PRINTABLE RECIPE ➜ rackoflam.com/japanese-curry-recipe/
I've been doing this with an instant pot and also a multicooker rice cooker for quite a white. Japanese curry doesn't really take very long but saving some time is helpful. Japanese curry is my favorite "don't know what to make for dinner" dinner. And in winter, it really hits the spot.
Yes!!
There is instant seasoning so when cooking only add onions and carrots, this curry is already delicious and who's served it.
Very practical
Absolutely love this recipe!!! I’ve substituted the water with coconut water and then added a can of full fat coconut milk after pressure cooking and natural release for an extra thick and creamy taste 😊
Thanks so much! Glad u liked it
I just made this curry today and it was wonderful. The cooking point of every single ingredient was perfect. This was the first time I did a Japanese curry and it won’t be the last. Thanks a lot for this recipe!
So glad you enjoyed it! Thank you!
Yes! In all my years of making this, I've only added chicken, carrots, and potatoes. Your version looks more yummy!
😋 I’m sure yours is delicious! Thank you!
I've seen this product in the stores, but I didn't know of anyone who has used this product. Thank you Maggie and your sister. Now that I've seen a review, I'll try it out. :)
This brand is actually huge in Japan as their parent brant is S&B they’re the og curry brand 😋
Hope u liked it!
Is she related to *Inga Lam* ? I’m wondering.
Just made this tonight and it is so much better than making it on the stovetop! The veggies & chicken get so tender. Thanks for the recipe inspiration!
Thanks for trying my recipe!!
If you use coconut milk instead of water it is amazing. I ate Golden or Vermont curry at least once a day for 2 years. One of the best out there. I tried Thai curry after that and loved the coconut tint to it. If you are new to making curry like this, follow these directions exactly and you will find your new favorite dish. Great video.👍👍
Thanks so much!
This recipe is perfect! I’ve made it quite a few times and I’ve started adding half the water(hot) to the curry cubes to help dissolve them. Then add to the meat and veggie and the rest of the water!
Your recipe is amazing! Thanks 😊
Thanks so much! I’m so glad you enjoyed it
I love your Japanese recipe❤ And the other bonus is I have used my instant pot cooker for the first time in sautéing and pressure cooking this recipe ! Awesome job 👏
Thank you!
Just bought a big batch of this stuff and didnt even think to use the Instant Pot! Cant wait to try it out tonight thanks so much for the video!
Thank you and hope you like it!
Just made it exactly, it’s so delicious! Thank you.
Thanks for trying the recipe and glad u enjoyed it!
So I just discovered you can totally substitute a can of diced tomatoes for some of the water and gd it's changing my world. And I have a lot of products from different Asian cuisines so I've been adding gochujjan as well. It's awesome
@@tahitianmoon1439 like canned ones, and it just kinda changes the flavor a bit. Obvs, you need to like tomatoes but yeah. I almost always add a can of tomatoes with the water and cubes now
It’s like put a raw salmon on a Italians pizza. I’m sure Japanese will be please to see people follow the their recipe.
@@คนไทย-ล9ฟi totally get what you’re saying because most home cooks think they’re “chef’ng it up with their tweaks, but with this style of curry you should add whatever the hell you want. Japanese curry tweaks is what makes this yoshoku dish unique for each family that makes it. Like the other commenter adding tomatoes, which might also be good with some heavy cream. However it tastes, it will always be unique rather than just the out of the box flavor.
Try adding two bay leaves and tow stocks celery. Make it thicker by adding a slurry of 1Tbs corn starch and 2Tbs warm water.
Tried the recipe with 2 cups of low sodium chicken broth and 1 cup water...hubby went for a second serving! Super easy and so yummy!
Aw thank you so much! So glad you and your husband enjoyed it!
I have the same hot pot and never thought of making curry in it. Seems so much easier and less clean up!
It is much much easier!!
Great recipe! Here's my slight adjustment. Put the curry into a pot with 3 cups of water and melt the curry, then add that into the pot. This makes sure the curry is fully dissolved.
Thanks for sharing feedback!!
we have Chinese exchange students with us and I bought this curry . the only problem is they took the trays out of the box and threw it away! I have no idea how to use the curry in a recipe and the students are no help , so this recipe looks great and the part showing the instructions on the box is a huge help..... thanks
I love that brand of curry. Have a great new year!
Same here!! Have a great year, Judy!
"awww shiiiit look at this curry!" my fav line, thank you
😂 thanks for watching!
For simplicity, this is hard to beat. Carrot, onion, potato, meat and a ton of those curry cubes. I wonder how they make those cubes, anyway? I know it's basically a spiced roux that's prepackaged, but I wanna make my own!
I've done it recently. You do make a roux. Just cook equal parts unsalted butter and flour on your lowest heat setting and stir it for friggin years as it goes from white to creamy to yellow to tan and then brown. Once it's dark enough and smells kinda nutty, add in some curry spices (curry powder works great). Then you pour it into a baking dish (preferably with parchment paper in it, foil works too. It's a pain to get it out of the dish otherwise) and let it cool until solid in the fridge.
Ive always wanted to cook this curry. So I'm definitely buying all those ingredients and making this 👌
Ohhh man that was so easy and delicious 😋 I just used vegan chicken instead. So comforting I'll definitely make it again! Thank you!
@@annettericci9588 thanks so much! So glad you enjoyed it
Thanks for the quick, easy and tasty tutorial!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for instant pot guide. Have enjoyed japanese curry rice since small child. Some like add chocolate, ketchup or even coffee but I prefer original recipe. Goes so well with pickle ginger and fukujinzuke but it very expensive here. Rarely have this lately due to diet but Kagami Biraki coming soon so special time and also will make zenzai for good luck in 2023.
Thank you!!
Sounds awesome. Id add mushrooms but so blown away with all the great meals you can make with the electric pressure cooker
It makes cooking so much easier!
Great recipe! Every time I make Japanese curry in my Ninja Foodi, I pull up this video to guide me. I end up cutting the potatoes into larger chunks so it doesn't dissolve too much. To make things easier, I use the baby carrots and add them in at the end after everything is cooked. By the time it's ready to serve, carrots are nice and cooked!
Thank you for referring to my video as a guide! I too like to use baby carrots to save time 😊
Baby carrots are great. Waxy potatoes might save you a headache. The thickening comes from the curry roux cubes so losing a little starch won't kill you.
I frequently make basically this recipe but substituting out potatoes entirely for daikon radish.
I just got a pressure cooker and wanted to know if it could save me time on the recipe and I see so many great suggestions in the comments too.
I’ve had a box of this in my cupboard for ages, inspired me to cook it tonight.
How was it?
making this for the first time tonight, thank you for your video to guide me through it!! I too love japanese food, culture, ALL OF IT!! haha!! Arigato
I hope you enjoyed it! Arigato for watching!
Just found your channel . This is do awesome . Insta pot dinners . I’m a bachelor hate washing too many pots / dishes . Lol
I get it! I have no time for dishes either lol
Yes that is the best curry sauce mix. I can do both great chicken and beef curry, I used this growing up in Hawaii.
This looks really good! We are doing a regular themed dinner with our neighbors and our next dinner is going to be a Japanese theme. I may have to make this curry! Thanks!
Thanks I hope everyone enjoys it!
@@rackoflam D'oh! I just was getting ready to order the curry block packages but when I looked at the ingredients, it has wheat flour. My wife and daughter are celiac and can't have anything with wheat or gluten or it does terrible things to their guts. Bummer! I have to come up with a different recipe. :( Just have to figure out a way to substitute the blocks as best as possible AND still have it thicken up a little.
LOVE S&B Curry! Now I have to try cooking it in the pressure cooker! Thanks again!
Thanks for tuning in!
for my spice lovers, drizzle some tabasco over the curry/rice, mix it up and eat it with a side of kim-chi / pickled stuff. soo tasty :)
I love this recipe. I usually cook Japanese curry in stove top. I will try to cook it using my new Instant Pot later. Thanks!
❤️❤️❤️
I love the medium hot. Favorite curry. thai green curry is #2. and chicken thighs are the GOAT.
好感動。祝福你們的家庭永遠快樂!合家平安!
I LOVE CURRY !!! MY WHOLE FAMILY LOVES CURRY...Thank you for teaching me how to cook curry with Instant Pot.
We enjoy your easy IP recipes. 😊 Questions: if we use half of the box of curry, do other ingredients need to be cut in half?
Yes! Especially the water or the curry will be very diluted
Sometimes when I'm feeling extra lazy, I'll use the curry and vegetable mixture to top a piece of boneless fried chicken either store bought or from KFC. It makes for a decent katsu curry if you don't have the time or energy to make your own katsu from scratch :D
That sounds like a great idea for a lazy night!!
This looks good! I can’t wait to make it! But random question:
1- If I wanted to use a steak fillet would I follow the same steps? Because I don’t want the meat to dissolve in the pot
I havent tried with steak but they should work! Let me know how it goes
I tried it today!! It’s really good! And the meat didn’t dissolve. I also added bouillon cubes for more flavor
I just made a version of this in the crock pot and it was heavenly
Thank you 😊
THANK YOU FOR THIS!! I love Japanese curry and I love my instant pot but the first time I made it in the instant pot I added the 5 cups of water and it ruined it! Trying this tonight!
I hope you enjoyed it!
Your recipe is great!
Thanks so much!
It’s so delicious can’t stop eating 😋😋😋
So glad you like it!
I haven't checked all the other comments, but one other great curry pack to look for is another Japanese import one called Vermont Curry. I got a local import shop near me that deals with model kits and stuff, but they also have various Japanese ice creams and candies and curry packets, and I find the Vermont ones just as good as the S&B or maybe even better. I haven't had them side by side..
I have tried Vermont Curry as well! I think it is equally delicious 😋
Tonight I'm trying my Vermont Curry packs, with the above instructions. This should be fun :>
The initial shit being censored but the second one near the end not giving a crap hahaha! You're too cute. Thanks for uploading this. I will be making a Japanese curry for the first time using the extra hot cubes and some beef and mushrooms. I'll be browning everything in cast iron before instant pot transfer and substituting the water for some unsalted chicken stock as well, maybe adding a splash of red wine to deglaze. Sending love to the family!
I made this recipe and turned out great! Next will experiment with whole chicken thighs. May precook the thighs and then follow this recipe as given but adding thighs. Love the background music BTW.
Thank you! So glad u enjoyed it!
Tried this today, was super good (took out the meat and added more vegetables as I'm vegan, also used the medium hot version of the stock). Thanks for the recipe!
I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
How hot was the medium hot?
@@rebekahwolkiewicz449 It's tasty, but it isn't very hot.
Any healthier options to S&B? I love it but hate that it has MSG! 😩
this looks so good! definitely trying it out tomorrow, hope i can make it right. Thanks for the recipe gorgeous!🥰
Thank you!!
I’ve been using S&B Golden Curry since l lived in Okinawa back in the 1980’s. Best for Japanese curry!
Using Instant Pot is a great idea 💡
😊
I love this brand! And want to try the slow cook function instead. Do you think the potatoes will be cooked enough after a 6-8 hour day on slow cook ?
I think so! Good luck!
Thanks for your video..easy and simple..ありがとうございました😊
Thank you!
Lol love the quirky humor. Nice vid!
Haha thanks for watching!
I've been doing a similar thing with stew beef in my "off-brand" multi-cooker. You can use various meats and the prep is similar with beef, pork, and lamb. My dearly departed Japanese mother always used S&B curry and I've grown so fond of the taste as a reminder of her wonderful cooking. I also want to try other types of curry roux for their flavor profiles. Enjoy!
I find Japanese Curry to very good, Jamaican Curry I can’t do too much to often I add knoor chic basevpower wish I had a golden curry recipe homemade
Thank you for this!
I love this curry! Also, great video. Thank you for such efficient tips.
Thank you!
👍🏻👍🏻Thank you for sharing this delicious instant pot recipe! It amazing all the things we can make in our instant pots. I’m adding this to my list of recipes to try. I make TH-cam cooking videos too and my favorite cooking videos to make are instant pot recipes. I hope we can learn more from each other. 👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you!
I also add celery, green/red peppers, and a table spoon of oyster-saucer to mine💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽 Its delicious nonetheless
I’m cooking this tonight, hope it’s delicious! Wish curry didn’t have msg. Oh well….I will do an updated comment after I devour the curry.😊
Ok I just tried this a few minutes ago. It was pretty good but I just feel like it needed an umphhhh!!! Maybe I will try reducing my water to 2 cups only. Maybe I’m just not used to curry that is not strong. I was expecting like Indian curry strong but this was more subtle. I do like it and I will make it again. Super easy to make. Thank you, can’t wait to try your other dishes.👍😊
Thanks for trying!! Yes, Japanese curry is more subtle and on the sweeter side, whereas Indian curry incorporates more spices. I love both either way 😊
I love a thick Japanese curry!! It was the first meal I had when I went to Japan. I especially love adding fukujinzuke for the added texture and crunch.
Japan!! I wanna go so badly 😭
@@rackoflam I do too!! I'd like to spend a few months there once I start my travel vlogger career.
@@StephEatsnTravels take me with you! 😋
This was very well done. Gonna try it. Thank you! 🌿✌️
Thank u!! Hope you like it
Nice recipe, thanks for sharing. It's so easy to cook and keep. Personally I like bigger chunks of potatoes.
My husband loved this recipe; Thanks for sharing! Is there a pdf or printable file for the instructions? :)
Yes! You can find them on rackoflam.com ☺️
Happy to see a cube easy
This came out soupier than I usually go for, but there was also much less stirring 👍. Careful not to burn the bottom when you use a stove.
I find that letting the curry sit a bit in the Instant Pot after cooking allows it to thicken before serving. If not, you may add less water. Hope you enjoyed it nonetheless!
Nice! Very helpful, thanks 😊
Thanks for tuning in!
Thanks for the tutorial!
Thanks for watching!
Looks delish.
Oh the curry too hehe
How many servings does this make?
WOW.... This is great and delicious. looking TY ...
love to try can I substitute chicken stock and maybe pasta shells lol don't judge me love your humor
I haven’t tried but let me know how it goes!
Omg just found your channel and I love your content! There’s actually an instant pot in my house that’s been sitting for a while and I would love to try your recipe! 🥰❤️
Aww thanks for the kind words! You’re going to love the Instant Pot!
You need to brown the chicken first to get maillard effect and dont overcrowd it
Love curry, this was a great video, need to purchase a Instant Pot, Peace.
Thank you!! You won’t regret buying one if u do! ✌️
I just got this curry gonna make it tonight pray it's good
I hope you like it!
Exactly what I was looking for, thank you!
You’ve got very pretty eyes. My grandmother used to cook this for us. Thanks.
Thank you! ❤️
I like this recipe I'm gonna try it tomorrow 😁

I love it girl❤❤❤
Thank you!
If i just want a thick creamy curry broth for my udon noodles how much water do you use with one cube?
Don't forget to sprinkle S&B Sansyo pepper on top. (Japanese green pepper). 👍
I absolutely love this video. I'm so sad though because I've tried making this multiple times but every time i get a burn notice :(
That has happened to me multiple times! Make sure the lid ring is secure!
That is such a cool instant pot lol. One dish to rule them all, I'm not a hobbit fan
Wow interesting! I've trying to find SB carry sauce for couple years now. Where do you buy that from?
I get it from the local Asian supermarket but If you have trouble finding, I included links in the description to where you can purchase them
Beauty is here again
Amazing ❤
Thanks for the Great Video
Easy and Delicious 👍
Thank you!
How much water should we add
It's in my recipe - 3 cups
for how many people to serve on that recipe?
I believe it is 12 servings per the S&B curry
Arigatou 😍
I love this Maggie!!
Yay! Thank you beautiful! ❤️
If you cut the recipe in half meaning you only use half the vegetables and only one block of the curry mix does that mean you have to cut the cooking time in half?
No I would stick with the same cooking time
This is one of the best things I have made in a long time. A+++
I am so glad to hear that! Thank you!
I am making this again today
@@rachaelmachado9464 Yay! I make this quite often too 😅
