    I know the feeling you have. I have been living with it for some time. I started riding in 1973. In 1984 I came upon a section of road that was wet for no reason in the middle of a sharp fast bend. Though only "slightly injured" in the crash my hip still hurts to this day when the weather is cold or I have been in the saddle too long.
    A good friend hit a car in a parking lot. He almost bled to death. Lost one kidney. I held the hand of a rider I did not know as he died in the street. I watched a rider die at a low speed intersection. My own mother turned across the path of a fast rider causing him permanent brain damage. The risk we face of injury and death are very real when we ride.
    But we do it anyway. Why?
    Some people say it is better to live life rather than simply surviving. There is something right about that. There is no feeling like tucking into the perfect turn and powering out of the apex on the perfect line. You know that. I know that. We all live for that feeling of mastery, that feeling of oneness with the bike and the road. Most people will never know that feeling. In part that feeling is special because not everyone can experience it. Most people overestimate the risk and never try.
    Then again, many riders underestimate the risk and the long lasting effects of a bad crash. Riding near the limit on a public road brings a heightened risk. Around the next bend there may be gravel in the road, a car crash blocking the road, children on bicycles... Riding with little margin for safety must be undertaken with a serious understanding of the potential consequences.
    Perhaps you underestimated the consequences of a crash. I don't know the details, but there can always be unexpected hazards in the road, decreasing radius turns, or a wasp entering a jacket that can change the course of a rider's life and, unfortunately, the lives of others. This is a serious matter, not to be taken lightly. Fear is the appropriate response to danger. If you feel it now it is because you now realize the risk.
    You would call me old. Today I rode a couple wheelies and went over 100mph on a city street. I did this where I knew I would be safe, could see around the turns, had no traffic. Next month I will spend a full day on a race track sliding the rear and testing my limits trail braking into turns. There are no cross streets on the track, no cars, no dog will wander out in front of me. Any risk I take I take for myself alone and the other riders who have the same understanding. Nevertheless an ambulance is waiting at the track should I be injured. Riding at track days on a race track makes me a better rider on the street. It teaches both speed and safety.
    I ride mountain roads, traveling a long distance here in the US to find the best ones. Often I ride very quickly, often at higher speeds than I reach at a race track, but never around traffic. On public roads I am always able to stop in the distance that I can see. When I overtake cars I do it at a mild pace so i do not startle the driver. I try to be a good ambassador for motorcyclists.
    45 years of riding have taught me the dangers and joys of life on 2 wheels. Maybe you too now know more of the risk we take at speed, the cost if we fail. I have great fun riding. you can too. Relax. Get back into the flow of riding. There is a great magazine article from "Motorcyclist" ten years ago titled "The Pace." Find it. Read it. It talks about a better way to ride challenging public roads, a way that is less stressful, more enjoyable, and still quite challenging.
    I enjoy your videos but have often worried about the risks you take. A touch of moderation is all it takes to vastly improve your likelihood of a long and happy riding career.
    Best wishes.

    • @Schaaf

      Thanks a lot for taking the time to write this comment Bill. The biggest problem I'm having these days is that although I take less risks than I used to I still take too many in my opinion. But I simply need a certain speed to be able to enter the zone. And then my mind kicks in and tells me something like "Hey, you might be taking 10 percent less risks now but you're having 50 percent less fun this way. Why don't you just go back to your old style then?"
      I think I might be close to a point where I'm starting to debate with myself if the whole risk of riding is really worth it. But then again I can't imagine not riding any more.
      I'm sure track riding would help a lot indeed. With learning and calming down on the roads. But I simply can't afford to do so in my current state. And this shows me that there still are other things with bigger priorities in my life because I'm not willing to change my lifestyle completely to be able to afford to do trackdays but then also nothing else next to that. But what I can do is read that article you recommended ;)
      Thanks again

    Schaff, you might say you ride slower but your ride still didn’t lose its spirited side. Yes, one can do it faster, maybe, but do we really need to go always to the max to enjoy riding? Maybe we can enjoy such a ride doing track days, unfortunately we have traffic and other stuff to worry about, out there in the public roads. It is always better to leave “room to the safe side”, not going faster gives time to act on unexpected situations. That will help us to live another day, to ride another day. Stay safe man, it is always good to see your raws. Godspeed, always!

    Ride safe! This is a lot faster then I ride... Well because I have not the skill and yes fear kicks in. But riding in the zone just before fear is already satisfying. We have to deal with our egos. I understand that because just after the winter break I feel now aware that 4 months ago this zone was somewhere elsewhere. Currently I started to focus more on riding much more smooth, which is not same as cruising but less aggressive then my riding before. And this gives me an other kind of flow which I enjoy.

    Have you given some thought to track riding? It would be a way where you can ride all out, without the risks of traffic, trees, gravel ,etc. Ironically even Max Wrist has had to tone it down a bit, he moved back to the US (he was a US military member stationed in Italy) and has had to tone his riding down a bit on the roads in California as the police there almost certainly know who he is.

  • @blipco5

    I can appreciate your sentiment. But the "flow" doesn't have to happen at insane speeds. For me it happens when I'm doing everything right, just the right temperature, no traffic, perfect lines, minimal but proper braking, clipping the apex with a nice drive out of the turn. It doesn't happen all the time but when it does....

    Love the fact you open your heart at the end, and by doing so, you really are helping other riders to understand what might be going on, in their own mind. Riding a bike with 10% or 20% less pace, is still good fun, and apart from the life priorities, we also should accept our age / not healing easily. Really wish you find things that will excite you as much as going 10/10. As you surely know, even at half speed that you mentioned, you are still a very fast rider and twice as safe! To be honest I appreciated you for this ride and these comments more as a person, than with the one with the R1200R, which made me appreciate you as a rider!

    Ich vermute, das würde Dir auch gut tun. Bei deinen exzellenten Connections sollte es kein Problem sein, dass Du auf den 1000PS Trackdays und ähnlichen Veranstaltungen auch Rennmotorräder bewegst, oder?
    Ich habe neben dem Straßenmotorrad noch eine Montesa Cota 4RT260. Das ist ein Trial-Motorrad. Auf Grund der sehr geringen Geschwindigkeiten ist hier die Verletzungsgefahr gering - und dennoch ist es herausfordern, spannend und macht viel Spaß. Nebenbei ist Trial-Fahren auch ein preisgünstiges Hobby.
    Mit den Fußrasten am Asphalt kratzen ist nicht die einzige Möglichkeit, Motorradfahren intensiv zu genießen.

    • @Schaaf
      @Schaaf  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ja, Trialbike ist sicherlich auch geniales Training.
      Trackdays sind für mich so leider keine drinn, das kann ich mir nicht leisten. Ein Rennstrecken-Bike ist zwar günstig, aber ein Tag Rennstrecke kostet immer noch verdammt viel Geld. Nur wegen Ringfahren möchte ich mich nicht nur mehr von Brot und Wasser ernähren müssen. Ich denke, ich werde eher in die Touren/Abenteuer-Richtung gehen.

      @Ingenieur1961 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I ride the same bike as Schaaf in this video, a KTM 1290 Super Adventure S with Quickshifter Plus. I shift up and down at any speed and any revs without using the clutch and it is always perfectly smooth. The clutch is neccesarry only for start or stop. The clutch smoothens when changig gears at very low speed with the engine running idle.
      So it is normal when Schaaf is downshifting without clutch before goin in (sharp) turns and the bike does it in a smooth way.

    wow. thanks for sharing, your insight is HIGHLY appreciated. thank you.
    this was like what i needed now. :-O
    i guess we´re all on a journey and looking for the middle path between enjoying short moments when we are better than others (going faster than other for example) and on the other hand being with our non egoic state in which we just enjoy we are alive and thus dont need any approval, appreciation or what ever from others. this FOR ME at least, is very challenging sometimes, especially as man, since we tend to measure EVERYTHING :-) and tend to make life a contest game only.
    but in the end the state of being ok (or how other more esotherical people call it : to love oneselft unconditionally) with everything that is , feels to me like a cool life mission without end.
    wish you best and try to enjoy this new (or maybe old) "passenger" of yours...you know...i think fear is not only bad...imagine what would happen if we had none ?! ,-) ,-P
    ride safe and greetingz,
    Marius
