    In 1976 I decided to hitchhike the country and starting out in Philadelphia, I wound up in Sioux City, Iowa. I landed a job for Burlington Northern Railroad. I became a Sectionman, mostly replacing rotted ties and also worked the tamping crew, filling in the gaps with crushed stone. I got on the Saturday overtime crew and did a large section of the Sioux City Train Yard. I was in the best shape of my life and look back on those days fondly. Made some good friends before it was time to travel on. Stay well everyone.

    • @wjf213
      @wjf213 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Building a tunnel would be pretty fun. I build Monolithic domes and building a 100 foot tunnel would be pretty quick and easy to do.
      How many feet of track will a yard of ballast cover?
      I read in another post below that people use hot rolled flat stock for rail. When you use that, do you need to crown the flat stock like the real rail is for around turns, or isn't that an issue like on a real train since the weight isn't nearly as much?
      It just seems like you'd still get a lot of wear on wheels and the flat stock around the turns without a crown of some kind on the flat stock.
      I've been looking into building my own railroad and I have a few questions. Keep up the great work.

    • @NorthviewRailroader
      @NorthviewRailroader  6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@mikeotterson6301 I realize that I said I "...have to load ballast with a shovel and wheel barrow...", but that is by choice. Using hand tools gives me much needed exercise - it's the same reason I use a push-mower instead of buying a riding mower. In both cases, the end result is the same; it just takes a little longer. In fact, the entire right-of-way of the N&F RR was graded by hand. Now, if I did this for a living for 40 hours a week, I would definitely have the machinery. But for a hobby, it means that a (relatively) expensive tractor would site idle 99% of the time. I have enough tools that sit idle as it is, such as my lathe. But, the lathe is necessary to make train parts - I can't machine an axle with a hand drill and a file - whereas a shovel and wheel barrow will move the same ballast as a front-end loader (albeit slower). So, I choose to use the hand tools, enjoy the exercise, and spend the money on other stuff... like a Mustang GT... :-D

    Step 10: repeat for 12 years until complete. Aluminum rail? Wheelbarrow?

    • @NorthviewRailroader
      @NorthviewRailroader  7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      The aluminum rail is 1.5" tall rail that is close in size to 8 lb. steel rail. I bought it from a company called Real Trains. The rail is very nice to work with, and it is perfect for the 12" gauge trains. As far as the wheelbarrow is concerned, our railroad is located down in the woods, some distance from the driveway. The ballast was delivered by dump truck next to the driveway, so the only way to get it to the train is by hauling it with the wheelbarrow. It's good exercise, and it goes faster than you might think.

    what is your rails made of? how you acquire them?

    • @NorthviewRailroader
      @NorthviewRailroader  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      My rail is extruded aluminum, although some 12" gauge railroads use steel rail. Most of my railroad is the old Real Trains 1.5" tall aluminum rail, but they went out of business some years ago. I think Roll Models (RMI) acquired the Real Trains rail, but I don't see the 1.5" tall listed on their site - you might give them a call if you are seriously looking for rail. Steel rail is a bit harder to find; most people look for used rail in 8 lb, 12 lb, or 16 lb sizes. One website you might check out for used rail is on the Discover Live Steam "For Sale" pages.

      There are live steam clubs around the country, it is a good way to get started in the hobby with very little investment. And, depending on your talents, a locomotive can be built from scrounged materials relatively cheaply. Don't let a lack of funds discourage you if you are really interested.

    • @NorthviewRailroader
      @NorthviewRailroader  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The ties are 12" on center, so the 12 ties would be 12' of track. It varies; if I load the hopper to capacity (700 lbs) and the subroadbed is perfectly flat, then I can get 15' or so.

Anyway, to cover all the basis, the locomotive has 5-1/2" wheels on a 12" wheelbase, my pickup is a 1/2 ton Chevy, and the track is 12" gauge, 1-1/2" tall aluminum rail on 4x4x24 ties on 12" centers. The hopper car is just a crude work car built out of old wheels, square tubing for the frame, and plywood for the body... nothing fancy, just something for maintenance use.

    Where do you buy tracks?

    • @NorthviewRailroader
      @NorthviewRailroader  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For a railroad like this, track usually isn't sold in a complete form. Rail is purchased, and then the builder can choose what they want to use for ties. Sometimes rail can be purchased used - discoverlivesteam.com is a good place to look for it. Other companies sell it new. The 1.5" tall aluminum rail that is used on the N&F RR is currently sold by Roll Models. The ties on the N&F are currently 4x4 treated w/ ACQ, although various types have been used. The rail is "spiked" to the ties with ceramic coated 1-5/8" long deck screws and 3/4" od washers under the screw heads.

      It's just a short hobby railroad, and the trip back and forth takes minimal time. There isn't much to be gained by using multiple hopper cars. Plus, I get to load a single car, then get a few minutes rest while I enjoy a nice train ride down to the work site. After I drop the ballast, I get to enjoy another train ride back to the loading dock. Multiple hopper cars would reduce the amount of time I get to ride on the train...

      NorthviewRailroader how long is the hopper 4ft long?

    • @NorthviewRailroader
      @NorthviewRailroader  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's around 5' long, and not quite 2' wide. The hopper car is built out of the first car we ever made for the railroad. It was originally an 8' long gondola that was built out of what we had on hand. When the original body rotted out, I shortened up the frame and built a crude hopper car body out of treated plywood. It is just a crude work car made to do a job... nothing fancy.

    Why not mount a push bar, that you can lower down to the track when needed to push the gravel and raise when not needed. Add a couple of more cars, then you would a better run.

      Take a look at DiscoverLiveSteam.com, or subscribe to Live Steam & OUtdoor Railroading magazine. Equipment can be purchased new, used or built from scratch. You also might take a look at the Backyard Railroading group on Facebook. There are clubs and tracks located around the country, so you might see if you can find one close by to visit.

      @NorthviewRailroader  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I assume you mean why would I build a railroad? I enjoyed model trains as a kid, so this is the ultimate train set. If you mean why ballast track, it's because the rock supports the ties to keep the track level, keeps the ties from moving to keep the track aligned, and lets water drain away to keep the ties from rotting and minimize frost heave.

    You need more hopper cars...

    • @NorthviewRailroader
      @NorthviewRailroader  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Lol there's no lead mine or out of service. This is just pretend play. I'd love to have a 1 foot or so gauge private rail of my own though similar to this for moving wood and rocks/dirt on my property as well as the occasional heavy boxes and cargo. Would be fun and save a lot of time and energy. With better quality cars made of metal though.

    • @NorthviewRailroader
      @NorthviewRailroader  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The heavy flatcar is capable of hauling 1000 lbs without problem - I've done it on a number of occasions. Everything on the railroad is hauled in by rail since there isn't any other access to most of the railroad.
