I have a 2004 sl500 with 18,000 mls, full MB Chelsea service history. All fluids have been changed. Everything is working perfectly. It is a dream to drive.
Beautiful machine, easily the best designed SL since the gulwing. Yes it can be a pain to repair, but they are a fraction of what they cost originally & they still have massive presence on the road, it's simply a beautiful car with all the right design ingredients......it's 2018 & they still turn heads. The new aggressive front styled SL's will not age nearly as gracefully as these beauties have.
Great Review! This is very helpful to anyone interested in an SL! I bought mine last summer so did not have this info. Did not matter. I found a very clean SL500 that drove well and fell in love. Price of a used Honda for an exotic Mercedes! Now - I am a very experienced car enthusiast and can find out a lot in a test drive which most people would not notice. The top worked great , ABC went up and down, no engine lights , 59K miles, just detailed. Brakes worked fabulous - amazingly there was no rust on the rotors - a sure sign of a well cared for car. Unfortunately no receipts to go with the long maintenance history promised. This car has no dipsticks to check fluids - it is all in the dash off sensors. I was able to hook up my trusty Vacuum Gauge and simple electrical Amp and voltage tests and car was sound to drive anywhere. Car had just had valve cover leaks fixed and there was a lot of oil smell coming off the exhaust manifold. This did get better as car ran. oh yes - the parking brake would not engage. It was an easy fix under the dash. A few days after I got it home the car was listing and I thought I had a flat tire. No such luck, it was the ABC. Not a noticeable fluid leak - which will drop the car in a puddle, just a gradual sinking over several days. General consensus was an expensive ABC valve replacement. I replaced the rear accumulator for $120 and things improved markedly. A trickle charger on the rear battery ( car has two batteries) kept everything pumped up during the weeks of garage parking this past winter. Now that $120 repair and an oil change is all I had to do this year and contrasts nicely with the Thousands of dollars one mechanic quoted to get the ABC system fixed properly. Great Car!
MegaRugby2 you would have paid more and still probably had some expensive repairs to boot! ... I take mine to the dealer for repairs and generally get hosed but I get the chance to see the new ones for $100k plus and walk out feeling pretty good about my old car.
There is no maintenance schedule on the ABC (active body control) system from Mercedes Benz. This system gets neglected. The system needs flushing and filter change every 40k miles....at least!! Most people who've owned these vehicles did'nt do the maintenance or flushing of the ABC system. Those that bought used SL's did'nt know either and the system got neglected thereby the SL "bottoming" out or leaking costing several thousand dollars from the dealership or you can DIY yourself if you have the time, patience, and knowhow plus tools. Everything else is easy on this car IF you are mechanically savvy like: oil and oil filter change, air filter change (2x), front & rear brake pads, front & rear rotors, tranny fluid change, diff. fluid change, air cabin filter change (2x), spark plug change(8x) especially the cylinders closest to the fire wall as the hood(USA) or bonnet (UK) can unlatch and sit vertical 90 degrees relative to the vehicle.
joe r gonzales, every 25K is an even better interval for flushing the ABC oil. The cost is cheap compared to fixing the entire system when it explodes internally.
joe r Gonzales, you're right. We can only stress that it's up to the prospective buyer to do their research on these luxury cars to avoid expensive repairs.
I have one of the 2004 sl500's amazing car but at 15 years old I have had multiple issues with bad seals and blocked drain holes throughout the chassis. These have been the main issues with the car since owning it for a year. Mechanically and even electronically it's been great. No warning issues with on board computer. No abc issues etc so far. Even had a diagnostic check last year with no errors on it. Despite some stored CAN errors the first time I dropped it into the specialist. I had a lot of servicible parts to change when i bought the car and unfortunately where the car had been used sparingly rust had developed on the discs and rear parking brake inner drum. So ok not technically all mechanically sound but mostly serviceable parts that needed doing. My advice is that you can pick these cars up for great prices now. But beware ones with either really high or low mileage. Because ones with low are likely to have been left on a drive outside for rust to develop etc. You should probably allow at least £2000 on top of your budget to get the car up to scratch when you buy it. Also debatable about swapping the ABC fluid every 4 years. I've read and was advised by my local specialist that actually the best chance for it can just be to leave it. Even introducing small amounts of dirt and water into the system by continuously swapping the fluid out might be potentially more damaging than good. I'm not sure but I've been advised to leave it well alone. There is also the potential issue with the 7 speed gearbox. I understand these are meant to be sealed for life but eventually these do go bad and swapping the gearbox oil does prevent this. So it's something I plan to do later this year. SBC pump is a potential problem though as no way round that if that goes bad. £1700 repair job just so you're aware. If you get the boot leak fix it asap to stop your pse pump underneath going bad. I've got a bit of foam covering this as well to give it some extra protection. If you get an ABC fail bear in mind i think new struts are £1000. New valve block £3000. Whole system is about £12000 to replace I think. Might be worth fixing if you get a leaking strut but otherwise just spend the money to do a suspension conversion so you never have to deal with it again. Think struttmasters do a purpose built coil over system to replace the ABC system on the sl. That's pretty much all my knowledge on my 2nd hand luxury sports car experiment so far. Also just don't buy one if you rely on a car to get you about. I bought one because I only use it on weekends and don't need it for commute etc. So if it falls into disrepair I'm not totally screwed.
Just buy an SL with full Mercedes dealership service history. Do your carfax to confirm the number of possible owners, make sure the hydraulic oils were changed regularly and never ever forget to track the maintenance of the timing chain. Once its not a flood or accident car, you should be relatively okay.
Owned a 2003 SL500 for 10 years. Roof system broke many times, ABC broke many times, both until there just seemed to be no sense in fixing them again. I got rid of it. Also, the COMAND display screen had become almost unreadable at the end, as did the small display windows for the odometer and warning messages. It was great while it was great, especially the engine, but by the end, it just wasn't worth having, as the enjoyment was gone.
almost left with the music, but I'm glad I stayed. Good info. Car Wizard recommend the 2009-2011 years, stating that earlier years have hydraulically actuated roofs whose mechanisms can leak, spraying all over you and the car's interior. The 2009-2011 models should have electro-mechanical roof mechanisms according to the Car Wizard. If anyone can confirm, that would be great.
I have 2007 AMG and never have any problem, regular maintenance that I do in my garage, friend of mine have 2006 with 226.000 miles minor problems only , he is driving every day , mine only coming out on nice sumer day ! So many experts on you tube, according to them you shouldn't buy any car!
I have one. It’s only a 2008 SL350. However, I bought for the spec, mileage, condition and service history. Silver with black leather and dark wood interior, ventilated seats and panoramic roof. I bought it 5 years ago with 29k miles on the clock and paid significantly more than the going rate for one in the UK at the time. It’s now got 40k and I only use it for long European road trips. It’s been to Spain, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany several times, Denmark and Sweden. In fact, I’m in Germany with it now and going to northern Denmark in it next week! And then from there all the way down to Angouleme in SW France before returning to the UK. Even though it’s only the 350, on trips like this, it’s fast enough (I have other faster cars at home). The only thing that I wonder is how much better it would be if it had ABC? Mine just has normal springs and shocks. At the time, I wanted a car without ABC because I got scared by all the stories about the repair costs.
Had a red 2006 Sl 55 Amg I loved everything about the car power comfort but very expensive to maintain you will go broke unless you have a good extended warranty So if you get one make sure you get a good extended warranty it will save you thousands
Rust? These cars are fully galvanized, so if there is rust on body panels, the only reasonable explanation must be that a previous owner has sanded the body or performed some kind of repair.
I bought my used 05' SL500 w/AMG Sport Pkg in 07' . Love the look and style but, have had a number of times in the shop for repair over the years. It's been running fine for about a year but, am getting some engine noise thats bugging me to death! If it's the ABC pump I'm going to be very upset!
When hearing of the common and expensive problems of these Mercedes...if only they could lay that great-looking body over a simpler 60s car with a 350 and 4-speed!
I have one of these it is a 2004 SL600 V12 Twin turbo from factory it had 593HP and even more torque. RennTech ECU reprogram added 115 HP and upgraded intercooler pump that doubles the flow of the special coolant system that cools intake air, adds another 40HP. I now have 748HP and 840 foot pounds of torque. The engine is the Maybach engine de-tuned for the SL! The M275 is an awesome bulletproof engine with no timing chain problems. Car went 88000 miles on original spark plugs and then the left side coilpack quit, probably as a result of spark plug gap increasing due to wear, expected! A guy in California rebuilds those coilpacks excellently for half the cost or new from Mercedes, and I got all new (24) spark plugs and the car is Perfect again. Car cost $136,000 when new and I bought it for a hell of a lot less than that, it still looks, runs and drives as new. Very few other cars compare.
The braking and suspension components are expensive, but the engine and transmission are pretty simple, and very reliable. Alex from legit streetcars calls the M113 engine the chevy small block of Mercedes. Mercedes uses the same front engine rear drive layout with the same engines and transmissions through almost the entire lineup, so parts are plentiful, and they are surprisingly easy to work on.
The balance shaft on the SL 350 is known to give major problems if you have to replace it the cost is £5000 it is an engine rebuild ... PLEASE BE AWARE
The balancer shaft is only a concern on the 2006 onwards 3.5 engine. Cars built 2002 - 2005 were 3.7 engines and had no significant problems if maintained regularly by a Mercedes specialist or dealership.
You forgot broken air lines under the seats that control the seats. The rear locking latch, the accumulators fo bad, shocks and torque control arms. There are other things too so you better know how to fix cars yourself. Mine is broken now and I have to change out all 3 accumulators due to red ABC light temporarily coming on after hitting dip in road.
good power but my 2003 sl 500 has not been all good there is a power draw from somewhere that drains the battery in a day , also the heat does not work blows cold air only . my suspention goes low after 10 min of taking the key fob out or parked in the same spot for a while. The car then rises when i put it in drive ,so i have to fix these gremlins
That's a 2009......@ 5:14 the changes to the front came in 2009. another give away that its a 2009 is the vent design behind the front tires on the side panels...they are different.
I have issues with my SL 350 2003. The central lock system isn’t responding to my fobs and the key is not turning in the ignition. I tried every trick in the book but nothing works. I cant turn my car on now for a week.
Issues one might run into with the V12 are the ABC hydraulic system all it needs is new fluid every 3 to 4 years, pretty simple actually, there are DIY videos on how it's done, then there's SBC Brake fluid and regular brake fluid to be replaces every 3 to 4 years as well, and spark plugs in the V12 there are 24 of them but I changed mine all myself, not everyone can do it but it wasn't particularly hard. For the amount of car you get I don't think there are many other cars that have the same value, the V12 SL600 were about $130,000 when new and can be bought now for a huge depreciation. My car spent 1.5 years in Brooklyn NY before the owner moved to Arizona and has always been well maintained and garage kept, car looks, runs, drives like new. I can't find any car that is this awesome, to replace it with. The mods you can do to the V12 SL600 are RennTech ECU and upgraded intercooler pump, bring your HP from 493 to well over 600 then do the rear muffler delete, My SL600 has 648HP. It's really too much and I cannot let anyone else EVER drive the car. EVER!!!!!!!
yo! great review! did you know mercedes did a facelift on the SL series from 2003 to 2004 models as well? I have an 2004 SL500 and the front and back bumpers look different (better in my opinion) than the 2003 model
Comparing the reliability of any R230 to ANY W220 from the period proves the point and completely confirms your lack of knowledge for Mercedes Benz mechanics 110%. I am not saying the R230 is the "Toyota Camry" of the Mercedes-Benz period lineup by any means; they can be plagued with electrical issues, The a BC or “active body control“ system can lead to power steering/full suspension failure and leave you with a $15-$18,000USD bill if the OEM oil for the pump/power steering/suspension-ABC runs dry sending shrapnel through the entire system, the convertible top is 1/3 the weight of the whole vehicle and is prone to rust especially at the rear window seal start to go bad that leaking into the trunk haven of the vehicle then causes the electrical issues from hell as every EC you in this vehicle does not like moisture including the transmission control module or “conductor plate” convertible top seals especially in the AMG variance there are even more toys that break - owning one of the 18 total 2009 SL65 AMG Black Series that is painted flat white from the factory with a tuxedo or white interior - Google "project unicorn SL65 after my rant. However; all of that being said the W220 is the most unreliable self-destructive heap of junk ever to come out of any Mercedes-Benz production factory line up. **That is an OPINION and that is MY opinion AND opinions are like a**h***s, EVERYBODY has one!! However, I have never seen another vehicle that from the factory if left running in the light and has painted a dark color literally melts the wiring harness just by running at idle in heat in temperatures over 100°F - common here in the states on any given day in the spring/summer months. I have literally seen W220's with less than 30,000 miles - especially the S63 ÂMG Roll in with head bolts that rust or corrode then break off, wiring harness is not meant to self-destruct until the vehicle hits the scrapyard self-destructing within the first 10 years of ownership, H ID headlamps intended to last a lifetime melting the Balis and headlight assemblies after merely running for an hour after the vehicle left the show room. Keep in the way of all this data that I am a staggering 33 years of age and no, I am definitely NOT some trust fund brat that has had the opportunity to grow up with these vehicles around so I must’ve been around these things for quite some time in another way.
I think you should start to make videos about cars which are more common in the Europe, cars like Opel, Ford, Citroen, Peugeout, Skoda, Seat, Volvo, Renault.....
My coilpack on one side of engine went out after 88K miles, I think if spark plugs had been changed at 75K it would have been fine, they were original plugs in there, they put 24 in the engine 2 per cylinder and its a bit of work to replace them so people wait till it quits running right. Mercedes dealer probably wants $500-600 or more to replace those spark plugs, and $1400 for one coilpack. So I got the coilpack rebuilt for $700 and all new plugs for $300 and good as new again. If you have a V12 and your coil pack quits there's a guy in Calif who rebuilds them half the cost of new, and they are perfect. With twin turbos you use ONLY the exact plugs that the owner manual specifies, Iridium not platinum. I didn't cry too hard after 88K miles, it's a simple repair and being smart doing the work myself, was fun, the car is nothing less than Awesome.
Thank you for your insights. Was just about to spend more for a 2006 SL Will consider your insights and ensure prospects pass those tests Am i better to buy say an excellent 2004 and hold onto the extra for potential repairs?
Thanks for your prompt reply Given i live in an urban worked these days, with little chance of really stretching those SL500 legs, What if i bought a 2006 SL350 would i have a less complicate suspension car, albeit needing to watch the timing chain repalcment Appreciate you giving us all so much
well, you know, if you buy the SL350 - (M272 engine code) from 2006 then it can have the already mentioned timing chain issue, however if you find a car in which the owner fixed this possible problem by replacing the balance shaft/timing chain, then it is a good choice on the other side, if you buy a model made before 2006 which has either the 3.7 l V6 - M112 engine code, or the 5.0 l V8 - M113 engine code, then you won't have any major problems with the engine
Your web articles helped me immensely and I lifted my budget and bought a 2007 SL500 (R230)with only 66,000 on the odometer. Had a full Mercedes Benz dealer pre inspection report and it identified a few minor issues (hopefully) which are now being fixed. The R230 driving experience exceeds my R129 memory. Thanks again
Good idea to check the Convienience close / Summer Opening feature works properly. The system uses the Infra Red transmitter on the tip of the key and receivers on both front door handles. This feature not working is common, caused by 'dry solder joints' developing on the IR receivers. The PCB's are expensive to replace £500 + labour + VAT each. It's a very useful feature especially in tight car parks. If opening the door fully is a problem opening the roof from outside allows you to slip down easily into the seat it's also useful in the summer opening up the car before you get in. Both of my sensors on a 2009 SL500 did not work decided to fit a Mods4cars "SmartTOP" STLFMZ1 th-cam.com/video/ANW8514s7B4/w-d-xo.html does a lot more than the factory fitted kit and a lot cheaper than replacement PCB's. Great Review.
I have a 2004 XL 55 AMG I love the looks of this car and the performance it is only 59,000 miles and I plan to keep it so far I have had problems number one with a keyless entry number two,cam shaft position sensor a $30 piece that had to be replaced and the gearshift lock again another cheap plastic part. The latter two resulted in having the car flat bedded to to repair shop. And being stranded. I have had no problems with the hydraulic suspension so far could you please recommend a coil over suspension replacement. Is it possible to buy a standard suspension system OEM that is used in the standard suspension versions of this car. Thank you for your very informative TH-cam videos
Help!!!! I am torn. I am retired and about to buy my last two cars ever. I sold my 850i BMW to make room for an SL. I own a wide bodied Z3 and an A Class Merc. I plan to buy an ML for the wife in Sept. and an SL for myself for my Birthday in March. Then I saw for the 1st. time, the CLK Cabrio. SL pluses: 1. Image. It is my dream, and it makes the statement (I have arrived at success!) 2. Hard top convert plus glass panel roof as an option. 3. Suitable replacement from the Big Boy Status Slanted nosed BMW Legend. 4. Collectable. I can sell it for for what ever I buy for. SL Cons: 1. regular maintenence 2. insurance 3. 2 seater CLK pluses: 1. looks Good. 2. Higher cuality of luxury interior. 3. 4 Seats = wife and kids or 3 Masons. 3. Less costly to maintain 4. Newer 5. Speedster humps behind the pacs CLK Cons. 1. Soft top roof 2. Only prestigiouse still, here in Spain. 3.for the same money I can buy an SL. 4. Self accomplishment, but no self gratifiCATION. So I pose the question: Which would you buy and Why?
The CLK is the more reasonable option that's for sure, but a dream is a dream. If you find an SL which is in great condition and the previous owner took good care of it, then I would go for the SL. You need to check the car properly before buying-find somebody who knows everything about these cars or take it to the service/Mercedes dealer for the inspection. Of course you need to change all the fluids regulalry and keep a couple of thousands for the maintance costs. Also if you want an SL or basically any more modern Mercedes, then the best is to find a good independent specialist who can do the regular maintance/repair the car. Because the Mercedes dealer is really expensive.
Buy the SL. WAY more car for the money. And, a retractable hard top?? Icing on the cake. Mine has been mostly trouble-free; she was well-loved by previous owner. I have to say, best car I've EVER owned!!!
A.J. - I previously had a CLK cabrio and presently have an SL500. Both are great cars and drive very well. Even though the soft top is padded and insulated, the CLK is much noisier inside the cabin at highway speeds than the SL. Which one to choose depends on how YOU feel about the soft top and whether you are buying for yourself and your own happiness, or you are buying to impress other people. If you are doing it for image, that means the SL. I recommend a well-maintained 2003-2005 SL. They are very reasonably priced at 85% to 90% discount from new. Preventive maintenance on the ABC suspension and SBC brake system is mandatory. If you are not a mechanic, the SL can be expensive to repair, and will make you wish you had bought a CLK.
Thank you my friend, a very good video, I am looking at buying a 2005 SL350. Are they basicly a good car? reliable? It has a good service history buy mercedes dealership.
But it is an unreliable piece of shit.... I saw a clean example, and it was still unreliable. THe roof had mood swings (would only open if it felt like it), and the boot just simply did not like me enough to open as well. Funny thing, just the previous day, both had worked fine
I sincerely like this car, I like the design, the driving pleasure. But my reason doesn't let me be this stupid to buy such an unreliable vehicle. Better spend money on a MB with guarantee even though I don't like the new designs of the cabrios.
The person that wrote this review is obviously a wannabe. He should go back to waiting tables because he doesn’t know Dick about our 230s or any Mercedes I’ve driven R2 30s for over 10 years I own three that are 17 years old. I have never had a problem with any of them only time there’s a problem is if the owner is cheap and doesn’t really have the money to afford maintaining the car properly, like I say whoever wrote this review should go back to waiting tables which she would probably be maybe better at
ΛNNΛ ΣΜΜΛ look up reviews. I’m thinking about buying one my self. However they’re just so unreliable. It breaks my heart how such a beautiful car can be so dangerous when it comes to your money
Good build quality ??? Rattle on roof and leaks? Electronic nightmares? Etc.....that’s not good build quality, unreliable heap of shit......nice to look At, and most of the time spent looking at it, will be in the repair shop.....buy Japanese if you want a hassle free life, and buy this if you want a nightmare
yeah man, I had a 96 and theyre built like tanks. I have no personal experience with the r230 but from what I've read its really not on par with the build quality of the r129 and goes wrong much more often. That said I would still love to own one but you just cant beat the r129 for the price. Btw the hardtop is removable with an automatic soft top underneath.
I bought my used 05' SL500 w/AMG Sport Pkg in 07' . Love the look and style but, have had a number of times in the shop for repair over the years. It's been running fine for about a year but, am getting some engine noise thats bugging me to death! If it's the ABC pump I'm going to be very upset!

any chance you plan to make a vid on the r129 in the future?
different car review please make a r129 video
that would be awesome
I have a 2004 sl500 with 18,000 mls, full MB Chelsea service history. All fluids have been changed. Everything is working perfectly. It is a dream to drive.
Beautiful machine, easily the best designed SL since the gulwing. Yes it can be a pain to repair, but they are a fraction of what they cost originally & they still have massive presence on the road, it's simply a beautiful car with all the right design ingredients......it's 2018 & they still turn heads.
The new aggressive front styled SL's will not age nearly as gracefully as these beauties have.
So great Steve Jobs would buy one every three months
Great Car!
Wish I had this review before I bought mine. Other a good price but after repairs I could have just got one in better condition to begin with
MegaRugby2 you would have paid more and still probably had some expensive repairs to boot!
I love your videos. Informative, funny, factual and good car choice. All the best!
Another excellent and helpful review. Informative , no poncing around and straight to the point . Just how I like it . 👌
The ABC MALFUNTION HAS COME ON PERIODICALLY ON MY 2011 SL550. I DIDNT KNOW THAT IT NEEDED TO BE FLUSHED EVERY 40,000 MILES. THANK YOU
I have one of the 2004 sl500's amazing car but at 15 years old I have had multiple issues with bad seals and blocked drain holes throughout the chassis.
After all these listed ..I think I will be looking out for a R129…
Just purchased a 2003 SL500 great car and beautiful. Like any German engineered vehicle it does come with expensive maintenance
This is very well researched, so thanks!
This review was very helpful for me understanding my 2006 SL 500 . The 2006 SL 500 is my favorite out of the SL 500 . Thanks for the review
Great video to watch before going to buy one. Thanks.
almost left with the music, but I'm glad I stayed.
My boss have this car , still rocking on 2019
that's a nice way to refer to yourself
This car will rock till end of the world's
Valuable information mate. Thank you so much.
Rust? These cars are fully galvanized, so if there is rust on body panels, the only reasonable explanation must be that a previous owner has sanded the body or performed some kind of repair.
Mine rusted over the rear wheel arches. Common fault.
Mine is rusting below rear back window
I bought my used 05' SL500 w/AMG Sport Pkg in 07' . Love the look and
style but, have had a number of times in the shop for repair over the
years. It's been running fine for about a year but, am getting some
engine noise thats bugging me to death! If it's the ABC pump I'm going
to be very upset!
Just picked up a 2008 SL550, two owner car with only 9200 miles....... They're out there, you just gotta look!
I heard the 2009+ were fairly reliable, especially if the service history is well documented.
very helpful thank you, I have a 2004 R230 SL350 wiht 94,000 miles, I guess I should check the timing chain
What about the cluster? I think there is some problems when it get old
The balance shaft on the SL 350 is known to give major problems if you have to replace it the cost is £5000 it is an engine rebuild ... PLEASE BE AWARE
The balancer shaft is only a concern on the 2006 onwards 3.5 engine. Cars built 2002 - 2005 were 3.7 engines and had no significant problems if maintained regularly by a Mercedes specialist or dealership.
Very informative and helpful video. Thank you.
Correction the big face lift in the US is the 2009 model not 2008.
very informative - R230 sold in the US was from 2003 to 2011, the R129 last year was 2002.
Thank you so much for the review an maintenance info.
I have the slk r171 and this car is like the big brother of my car :)
Do a R129 sl please and thank you. By the way awesome video
excellent review =b
You forgot broken air lines under the seats that control the seats. The rear locking latch, the accumulators fo bad, shocks and torque control arms. There are other things too so you better know how to fix cars yourself. Mine is broken now and I have to change out all 3 accumulators due to red ABC light temporarily coming on after hitting dip in road.
Did you fix this stuff? Is it something someone can do in their own garage?
@@ToddLloyd you can do it if you are willing to study the system and do the work. I am rebuilding the entire ABC on my 03
the trunk latch repair cost me 55$ it is easy
good power but my 2003 sl 500 has not been all good there is a power draw from somewhere that drains the battery in a day , also the heat does not work blows cold air only . my suspention goes low after 10 min of taking the key fob out or parked in the same spot for a while. The car then rises when i put it in drive ,so i have to fix these gremlins
We own this SL generation and none of those problems have occurred besides the roof not operating correct
What about the electric problems on the 2004
You didn't mention SL 55?
That's a 2009......@ 5:14 the changes to the front came in 2009. another give away that its a 2009 is the vent design behind the front tires on the side panels...they are different.
The predecessor is the R129, your video still shows R230 on the screen when you showed the images of the predecessor made between 1980 and 2001 :-)
fucking hell :D You're right, my mistake...
I have issues with my SL 350 2003. The central lock system isn’t responding to my fobs and the key is not turning in the ignition. I tried every trick in the book but nothing works. I cant turn my car on now for a week.
batteries on the keys
what about the sl55 amg ??????????
my favourite sl!
ps
what is the metal song at the beginning of the video?
regards
What about problems in the V12 Models ? Are there any issues ?
EVER!!!!!!!
The noise on the roof is true!
Hi can you do a review on bmw 6 series. 2005-2009
yo! great review! did you know mercedes did a facelift on the SL series from 2003 to 2004 models as well? I have an 2004 SL500 and the front and back bumpers look different (better in my opinion) than the 2003 model
You may just have the AMG styling package.
Nice car
Review the base Mercedes CLK 200 kompressor w209/c209 please.
I think you should start to make videos about cars which are more common in the Europe, cars like Opel, Ford, Citroen, Peugeout, Skoda, Seat, Volvo, Renault.....
Alex George Who cares about Peugeot, Skoda, Seat, Opel, Renault?
hmm nothing about the v12 coil packs inevitably going out.
Most often its the Electronic Box on top of the motor a very simple fix!!
How do i Know if the Benz SL has ABC?
@William Crawford why keep making shit up? you know nothing.
Thank you for your insights. Was just about to spend more for a 2006 SL
Will consider your insights and ensure prospects pass those tests
Am i better to buy say an excellent 2004 and hold onto the extra for potential repairs?
yes, I would definitely keep some extra money for the aditional repairs, and don't forget to change the hydraulic fluid in the ABC suspension
Thanks for your prompt reply
Given i live in an urban worked these days, with little chance of really stretching those SL500 legs,
What if i bought a 2006 SL350 would i have a less complicate suspension car,
albeit needing to watch the timing chain repalcment
Appreciate you giving us all so much
well, you know, if you buy the SL350 - (M272 engine code) from 2006 then it can have the already mentioned timing chain issue, however if you find a car in which the owner fixed this possible problem by replacing the balance shaft/timing chain, then it is a good choice
on the other side, if you buy a model made before 2006 which has either the 3.7 l V6 - M112 engine code, or the 5.0 l V8 - M113 engine code, then you won't have any major problems with the engine
Thanks again
can u make a video on SL 600?
Ato Nymph
Worlds best built Car!!
Thank you for your very informative TH-cam videos
do not put coils on it. repl the accumulators, fluid and filter.
Help!!!!
SL pluses:
1. Image. It is my dream, and it makes the statement
(I have arrived at success!)
2. Hard top convert plus glass panel roof as an option.
3. Suitable replacement from the Big Boy Status Slanted nosed BMW Legend.
4. Collectable. I can sell it for for what ever I buy for.
SL Cons:
1. regular maintenence
2. insurance
3. 2 seater
CLK pluses:
1. looks Good.
2. Higher cuality of luxury interior.
3. 4 Seats = wife and kids or 3 Masons.
3. Less costly to maintain
4. Newer
5. Speedster humps behind the pacs
CLK Cons.
1. Soft top roof
2. Only prestigiouse still, here in Spain.
3.for the same money I can buy an SL.
4. Self accomplishment, but no self gratifiCATION.
So I pose the question:
Which would you buy and Why?
William Crawford , that is a blanketed statement,... incorrect. You get what you pay for.
If you are not a mechanic, the SL can be expensive to repair, and will make you wish you had bought a CLK.
that fucking rock music man,...
Thank you my friend, a very good video, I am looking at buying a 2005 SL350. Are they basicly a good car? reliable? It has a good service history buy mercedes dealership.
Do the R129 please
Video 1👍... but the sound for the video sucks ....
230 sounds like "too dirty". 😂 😂
Or "Tooth hurty"
I had to watch 2x 20 seconds commercial just to start the video. What is going on with youtube?
I have this car ..sl550
:O my face when he said “shit”!
ive seen the 04 with under 80k miles for 14,000!!!! that tells you something money pitt!!!
Buy yourself a cd service manual on the Car!
It’s a Mercedes, of course things are going to be expensive to repair no matter how old or good condition it is.
But it is an unreliable piece of shit.... I saw a clean example, and it was still unreliable. THe roof had mood swings (would only open if it felt like it), and the boot just simply did not like me enough to open as well. Funny thing, just the previous day, both had worked fine
Hello dears
I have sl55 lorinser 2003
With panorama roof
I want to sell it
If any one interest please reply me
said alsiyabi hello is your sl55 still available
@@ODB357 Hello Mr.Jorge
No,i was sold it
I sincerely like this car, I like the design, the driving pleasure. But my reason doesn't let me be this stupid to buy such an unreliable vehicle. Better spend money on a MB with guarantee even though I don't like the new designs of the cabrios.
up to 2007 the sl looked better

Yes good coopeh Germany cars👍
Do a Citroen C6.
That background music put me off the video
the song is a rip off from one of metallica'/s
The person that wrote this review is obviously a wannabe. He should go back to waiting tables because he doesn’t know Dick about our 230s or any Mercedes I’ve driven R2 30s for over 10 years I own three that are 17 years old. I have never had a problem with any of them only time there’s a problem is if the owner is cheap and doesn’t really have the money to afford maintaining the car properly, like I say whoever wrote this review should go back to waiting tables which she would probably be maybe better at
She in this review meant he I’m assuming he’s a guy or maybe a guy who knows
no cars more expensive than a used highmiles German car
do not buy these cars are the worst on the market
ΛNNΛ ΣΜΜΛ look up reviews. I’m thinking about buying one my self. However they’re just so unreliable. It breaks my heart how such a beautiful car can be so dangerous when it comes to your money
mercedes parts are expensive do your research it's not worth the risk @ΛNNΛ ΣΜΜΛ
R129 is better
Piece of shit😂😂😂... nice review, Just purchased a SL600
Crossing this money pit off the list, lol
get an r129 instead!
My dad has a '98 SL500, feels completely bulletproof, with fixed hard top roof
yeah man, I had a 96 and theyre built like tanks. I have no personal experience with the r230 but from what I've read its really not on par with the build quality of the r129 and goes wrong much more often. That said I would still love to own one but you just cant beat the r129 for the price. Btw the hardtop is removable with an automatic soft top underneath.

Wrong music for an R230.
