I have been coming here for seven years and retired in Dumaguete now for the last two months. I am leaving later this week for Thailand and here are my reasons. Dirty water even the Blvd smells like a sewer. Then there’s all the open pit sewage that’s the norm. High prices, brown outs, water outs, internet outs, roosters everywhere starting up at 3:30 am. Dogs barking everywhere covered in mange. Bad food, scamming women, traffic is insane. It’s too dangerous to drive and too dangerous to walk along the roads. No sidewalks if there are it’s parking for moterbikes and street vendors. Not as many people speak English as advertised. Smoke from burning leaves and trash every morning and evening. Crazy laws that can land you I jail for just arguing with someone or a disgruntled girlfriend. Loud motercycles , loud music, Karaoke at volume 10 late into the night. No nightlife at all. I think I missed a few too.

If you have a generous monthly budget (plus income from a sizeable nest egg) at your disposal, why even consider Duma as your retirement destination? There are definitely better options in the Phils which you can use as your international travel hub to travel to other SE countries for about 50% of the year.
Thailand: Offers indeed many advantages, but retirees who want to stay there more than 180 days/year will have to put up with their foreign pension funds introduced Thailand to be taxed…

Having lived in the Philippines for a short while, and also have a Filipina wife. I agree with a lot of what you say. The Philippines is a complete mess. Successive governments have smashed the hopes and dreams of the majority of the population, and the damage has been done. Thailand is 100% better in every way, and we are moving there from Australia very soon. Hua Hin is a great place to retire if you haven't been. Good luck 🙏

The Philippines have did an excellent job at pricing Itself out of the retirement market. This from someone who have both lived in and visited the country many times. What I pay for there is no longer equal to what I get in return. And so I will be retiring in either Thailand or Malaysia.

What other reason, really, is there to come to the Philippines, as opposed to living in a better organized country? If the women here start to overvalue themselves (even the so-called 'low hanging fruit'), men will depart for greener pastures. What happens to these women then? Now, there so many desperate men throwing themselves at these ladies and sending them money, but that can change.

Why would anyone go somewhere and experience a life worse off than where he came from? Just to name a few reasons; the infrastructure, weather, brown outs, you can’t drink the water. The list is a long one. Once a man spends a few months and realizes women are women no matter where he lives, then all of a sudden he realizes this isn’t what I was expecting. If he stays he realizes all the things that frustrate him are only going to get worse. Depending on the source, for at least half the people that try to live outside their home country, they leave within two years.

Just considering your comparison to California :
Infrastructure- CA roadways/bridges are literally crumbling. Pouring all its money into a high speed rail that will never operate.
Weather: California can’t stop its forest from burning due to arson causing heat waves. Brown outs: California utilities shut the power off anytime the wind blows a little. Water: California water systems are recycling water mixed with feminine products causing high amount of estrogen in the tap water.
I think this is why people from California find happiness in Phils easier than other states.

The thing i hate is that i dont feel im better then anyone, but no one is better then me either. However, in the Philippines white expats are discriminated against daily, we are over charged by 50-100% on most items. My filipina wife hired an electrician and he quoted her 3,000 peso to put in a few outlets. He saw me the price jumped to 6,000 peso. DISCRIMINATION. Another time we had our sewer drained out. They quoted my wife 9,000 peso they saw me and tore open the top of the septic tank and asked me if she was my wife, i said yes and he said im going to have to charge you 18,000 peso for this job. DISCRIMINATION. I ride in a trike and i get charged 50 peso and my wife gets charged 30 pesos. DISCRIMINATION. I wish that the United States would have the same rules for every foreigner that comes into the US, as that country has for the US citizens. Example: no filipino can own land, if they open a business it has to be with an american who has to own 60% of the business. Etc.

Yup....expectations & cultures change. I have 3 friends who have left from here in Mactan for Thailand/Vietnam because their girlfriends found a better deal. Another friend got rid of his live-in after she made him feel like an ATM. The women here now are just looking for a sugar daddy. At least the bar girls are genuine. Thats a sad comparison but it's true. Every time I talk to a girl here, I feel I'm being evaluated for net worth and pension potential. But my mountain bike is dependable, loyal and I get back out every ounce of love I put into her. And Cebu has some of the best mountain trails in the world. I love the Philippines, but the women are becoming one of the lesser desirable aspects like the bad sewers, drainage, trash, water and electricity.

I have spent some time in Japan and South Korea. I have been to Taiwan twice. I do like all of them just fine. Unfortunately, I never felt the same kinda warmth and excitement as I had in South East Asia. By far my favorite places are Malaysia and the Philippines. Even Thailand can’t compare. Indonesia is close but still not as good. What makes Malaysia and the Philippines better is their friendly people. The life style is very appealing to me. Anyway, I love visiting Thailand, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. But I want to live in Malaysia or the Philippines. It is just my opinion. It comes from my experience of spending time in each country. My best wishes to you both.

If people want to be truly honest, they left their home country hoping to find a young wife, and that really is the truth. Yes, it's cheaper to live their but once they battle the everyday challenges of traffic, hot weather, food, chickens, and the infrastructure it becomes a challenge. It truly is paradise, but paradise can turn into a nightmare if you need urgent medical care. I recently traveled to the Philippines, and the beauty of this country is stunning to say the least and the people are beyond friendly. My advice has always been, find your wife and take her to your home country and treat her like a queen and she will love you forever. My two favorite countries to visit are Japan (23) times and New Zealand (9) times.

Nice video. I grew up in very rural America. I absolutely love the very Rural province areas in the PH. I lived there on and off for 10 years prior to the Plandemic. I am moving there full time soon and No I won't have to listen to dogs barking and roosters crowing. If you control 30+ hectares, all you'll hear are distant sounds. You can create your own infrastructure with solar panels and Starlink and get a cheaper place being off grid with far better electricity than what you find in the PH. The little towns in the provinces are super friendly.
There are colleges in nearly every province. If you find a Filipina in the province who has gone to college and yet still lives with her parents, she most likely is a very traditional woman. I want one of those. And she will speak good English as most college courses are taught in English.

This is a little off topic but I just want to give you an update on the cost of living in my house in a Chicago suburb. I have a small 1100 square foot house. My property tax increased 60 percent this year. Now $5,700 a year. In about 3 more years my property tax will be $10,000 a year. I recently bought a small 4 pound sliced ham at Honeybaked Ham store. Cost $70.00. One year ago the same ham cost $50.00. Houses in my neighborhood are starting to go up for sale because some people can’t pay the increased property tax and homeowners insurance. You’re a lucky guy. You have a beautiful and intelligent wife.

That's why I left Chicago for Wisconsin. We used to come up here as kids to camp and fish anyhow. I live on Lake Michigan and pay less than I did renting in a Wicker Park building that occasionally heard gunshots and routine police chases. There is a reason people are leaving.

That is according to the Sun Times. Have you seen the latest demand from the teacher's union for their next contract? Ridiculous. The CME is talking to Dallas and Miami now about moving out of Chicago. If that happens it will be devastating for the city

Some people are not going to adapt to the new lifestyle. Old people are stuck in their own way. It takes a special kind of person to live in another country especially if they come from the west.

As we know, the philippines isn't for everyone . Some people don't do their research and don't do their recon missions. I say that you should come for a month at least 4 or 5 times before you make your decision to move there. You may be happier somewhere else like Thailand or maybe Costa Rica, and that is just a couple of places on the planet. Many of us are looking for places where our dollar goes farther than at home, which would give us the ability to save money or be able to travel in a new segment of the world. Women are everywhere on the planet, and that should not be your motivation for leaving your country. They say it's like an alcoholic trying to stop drinking. It's up to the individual and not what anyone else says for them to make the first step. Be selfish because you deserve it, as this is your retirement, and it has to be about you because this decision affects you and really no one else. Fall in love with the philippines and the culture, and then you may find the love of your life.

I think happiness is a state of mind, not an address. Each day is an opportunity to enjoy something new.... HOWEVER, modern amenities, infrastructure, reliable power, clean water, clean and safe streets really add to the quality of life and will impact your state of mind. If you are accustomed to having these things and suddenly you don't then your state of mind will not allow you to enjoy things. Once you are happy then you can be more happy with a partner too. Your beautiful wife, Maya, offers some great advise too. Travelling with a light load, lets you be mobile and move around and experience different places. Don't be in a rush to get anchored long term. As an spoiled American, I am not sure I could go long without reliable power and clean water. Sure for a short visit but not as everyday life. Also pollution is a big deal for me, noise, air, water... I really do not like nor do I like those who intentionally pollute. I don't like long lines, crowds, inefficient processes (red tape), lots of stray barking dogs, roosters everywhere, loud motor bikes stinky diesel engines... to name a few. Philippines has a lot of good to offer though, island beauty, beautiful culture, loving kind people and delicious food. I look forward to visiting and exploring but when I retire, I have my eyes on Malaysia or Thailand.

I can remember one time considering moving from the Los Angeles area to Paris, Tennessee and buying a farm. I would drive a truck for income and fish and play in a band in my spare time. Boy, was I happy I stayed in LA. I ended up graduating from USC and managing contracts for NASA, so I could afford to visit Paris, Tennessee any time I wanted. Now the wife says "Why don't we buy a condo or townhome in the Phils." Right, and a week after we move in somebody starts a pig farm upwind from us. She hates renting and can be quite stubborn.

Maybe many leave because after being there, they see that vloggers LIED to them and sold them paradise, when it was anything but. They only told them the good and positive, instead of being HONEST and including the bad and negative. In reality vloggers are doing a DISservice to foreigners by only talking about the good/positives, an intelligent person wants ALL info, good AND bad, positive AND negative, to make an informed decision. Others, it's their own inability to adapt to the new environment around them. Others go expecting everything to be like home when it's nothing like it. Some never planned on long term, they just wanted to experience it before moving on to another country. Each individual needs to weigh the pros and cons for THEM, if the pros outweigh the cons, go for it, it just may be paradise for you. If the cons win out, you'll never find peace and happiness.

Haha vloggers are definitely not helping. You have travelled a lot and know you click with a place or you don’t. Women are really the only reason for being the Philippines. Still surprises me more blokes don’t live with their girl outside of Philippines for 6 to 8 months a year.

This is my second time in PI. My first visit was a recon to see if I wanted to live here. Living here now married to a Filipina. There is no perfect place and there is no easy algorithm. Everyone has different desires. Different expectations. Different non-negotiables. Different things they cannot live without. Different things they are trying to escape. It is very advisable to do a recon first and keep an open mind. No place will be exactly like your home country. Most places won't even be close.
There are things here I don't like, but I remind myself why I left the US and take inventory of that daily. People's priorities for leaving often are what either keeps them here or drives them back home. Mine priorities were escaping the toxic culture in the US and the high cost of living. No matter what happens here in PI, going back to the US won't change that. So far, the desire to get away from that has greatly outweighed the roosters, trash, brown outs and other stuff. I am a low budget person without champagne tastes, so province life is fine for me ... although I do try to establish good living conditions there. Good, not great or luxurious.

Many guys return to their home countries because the new gf or wife don’t won’t to live in the 🇵🇭 anymore. It’s happened with many friends of mine. One is on his 3rd time back trying to live in the 🇵🇭. Me for one I first traveled there in the mid eighties. After 3 years there in the USA Air Force and many many trips back there. I just can’t resign myself to living there. I stay there for a few months each year and return to the USA. I enjoy but it takes a lot to adjust and get use to. Great story content thank you for sharing 👌🏾.

20 years now in California, my wife has grown accustomed to the standard of living here. For now, the Phils for us is just a short holiday destination. So when we go, it’s a splurge as it should be. Our camping days of roughing it are long gone - which is what it can feel like in the Phils province.
At the end of every visit, we always look forward to going home. It’s nice when you have the option to leave.

In my experience of enjoying a lot of time ALL over the Philippines I've observed first hand the unfortunate TECH advance imported from the outside world. If there are 20 Filipnos/Filipinas having dinner together in a restaurant 19 will be engrossed on their mobile phones.......and Filipina girlfriend will have hundreds of guys on their facebook DMs......you have been warned guys.

Thanks Gio and Mrs Gio 😊, l do agree that you should be pretty much content in your life before going to the Philippines because no place will make you feel better But I’ll add a caveat to that , my first time there l was at camiquin island at my ex’s family’s house and between the 80s music playing downstairs and the chickens yelling all day and night, l ( exhaled ) and found peace from that simplicity. L do understand that it was just a visit and not me living there. My intentions is to move to IT park and travel around the Philippines from one place and if l find a different area, I’ll do that and the relationship situation, l will take my time , even if it’s with one lady , make her understand that I’m not wasting her time but I’m taking it slow so we both know that we are making sure that we are choosing the right person. Love the Philippines and not too many people can change my heart. 👍✌🏻✌🏻plus I’ve been to the Philippines in 2007, 2014,2016 .

Ne subscriber here ... for me the culture really has no bearing. That's why I'm moving to a foreign country in the first place ... to experience a new way of living. (I lived in Panama for 6 years so I know all about the culture shock thing.) However, the reasons I would choose why expats are move out (are not coming in the first place are 6-fold: (1) Tavel (crossing Itnt'l Date Line to come back to Canada); (2) Different time zone (difficulty in running businesses in Canada and USA),; (3) Not having the ability to own land, houses, apts (in LATAM you can as a foreigner do all these things); (4)Age gap relationships are just as common in LATAM as they are in SE Asia, so why move so far away when you can just go south; (5) Although there is a language barrier, Spanish is very easy to learn (one of the few phonetic languages; i.e., how you see it is how it's pronounced); and (6) Gaining citizenship in your new homeland is very possible and you don't have to renounce your other citizenship (Filipino citizenship is God-damn near impossible to get but when you do get it, you have to renounce your Canadian/America/Aussie/British citizenship ... NO WAY JOSE! Marrying a citizen for a LATAM country on the other hand you may also find that your wife also has Portuguese or Italian citizenship (by descent) ... but you won't find this in Philippines or Thailand.
This is important because ... say you marry a Brazilian. After living in Brazil for 1 year after marriage, you qualify to apply for Brazilian citizenship. But if your wife also has Portuguese or Italian citizenship (or better yet, both!), after just 3 years of marriage you qualify for citizenship from both those countries; and you don't even have to learn the language, move there or even visit there either! So you not only get Brazilian citizenship but also an EU citizenship (or two) to boot!
    And this is my plan.
