left out with Friends popping in some re-rerere-re-++ tapes that I redubbed of sod DRI, Mod, and The Accused. When I was like 10 or 11 living in Casper Wyoming. At 15 we live too Co springs and I met some friends that I'm still so lucky to have that listen to the same stuff. We get our best too learn it but I didn't have the skills and turns out they didn't either. My dad got busted for some weed we had to move across town and I couldn't make it to practice. Life happens for reasons only those in heaven know. But the last few times we got together I got a little redemption I love my past so much I still remember a lot of the a lot of the riffs. But man to hear his side of the story makes me want to go to the show in salt lake tomorrow and remind Kirk n them how and why they are special and by that I don't mean they themselves I mean dri the team. The only way you can put out stuff yourself as if you got synthesizers and computers which I am not even a fan of. Like one of my other heroes Joe Walsh I'm an analog. Man don't even like the dubbing Studio crap. Prince the only person I can think of that made an album all by himself. Not a fan. I believe if you put out an album you should be able to come play a show in my backyard with real instruments no backings or digital tricks just play it. In fact I enjoy your stuff that people post from shows they went to back in the day. Real... I can only try to know the feeling of losing your daughter my wife and I were married for 20 years kind of gave up on kids just enjoyed what my friends with her my family and my family had. Skiing, snowboarding and going to shows sometimes meeting up with my buddies from Colorado what's the blast. I feel guilty knowing my wife wanted kids I always told her want to come. Well 6 years ago my sister had the the greatest down syndrome baby that only had three chambers in his heart so they ended up flying them up to salt lake by me. Relatable my sister had bipolar and addiction kicking with all the drama so she kind of disappeared in between heart surgeries anyway it was all meant to be. And I truly believe everything everyday is part of a greater plan. It may not be what we planned but we will find out one day. And I truly believe you will be with your daughter one day you needed her for something down here and he needed her for something up there and cuz you Felix Care and share with such passion and I agree money stinks money stinks you already know why the city stinks. Somehow I dropped everything I must stay at home Dad broke never sad I'd rather be broke than walk. I don't expect it to happen but if you're ever in Utah or Colorado you've always got a place to stay I've got a duplex that we're probably going to do the Airbnb type thing and only rented out every once in awhile. So it's open you've got free room and board even if it's not you've at least got a room on my side. Don't want a dime!! Last stop the reason why I ended up here my buddy you just called me to persuade me to go to dri in the springs. In like 4 days can't do it I'm still recovering from slayers farewell we met in Vegas. After driving 15 hours wandering through a casino with a blind husky my son tore his feed you out and I was thinking what am I doing here ruining my family's Thanksgiving. that 3 hours truly was the most time I spent away from my son except for when he was tiny and in the hospital. I don't expect you to get this Felix and I am going to try to reach out other ways to let you know you're always welcome you don't know it but you in a big part of the plan I didn't plan. Rock on y'all!!
Felix was always the heart and soul of DRI. When he left it never was the same.
Legendary drummer...always KILLS it when he plays.
The Drummer is the Engine of the band Felix !!
Aside from Dave Lombardo, Felix is the greatest thrash and punk drummer ever! Please pass that on to him, we were friends on faceback way back in the 90's
Such an inspirational drummer
Soooo good to hear and see Felix !
Drummer #1 ! Kick ass & Built to survive 👊💥👊
Damn man, the reason he left DRI left me speechless
Yea you'd have thought the integrity of the band would respect the contributions of all members and not just it being a money-making enterprise.
I never knew the story behind him leaving DRI. It really spoils my appreciation for them nowadays, knowing they screwed the guy over many times. I even contributed to Spike's cancer fund because I felt those guys were genuine and deserved my support. I should have sent money to Felix instead.
No doubt
You're Fucking Awesome Felix ! One of my influences growing up... Thank you for all the great music and inspiration. Stay Up!!

Look at the Ritz video you were the happiest one ...Wow your amazing and.stay strong..
Thanks for this interview! Felix is a great drummer
there's two sides to every story, BUT...I love this guy and his playing for any band he is in, especially DRI.
Solid dude right there.
I still have 2 of his drumsticks he gave me after a DRI Gig in Melbourne in 1987
Saw this dude at First Ave. back in the day touring for Thrash Zone.
DRI @The Ritz…man, Felix tore it up. Super tight and great energy.

Love his drumming..dislike his politics.

I hung out w Felix for a while after he left DRI,and told me what had happened, and what he used to do.
Damn I never knew why he left the band after Thrash Zone. That’s messed up. Drums are just as important as the rest. That’s crazy cause he was on their best albums.
Best DRI drummer 💯💯💯
