I would describe Red Dragon a as a re-adaptation of the novel. I think it took one or two things from Manhunter, such as the fakeout scare with Graham’s family in the middle of the movie after they decipher Lecter’s note to Dolarhyde. But it feels to me like they went back to the book for the bulk of the writing. I actually really like this one. I might like it better than Manhunter because of Ralph (pronounced “rafe”) Fiennes’ performance, but that is in no way meant to be a slight against Manhunter. Manhunter is a very stylized take on a very good story, and is hard to say much anything bad about it
on the subject of the tattoo, [ im a tattooist ] I can say it's done well and looks very realistic, the whip shading on the tribal elements sitting on his shoulders is spot on in terms of that patchy look you get from average skill artists. it looks like black work with no greys applied to smoothen it out. 10/10
I quite enjoyed Red Dragon… but it was no Silence of the Lambs. I think I prefer Manhunter. So glad you guys reviewed it though. You’re my go-to for rational reviews!!!
I feel like the cast for Manhunter just in total did better with less than the cast from Red Dragon. Which isn't to discount some excellent performances as I think Ralph Fiennes and Emily Watson absolutely stole the story. Manhunter also has that slight charm of just being an older movie, though, so I may be biased.
@@fallingpetunias9046 no I totally agree. Manhunter is a very stripped back character study with a morbid tone. Whilst Red Dragon is serviceable (and does have some great performances), it feels very glossy. Having said that, maybe with a different director it could’ve been even better.
My mom read Red Dragon, and it scared her so bad because the killer targeted families similar to ours. She wouldn’t read it if my dad was doing the night shift.
Strange occurrence, considering how brilliant the cast of actors is that I find this movie a case of the whole being less than the sum of its parts. I particularly enjoyed Emily Watson's performance, though.
Saw this in the cinema, for some reason. Wasn’t a fan of Silence of the Lambs but felt compelled to go watch Red Dragon for some reason. It’s . . . fine
I read red dragon years before manhunt loved it and I realy prefer the film manhunt and also the series for their depiction of will graham and the relationship with his fbi boss z
Back in the day this was a great idea, Hanibal Lecter is one the iconic characters of cinema and the concept of prequels was not as prominent or common as it is nowadays, so a history leading to the silence of the lambs and the return of Anthony Hopkins was fascinating, the movie itself has cool things going on and is well made, however, indeed other adaptations of the source material turn out better
Sitting here in my shop, on my mountain. About to apply my trade of carpentry. And i get the alert that the boys across the pond dropped this magnificent review on this movie! Thank you boys. You just made my night much better!
what mountain? criminal how these guys dont have a mill plus subs by now, been here since they started with the low quality mics and Ian's reservedness before he got confident. may they continue
You guys have become my fav film review show, even above rlm. Keep it up. Not many channels introduce me to stuff i havent seen but you huys gave a few times. I would like to suggest the weird genre twisting Kolobos.
I hate to use this very overused term, but Red Dragon is absolutely "mid." It has a lot of the right ingredients, a great scriptwriter, a terrific cast, a bombastic Danny Elfman score and was being billed as a return to form after the divisive reception to Hannibal. But....its kind of dull, unmemorable and workmanlike overall. A serviceable sequel that gets worse with age as you realise just how unremarkable it was.
For me neither movie captured Francis Dolerhyde because he is supposed to be of Schwarzenegger proportions but meek and mild in personality. A complete contradiction. That is a huge aspect of the character in the book. I agree with you guys that a lot of this film seems contrived and that the actors either over played or under performed their parts. I’m still hoping for a version worthy of the book. Great review as always.
I know it isn't a movie, but I wonder if you guys would be open to reviewing the Hannibal TV series. Gary already said that it was good, but it'd be fun to hear you guys talk about it in more detail 😊
Hey there duskripper! We did have a podcast a while back where Andy and I discussed Hannibal - th-cam.com/video/Cdqaiz7leXQ/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=OffTheShelfReviews Hope you find this interesting. Iain and I don't have any plans to review full shows in our current format just yet. But you never know. Cheers for watching. Gary
Red Dragon is not terrible, it's just not as memorable or impactful as it should have been. Norton's performance is very disappointing; I'm not sure what emotion or attitude he thought he was portraying, but he just looks tired all the time! Honestly, this could have been a better movie with a better actor as the hero. I do agree that the film spends a bit too much time with the Tooth Fairy when it could have given Will Graham more development.
My grandmother LOVES the books! And she LOVES Anthony Hopkins! He was the only reason she watched those films. Both Silence and Red Dragon are good films to her, but Anthony Hopkins was the real reason she kept going back. As for myself, I'm not too crazy about these films honestly. But I can understand why my grandmother and many fans find them entertaining! And Anthony Hopkins is an awesome actor! He deserves every praise givin! Great review guys!
I'm finally early and I been waiting on this review, yes! Seriously though, I was just re-watching this movie three days ago. Do Gary and Ian have mystical powers or something, lol?
I'm surprised they didn't mention that Red Dragon and Manhunter share the same director of photography, Dante Spinotti. Why go through the trouble of getting him and just, yes, copy the look of Silence of the Lambs.
Me and my brother really love movies where Edward Norton plays the badguy..request guys: "Glass Onion" I am curious what's your vision on that one..btw This is a great review..the movie ..I had mixed feelings but it is filled with good intentions and performances in general.
The books are miles better than their respective films. Also it doesn't matter what someone has done. They cannot listen to conversations between a person and their lawyer.
That's Howard Shore for you. See also his music for David Cronenberg's films. It's weird that he is now best known for his swashbuckling Lord of the Rings scores.
I saw manhunter live, and as a part of my Psych 1 class in highschoo Because my teacher knew that we were interested in crazy people who killed people, not the ones who cut off their dicks, when I was 15. It was not the best movie, but I think it REALLY focused on the story more than the flair of the environment.
How to ruin a perfectly good story with a great cast of some of the best actors of their time and turn it into a piece of crap. my love of the original movie (manhunter) is more than even The Silence of the lambs and I know it’s a better quality movie but I saw manhunter first and it will always be my favourite.
Surprised you didn’t mention that they used the same person for the cinematography as Manhunter. it looks terrible as they wanted that gothic look of silence of the lambs and the star studded cast are awful and there is too much Hannibal in it and that ending was obvious that he did the switch when you don’t see him dying. I can’t say enough bad things about this movie if I did I would be here all night and day and turn into someone like the Tooth fairy.
2:45 I don't think that's fair. They are both based on the same book. It wasn't strictly remaking the movie it was just doing the book again. 12:56 Because thats how it was it the book. Like its not copying its using the same source material. Its like making lord of the rings then say chaning helms deep battle to be in the middle of the day because itd be to simmilar to peter jacksons. Like its just not a fair criticism 17:34 Where'd you get that from? They are speaking nice together sure in the overtext but the subtext is they hate one another, Will is power playing Lecter because he knows him, and Lecter hates that and hates Will. Lecter enjoyed playing with Clarease and toying with her and leading her to the answer Will and Lecter's relationship is the opposite.
is it me or has Ian got that glassy red eye going on haha, im confused about the shotgun to the stomach later on, the way i remembered it didn't make sense in terms of sequence of events.
This movie isn't too bad. Bret Ratner is a fine director. He is no stylist, but he can put together a movie. Its probably the second worst Lector movie. Hannibal is such a bizarre movie that its not better than this movie, but its more interesting for sure.
There was a couple of times I was tripping hard on heavy edibles and watched this movie. I could see every bit of pretense and how it was kind of trying hard to be "hannibal lectarish". Same with the other sequel too, that one even more. It all seemed so blatantly corny to me. I went back and did it again to hate watch it! This one seemed like a huge attempt to recatch EVEN MORE lightning in a bottle. The sequels movies were cheesy.
So I've read all the books, seen all the films (including Man Hunter and the Hannibal tv series) and IMO - Red Dragon is the best book, while Silence of the Lambs is the best film. That is purely just my opinion though, I enjoyed the series until it got to The Red Dragon plot...then it kinda went downhill for me 🫤
A person from Paramount tried to copyright strike me once. I ate his liver with some Fava beans and a nice Chianti 👊🏻

I am a BIG fan of the first movie,MANHUNTER.
I read red dragon years before manhunt loved it and I realy prefer the film manhunt and also the series for their depiction of will graham and the relationship with his fbi boss z
Watchable movies with solid acting & writing however I prefer "Manhunter" which has more substance over at times the more stylish "Red Dragon".
Really appreciate you guys! Cheers for the reviews! Keep up the great work!
Cheers @skaro85, really appreciate that.

Thanks again gents. Best channel on the tube, OTSR forever ♥️✊
Ralph Fiennes brings it in this flick! Hopkins is great as always.
Hannibal the tv show was AMAZING! I Wish they'd never cancelled it
Same, I was hoping they'd get to do the Silence of the Lambs story.
OMG yes it was brilliant . I’m begging Netflix for a fourth season.

What a channel! Love you guys! Great review as per usual
I really like this movie, but even i understand it's got nothing on Manhunter, Silence, and Hannibal.
I agree with Gary, Hannibal is an amazing tv show

Perhaps they knew the performance was weak and so they emphasized Lecter. Plus you have the incredible Anthony Hopkins.
What part of a flutist would Hannibal eat?
His windpipe obviously! 😅

The name "Mads Mikkelsen" is Danish and is pronounced "Mass Miekelsen".
They don't even pronounce known western world names correctly. I'm starting to think it's on purpose at this point and/or they don't care 🤣
