I was 11 years old and still remember this game like it was yesterday. The anticipation leading up with the bye week as a 5th grader was like waiting for Christmas on December 1st. I was just old enough to reasonably remember the Miami and WVU games in 1988/89 but in truth the FSU game in 1993 is still to this day the biggest ND game of my lifetime that has full context. The BC loss the following week still breaks my heart to this day. 27 years later and I'm not sure if the program has really overcome that missed opportunity. I got home just in time to see the final 5 minutes of the loss after attending college football's most played rivalry that day, Lehigh vs Lafayette. At least Lehigh won....
absolutely. there was far more parity. It wasn't like now where Michigan would beat Rutgers 55-3 and then lose to Ohio State 47-14. There's too much of a gap between the top 5, the rest of the top 25 and certainly everyone else.
@@Knightmessenger You had the Florida States of 93-94 and 1999, the Nebraskas of 94-95 and 1997, and Colorado 90, Miami and Washington 91, Alabama 92, Florida 96, Michigan 97, and Tennessee 98.

Now we do have the four team playoff and it's made College football exciting again, but the bias against teams like UCF, who clearly deserved to be in the playoff, is what irritates me. They have all the focus on the so-called "power five" Conferences and leave out the more deserving teams like, say, an undefeated Coastal Carolina team being left out because they're from the "group of five". This is why the playoff needs to expand to at least six teams (five conference champions and one undefeated team from any of the other Conferences).

A Valiant effort by Florida State on a comeback that fell short. This is why I love Football. Hats off to both teams. Now I know why this game is talked about even today still. A all time classic.
I was a freshman in high school. I remember while most of the neighborhood kids was outside playing, I was sitting in my room glued to the television. Notre Dame was my Saturday and my favorite college team. It was my dream school. Ricky Waters was a close family friend and hung out with my brothers when he came home. I was ecstatic over this win. I couldn't contain myself. The following week I was the total opposite. Missed interceptions was our downfall. I can still remember that ball going through the uprights at Boston College, and ending with Fla St. Hoisting the National Championship.
I'm watching the last game of an 8 disc box set of the greatest Notre Dame games and it's this game. We have Charlie Ward, Warrick Dunn, Lou Holtz against Bobby Bowden with OJ Simpson as the sideline commentator and the ex Notre Dame coach's Leahy's grandson playing. A #1 against a #2.
It was probably composed by John Colby. He composed the NFL on NBC theme music for the 1992, 93 and 94 seasons. (Yes they were all different) He has a website too so shouldnt be hard for ND to contact if they need special clearance for including the theme music in these uploads.
I was 15 or 16 watching this just made varsity on h.s team.... 1:25:20 is what sports are all about. Even tho you want to beat the other team you don't want to see nobody seriously hurt. Respect to the Notre Dame trainers for looking out for W. Floyd.... Go Irish
Agreed. As a football player, you want your opponents to get hurt, but only hurt in a way that they feel it the next day and remember you. You don't want to hurt someone to the point of serious injury. You want them to remember you, but you want them to live to play another day. As you said, no serious injury.
You gotta hand it to The Irish they always play one of the Toughest Schedules Even to this day its why when they have a Undefeated season it's really Special!!!!
Man I can still remember watching this game in the mall as my mom and sister went from store to store. I went into Montgomery Ward Electric Avenue and watched it across like 20 screens. I remember all of the men celebrating that we had won. It was great!
Joe Sanchez me too. Turned 44 in February. Time flies but memories of that day never fade. Sat with my dad on the couch to watch the game after we’d had a fight earlier that week and didn’t talk for days. That game brought us back together.
@@rkid727 I as well (I also turned 44 last February). Watched the game with my older bro. We were going insane after Shawn Wooden knocked down FSU's final pass attempt.
ND, you should just upload classic games rather than "stream" them with a countdown and keep them up permanently. It's history. EDIT: I didn't realize that if you missed the live stream, you could still watch it as a regular youtube upload later. That's good but I still don't like that the description says available for a limited time. Why not keep them up forever and post others too?
I have watched this game so many times. That whole week at Jack Yates the talk after practice was,. This is going to be a great game. I still have it on V.H.S. Take care everyone.
I'm a graduate of both schools (FSU '05 ND '10). I grew up a Canes fan and didn't know who to root for or against in this game, but the hype around this game was unlike anything ever seen until USC-Texas in the Rose Bowl. That the setting was in South Bend kicked it up (just as it did for that Rose Bowl), that feel for the rest of the country regardless of the game being great. But the magnitude of hype was unreal. If I was FSU, I would have fired the equipment manager - I've never seen so many players slip in the open field.
31-17. FSU 4th late. ND has a easy INT. Drops it and then gives up a TD. That play cost ND a national title. Would have been a decisive win. FSU saved themselves. Drop 1 spot and was gifted a title. ND dominated this game.
ahh come on now- it was a great game. #1 vs #2. and they could have easily avoided each other. featuring two of the 3 best teams in the nation- head to head. as for the noles- having to go in and defeat a tommie frazier- led nebraska squad was hardly a "gift..." as the rest of the nation would be finding out- one year later- and then a year after that...
Thankfully smarter heads prevailed( such as general Lee) and voted the loser of this game the winners. I think Bowden voted ND 143rd in the coaches poll after this meaningless scrimmage. I applaud the National Champion Nebraska team after their loss to Florida St. it really makes sense
FSU actually out gained Notre Dame in total yardage but made some uncharacteristic mistakes especially in the 2nd quarter. Bobby Bowden had too aggressive of a game plan that day. I wanted the rematch in the Orange Bowl. I will give Notre Dame credit for playing an outstanding game, but if that game is played in Tallahassee or a neutral site it's a different story. I compare it to when FSU upset UF in Tallahassee (1996) and got destroyed in the rematch. The home field advantage was huge that day. It usually is in college football.
I agree that this is one of the greatest games in college football history and I remember when this game was being played down in the area I grew up in Thomasville, Georgia (just north of Tallahassee); that's all the news crews could talk about for two weeks. Bobby Bowden was THE COACH! who went up against Lou Holtz another great coach. I have much respect for the Bowden Family; they're humble and gracious to others and Coach Bowden lives his faith and tried to instill values into his players. We can't forget Heisman Trophy winner Charlie Ward, Jr. was THE QB! who had a great performance in this game showing why he deserved the 1993 Heisman Trophy. I didn't know him but I knew his dad, Charlie, Sr. (who was my history teacher in High School), and also I graduated High School with Charlie, Jr.'s younger brother & sister. The Wards are another humble and gracious family.
Irish fan here. I remember watching this game from my Air Force unit in Iceland and being so grateful for the horrendous FSU play calling in the fourth quarter. I guess that part about "playing from behind" just wasn't a concept they had any experience with.
Exactly a week later against Boston College, everybody thought the national championship was a given! When they hit that field goal to end the perfect season, the hallway in our dorm was equal amounts cheers and groans!
I was at a chess tournament in 5th grade. In between matches we were all crowded around a 10" b&w portable TV with bad antenna reception. No one was missing this game. It was glorious.
I was a senior in high school, living in the western burbs of Chicago. At the time, I was a ND fan, but this game switched my allegiance. Charlie Ward and his fellow Noles amazed me. Needless to say, I was happy to see them win the title that year. I later attended and graduated Florida State University and have been a diehard fan since. College football is a wonderful sport. Go Noles!
I am a Seminoles fan but it was a great game, we had two turnovers & we still had a chance to tie & or win.... It ended well for FSU that year, Notre Dame loss to Boston college & then FSU went to win national champion
If Jeff Burris could hold on to the ball, this would have been a blowout. He had 4 balls hit him right in the hands and dropped all 4. Still a great game, but damn.
It’s easy to see in hindsight, but at the moment Charlie Ward throws the ball, he has three guys open: Friar at the five, McCorvey beat his man inside between the hash marks, and Vanover was on his own island in the opposite corner of the end zone at the top of the screen.
when you watch the #1 and #2 teams play in college football you would expect to see many of them in the NFL after their college days. i only remeber maybe 4-5 that i saw on sundays playing. just goes to show you how hard it is to move to the pro level
man how bless are we to have football the way it is today when i watch these games i have respect for these guy but compare to now day my god the difference u could line up anybody’s 2 team now days and probably win by 21 😮
Even though we blew it to BC the next week, it’s still one of the biggest wins in this school’s proud history. I wish I was alive to watch it, but I’ve heard many people with great stories about this classic. As someone who goes to a D3 school, if we were #2 and played #1 (which is likely considering our rival), I don’t think it’d get half the hype of this game
Have to remember how big this game was, it was the first game the ESPN game day show traveled for a game. And for us ND fans it went for it losing to BC the following week
I Remember this game like it was today, I was on the JV football team, we played that Saturday morning, which Won! Normally we would go watch the Varsity game Saturday afternoon, but instead l went home with my girlfriend at the time ordered pizza and wings and watched this great Game.... GO IRISH!
What a Classic Football game. N.D. up by 17, F.S.U., somehow, came back, and could have tied it easily, but fact is, N.D. played a better, more physical game. As a diehard Irish, and I also love FSU ( 2 family grads), loved Bowden and team too, but N.D. was and always will be, my team till I leave this place to my Irish Clan in Heaven.
I remember I was a teenager when we watched this at my parents house. My dad had some people over. We were all FSU fans. After Notre Dame didn't score on their first drive and FSU did, we all felt like FSU was going to beat the crap out of Notre Dame the way FSU beat all other teams so far. We felt confident we were going to blow them out. Then Notre Dame scores and I clearly remember a fellow FSU fan saying "Good. I don't want to blow them out. I want this to be a good game." Then Notre Dame scores again... and again..... and we were down by a couple touchdowns. At halftime, we all were in shock. We couldn't believe this was even possible. How could FSU be LOSING?! In the second half, we were had hope FSU could come back. I remember my dad saying "It takes a true champion to come from behind like this and win." Right down to the last play, we believed it was possible. At the end, we were all upset. The great titans have been brought down. This undefeatable powerhouse of a team finally lost. Then Notre Dame lost to Boston College and FSU went on to win the national championship. Would have liked a rematch with Notre Dame for the title, because I think, if they played again, FSU could have beaten them. If you take out the second quarter of this game and put together quarters 1, 3, and 4, FSU wins this easily. FSU panicked too early and lost their confidence. In a neutral site, in a rematch, I truly believe FSU could have beaten them. My $0.02
Charlie ward was way ahead of his time. Imagine him in the NFL back then. He’s the first cam newton, jalen hurts, Desuan Watson, Michael Vick, he could have been a great QB

Sensational. What a showdown between two storied powerful programs, two legendary coaches. This is as good as it gets.
I am watching this from Barcelona, Spain. I remember watching this game live on TV. Go Irish!
Cemented my status as a Noles fan at 15 years old. That Notre Dame team was great and they proved it that day.
That damn option running game is hard to stop.
Dude Lou Holtz and Bobby Bowden two of the greatest mentors EVER!!!
Arguably one of the greatest college football games ever.
Please please bring back that old intro theme NBC
I was so angry when they went to their newer theme in 2007. "If it's not broke, don't fix it."
It was probably composed by John Colby. He composed the NFL on NBC theme music for the 1992, 93 and 94 seasons. (Yes they were all different)
He has a website too so shouldnt be hard for ND to contact if they need special clearance for including the theme music in these uploads.

GREATEST INTRO to any college game I ever saw. It really hit deep as to what so many in Indiana were feeling.
An incredible football game! Thank you!
Best intro ever to one of the best games ever.
Best football game I ever watched, I remember it like it was yesterday at 13, I’m 42 now dammmm good football back then
Thanks for including all of the parts with OJ and not being PC. NBCsN edits them out for the rerun of this game.
just think, the O J cut 2 human beings heads off shortly after this
but he has a nice smile
Brian Nilles I still think he was framed.
You gotta hand it to The Irish they always play one of the Toughest Schedules Even to this day its why when they have a Undefeated season it's really Special!!!!
Game starts at 20:21
Amazing to know that this was ESPN’s first GameDay show…what a way to start this “now” weekly tradition.
this is 1 of maybe 4x where my birthday was on the day notre dame played and this win was 1 of my greatest birthday gifts i ever gotten
Man I can still remember watching this game in the mall as my mom and sister went from store to store. I went into Montgomery Ward Electric Avenue and watched it across like 20 screens. I remember all of the men celebrating that we had won. It was great!
I was 17 years old when the game was on. This was a storied game that will last for quite some time.
CGH February for me too!
I was 13 and grew up in Massachusetts. The rest of the family are BC fans. The next week was not as fun for me.
I cried the next week! Best game I’ve seen followed by the heartbreak against BC
1 year later game is still up
I will be attending ND this year, and this happened 8+ years before I was born!
Also, the missed pick by Pete Bercich against BC.
ahh come on now- it was a great game. #1 vs #2. and they could have easily avoided each other. featuring two of the 3 best teams in the nation- head to head. as for the noles- having to go in and defeat a tommie frazier- led nebraska squad was hardly a "gift..." as the rest of the nation would be finding out- one year later- and then a year after that...
I wouldn't say that the Irish Dominated. In the first half sure but not the second half.
Bobby Bowden sounds like the stereotypical college football coach lol
puts on FSU Starter Jacket with the Old Logo
I'm a noles fan as well to 1993 noles Irish game was classic one of the greatest college football game of all time
I was a 19 year old college student at a cross country race this day. Wow, it's almost 30 years to the day.
This is one of the greatest sporting events of my lifetime.
Back when OJ was known for football
@@brandonjohnson7376 6 months later though!
1:08:18 I've watched football for a long time and this is the best blocked college football play I've ever seen. EVER.
I was at a chess tournament in 5th grade. In between matches we were all crowded around a 10" b&w portable TV with bad antenna reception. No one was missing this game. It was glorious.
The hype was off the charts for this one.
This was one so-called "Game of the Century" that actually lived up to the billing...and then some.
The wrong team won, the game was meaningless. In the coaches poll Lou Holtz voted Fla St 2nd, Bobby Bowden voted ND 132 nd. To bring the average down
@@briannilles1303 the only games of my lifetime that were on this level for regular season was ohio st michigan 2006 and the 2010 and 2013 iron bowls
#IRISH4LIFE just a phenomenal Saturday Afternoon that was watching this game with my pops and the boys in Blue and Gold came out on top .
2:31 NBC broadcast opening.
I am a noles fan and this is one of the greatest games in college football history. Despite us losing nothing but respect to notre dame.
I was there for this game. It was the loudest crowd I ever heard in South Bend. GO IRISH!!!
still remember this game like it was yesterday1!!
OJ was a slashing runner! He could knife through the line, just like everything else!
It ended well for FSU that year, Notre Dame loss to Boston college & then FSU went to win national champion
this game was meaningless
oh i forgot, FSU lost to Notre Dame, meaningless
My Auburn tigers won every game that season also
@@briannilles1303 in the big picture ur right
If Jeff Burris could hold on to the ball, this would have been a blowout. He had 4 balls hit him right in the hands and dropped all 4. Still a great game, but damn.
A great day for the Fighting Irish. The Ghost of Rockne strikes again.
It’s easy to see in hindsight, but at the moment Charlie Ward throws the ball, he has three guys open: Friar at the five, McCorvey beat his man inside between the hash marks, and Vanover was on his own island in the opposite corner of the end zone at the top of the screen.
Lee becton my favorite all time college running back
when you watch the #1 and #2 teams play in college football you would expect to see many of them in the NFL after their college days. i only remeber maybe 4-5 that i saw on sundays playing. just goes to show you how hard it is to move to the pro level
There are the best hits in notredames scareist hats irish slamm bring the word lord i'm ready!
man how bless are we to have football the way it is today when i watch these games i have respect for these guy but compare to now day my god the difference u could line up anybody’s 2 team now days and probably win by 21 😮
Even though we blew it to BC the next week, it’s still one of the biggest wins in this school’s proud history.
I remember this game well. I am a true irish fan. I was about 16 or 17 at the time. I went nuts. Then a week later I was mad
hey wounder if there going to do a double back pass with a speed option lol
I Remember this game like it was today, I was on the JV football team, we played that Saturday morning, which Won! Normally we would go watch the Varsity game Saturday afternoon, but instead l went home with my girlfriend at the time ordered pizza and wings and watched this great Game.... GO IRISH!
3:07:44 Wide receiver #12 Matt Frier WIDE OPEN on the 3 yard line...
As high as I was after this win, I was equally low the following weekend. ND’s last great team. What a game. What a time.
I’m crying
Did Kevin Knoxes son play basketball for Kentucky?
I want this to be a good game."
Then Notre Dame scores again... and again..... and we were down by a couple touchdowns.
My $0.02
awesome game
What year was this 1993

Who is that guy at 1:28:55 walking by Bowden on the left wearing the gold necklace?
I thought it was Deion😆😆😆😆
23:11 Holy sh*t PBP guy, the masters announcer THE JIM NANCE ON THE STOP??
OJ here.... 7 months before the Bronco Chase in LA
Charlie ward was way ahead of his time. Imagine him in the NFL back then. He’s the first cam newton, jalen hurts, Desuan Watson, Michael Vick, he could have been a great QB
Not at 6’2”. He would’ve been far too small. He wasn’t anything like any of them.
Easily one of the best college football games ever
Don’t you think the announcers are pro-FSU? They are telling us ND fans how it is so incredible that we could actually be ahead 21-7
What’s up OJ SImpson?
Great game
This really was the "Game of the Century" in the 90s.
how good would charlie ward been in the nfl
If the CFP was around back then, Notre Dame and Florida State would have easily got in.
