I think what is missing here is that this is cinema camera. comparing to a Sony or a Panasonic misses the point. Sure they have autofocus, but as soon as you stick a cinema lens on them, you're back to manual.
This is most comparable to the Red cameras. Those you have to build out as well. But the Komodo is $6K. The Komodo X is $10K. And rigging them out is crazy expensive. The Red 7" monitor is $2700. The Blackmagic is $800.
This is for someone who wants to get into independent filmmaking. People who are making independent movies and don't have a Red budget.

I get your point, but I think the whole “cinema camera” thing is overblown. If it has the same sensor as any number of non-“cinema” cameras, what’s the difference? Form factor, ports. I’m just trying to keep it on an even keel

@@PhillipRPeck I largely agree with you. I shoot with Panasonic cameras and they have way more video quality then I need. I want a cinema camera. I certainly don't need one
I also understand why someone making independent films on a budget would like this. For those people 12 bit internal Raw and the form factor with those ports matters.
For most of us, it's not a camera we need. For those in that niche, I get why they're excited

@@PhillipRPeck "what’s the difference?" A lot of it is simply a tactile thing. Its hard to explain, but compare it to something like the a7s3 that was brought up in this comments. Sony menus are awful. I know this will sound silly at first but when you are shooting a film, the sun is coming down, you have an entire crew of people waiting on you, you don't want to be wasting brain energy trying to remember where things are saved. A cinema camera is just really well streamlined. And this is just the menus, the form factor really really does make a difference. It may sound pretentious or what ever but it just a feel you develop for after shooting films.

    • @andredemony
      @andredemony หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Here is a sensible comment. There is a big misunderstanding about what Blackmagic aims for and what it is meant to address. I think possibly because of the low price they offer.
Until we get your hands on this device, and USE IT, it is hard to tell if it was a hit or miss by Blackmagic. All the "shortcomings" mentioned are there to prevent this model sales to cannibalize the URSA mini current S35 line. Every manufacturer does this. This is a more flexible form factor to pair with the cinema Camera 6K, the second being the run and gun ready tool. If you need AF you should go for Sony, Canon, Panasonic or Fuji. You know, the ones that make ultra compact all-purpose cameras. Blackmagic never did that.

10bit 422 to 12bit raw is as much or more then 8 to 10bit.
Braw is maybe the best codec out there file size/quality/easy to process.
pro res raw is not working on davinci.
external monitor raw is fiddly as hell for any gimbal, steadycam op.
Grading anything not raw (mind alexa and some sony's in 444) is a pure pain.
I do agree on point of the screen on the side, should be smaller and articulating, or on top like komodo.
FPS is the only thing i have real grudge about, should've have 48/50 in open gate for 24/25 slow down as a lot of us doing music videos.

As someone who shoots on the Pocket 4K + Pocket 6K for doc style and corporate the form factor change is extremely welcome.
I get the gripe around the sensor, but I only shoot 25p so that doesn't bother me - could care less about slow mo. However it still looks great coming out of Blackmagic tuned to its colour science, there is a difference with BRaw internal and other brand external even if it's the same 'variation of' sensor.
What makes this perfect for what I do, is that I could quite happily pack 3 of these with batteries and limited accessories and lenses into one suit camera case, have another suitcase for lighting and a bag for tripods / stands - no more unnecessary rigging and bulky accessories, and you really wouldn't need a screen for any of them when put on sticks into a 3 cam interview set up, unless you had 2 on sticks and just one floating cam with a top handle + screen.
Easily can mount this to a superclamp for creative angles too, and just know one BPU battery on each will last up to 3 hours. You simply can't do that on the hybrid's realistically.
You're right it's not a revolutionary camera - but it is an exceptionally useful change, for those that like this system.

It's a first version of the camera, it's going to change with future versions, but they need to start somewhere. Can you imagine the complaints they would have had if they didn't add ANY screen at all? Or placed it on the top and made it smaller? It's an amazing alternative to the 6K Cinema Camera they recently released, and you're still getting the camera and the screen built in for the money without taking anything away. An amazing first step that will be built on in the future.

It's a constant battle and a fine line to try to walk, finding the line between promotion and coverage. On some level, even the most even-handed coverage of a product can be viewed as promotion because it's a piece of content about something that is for sale and you may end up influencing people to buy it.
I think TH-cam/Google shoulders the blame for the development of this algorithm and pushing the sales integration into the platform which incentivizes the click bait titles and thumbnails and embedding of product links and promotions into the content.
I think you're doing a great job, BTW. Definitely keeping it real and trying to encourage people to use what they have and improve their skills rather than buy new stuff all the time

  • @waveland

I suspect the front USB-C port will give BM the chance to develop a small screen alternative to the EVF. But as someone who does a fair amount of shoulder work still, having the full array of buttons on the side, along with a screen you don’t have to fold you like you do on the Ursa cameras, all adds up to a huge design plus as far as I’m concerned. In fact I will be shedding my last Ursa once the Pyxis becomes available. Mounted to a Tilta Lightweight Shoulder Rig it will work well for light duty run and gun. On sticks? Well I already own a Portkeys Bluetooth monitor which will let me make basic adjustments or I rig my phone to the top handle for monitoring and control. For those with a Pocket camera, the Pyxis line provides a solid step into entry-level cine builds (SDI, dedicated timecode in, dual CFExpress with hot swapping for long format live recordings, a real multi-hour battery, an EVF option worth owning and one that will follow you into the bigger cameras, dedicated Ethernet, a real Lemo style external power connector, etc.). Now does it make any sense in the real world for a Komodo or Sony FX6 user to dump their Red or Sony rig to pick up a Pyxis? Almost never. Those cameras are more expensive for a reason. But I do see the Pyxis as a solid piece of equipment for a lot or users. And the way I’ve been seeing FX3 cameras rigged these days into box format cages with the touch screen framed up *on the side* of the build, the Pyxis fits in with a number of current camera designs.

  • @focuspulling

Nice to finally see some straight talk about how this is nearly the same thing as the full-frame pocket that was already picked through at length (whereas all the blog posts and TH-cam raves just go down the feature list without reference to what's already there), though it's not a 6-year old sensor - the full-frame sensor is one year old and grounds-up different. Yeah, there are improvements that didn't matter to you, but they're huge for some users/use cases like me/mine. The BP-U battery interface accommodates high capacity versions that the BMPCC's NP-F550 slot restricted to less than an hour of use, without slinging an external dock. I'm gonna love the extra pixels in the 3:2 open gate capture: there's no downside to having more image to reframe later, besides storage space which is a nominal concern these days. I'm in the minority who prefers the side monitor location: this is going to be my static master shot camera and whenever I'm setting mine up, I like standing next to the camera, especially when there's no room to stand behind it. I put in my order right away, excited that compared to the full-frame Pocket, this one gives me native EF, leveraging the full-frame EF lenses I got for my BMPCC6K Pro. And let's not forget what asses like Sony would charge for this!
My only critiques are that they ought to have engineered a Wi-Fi remote control/viewing capability in the strategy of Z-CAM's pioneering box cameras, tamping down the criticisms of the side monitor. And, they did a poor job explaining that this will only take the new viewfinder with a USB-C port, for which they haven't yet created a product listing/SKU/pre-order plan.

Great points. I think those that say they prefer the Blackmagic look are probably subconsciously doing so based exclusively on color science now. Everything else quality wise with the image is pretty much the same on other cameras now. Dynamic range, rolling shutter, bit depth, compression(mostly), and read-out speeds are, as you've pointed out, not any better with the Pyxis. Really the only thing they have going for them is the color science and some might argue a superior codec, but that lead is very small and will only diminish going forward. They need to get the form factor right and get price more competitive again. This camera is too big for having the same guts as a BMPCC 6k. If they were able to basically shrink the BMPCC 4k to the size of the Micro Studio Camera 4K G2, then they could have made this one much smaller. Definitely going to require a larger gimbal. I'm guessing the push to keep that size screen is what bloated the entire design. They should have just shipped it with a stripped down video assist that could navigate the menus and skipped the built in screen.

Plus its not gonna be balanced for the operator. Doesn't seem like anyone ever though of that at BM lol. imo manufacturers should just go the Arri way with an EVF combined with an LCD like the MVF-2, and if they want they could also build a dedicated camera control monitor like the CCM-1 (i wonder if the BM video assist could have a camera control update via software lol). Instead, they should just make a small calculator-like LCD on the side so we can access the menu but thats it, no need to see the video feed on the camera.

Everyone would automatically be using a 7" 12G HDR. Even if the 4" LCD panel flipped out... I wouldn't use it because it's too small. You already countered your "own argument" about the BM side LCD by saying you wouldn't want to use the top LCD on the Komodo X. Yeah, because the Komodo screen is only 2.9". It's also too small to use. And the Komodo X is three times the price. This is why people are going to be selling their Komodo X and buying the PYXIS 6K. I don't quite agree with everything you've said. What stands out to me is that the box camera style allows for rigging etc, which is nice and does have a tangible impact on how the footage looks, largely because you can change your style of camera for each shoot. So handheld becomes much more handheld (if you know what I mean) unlike a mirrorless which is never going to be as comfortable as for handheld etc.
I personally use a Sony A7siii and the auto focus with low light performance plus 10 bit 4 log is 85% in the cinema look. But with all the other advantages for everyday use. I wouldn't want to use RAW with it though. Blackmagic is miles better for that along with RED. I would genuinely recommend not bothering with RAW on a Sony camera like that. It's just not the same experience.
The biggest stand out feature for me is the connectivity of this camera and the ecosystem BM is developing. I think that's what you do not get with mirrorless. SDI is significantly better than HDMI for studio use. USB port for a EVF is a really good idea. Hopefully also means monitor for the operator and additional port for streaming. Memory options like SSD storage out is genuinely brilliant and I wish I had that.
But the biggest feature might be the ethernet port for studio use. Imagine just shooting with 4 of these in a studio and the footage is being automatically uploaded to your NAS system?
But I do appreciate what you're saying. You can get good results with other things but it is the useability of this camera. I also completely agree with the screen placement and the fact that they're not offering a screen that can control the menu externally. So to change menu settings you have to go to the side of the camera? Madness.
But everything else is a good idea.
And don't forget, a new body simply needs a new sensor and processor. So next year they might add in a new sensor and sell a $5k model.

My gripe with it is it's really designed only for cinema, as freelancer, I value flexibility and ease of use. This camera isn't really good for sit down interviews because it has only one xlr audio port. It only films in RAW. There are many jobs that are quick turn around or color grading RAW isn't needed, or someone else is doing the editing and they don't use DaVinci. Not having a flip out screen, no ND, no ProRes, or H264... I could go on but you get the picture. I think BM sales are going to suffer because this camera is designed for a small niche. For Pocket 6k users this isn't really an upgrade and you're trading value and flexibility for single purpose camera. The design of the body is huge man, not sure why you keep saying it’s not a new camera. The Red Raptor is the same sensor as the helium, but the raptor is a MUCH better camera. All sensors are good, it’s not really about that anymore. This has a 3:2 ff sensor, in raw, internal. The only other camera that does that is Alexa mini LF. Offering all the IO of a production camera with 12 bit raw and a 3:2 sensor, I think you may be missing how huge of a leap this is for the middle tier market. This ain’t a doc camera, for sure, but for commercial, narrative, editorial, etc, it offers more bang for your buck than literally anything else. Making comparisons to hybrid cameras needs to stop. The onboard monitors of Canon EOS cinema cameras we used are perfectly usable with excellent clarity, focus assist tools and a waveform that is easy to toggle on/off.

But people keep complaining about things like the monitor, or the audio port, but this camera isn't meant for people for whom those things are an issue. this camera is meant for someone who is, like you said, going to rig it out with a separate monitor, and only use the built in monitor for the menus. this camera has a very specific target customer... it is also, like you said, not new. Zcam has been doing the exact same things for years at the same price point. I compare these things better in my video on it th-cam.com/video/BJ3MWs7ELn4/w-d-xo.html

I said it's the same sensor as the a7III, S1, S1H, Z6, Z6II, Zf, S5, S5II, S5IIX, AND the 6K Full Frame. I also said that the people who this camera is for (professional indie cinematographers like you), should totally get this camera if it makes sense for them; but my beef is with the YT hypesters who want to convince everyone that this camera is the second coming.

A lot of your questions/complaints about the side screen and the ND filters etc were actually addressed by the Blackmagic Rep in interviews on a few other channels. Long story short there will been a Pyxis 2 coming sooner than later. As their firs box style camera at this price point they had to start somewhere.
I for one would love to see them implemented autofocus in these type of cameras and Blackmagic is aware that a lot of people want this as well but they ain't going to put it in unless it's solid. No body wants to have garbage autofocus like the GH series had for years.

I am going to buy this camera for sure, because by far it's the ideal form of an entry level BMD cinema camera. I assume BMD had released the 6k Fullframe earlier for some unusual/untellable reason, otherwise it's definitely gonna be a WOW camera if this PYXIS is the first one with the sensor initiating a new product line.
But I agree with you that it is generally exactly the same camera as the BMCC 6K Fullframe, the hype is over exaggerated and most of the TH-camrs are just hyping it for clicks. Talking about the AF or the sensor technology, I think it's quite the prosumer/hybrid videographer oriented perspective, I would rather say it's probably not a direct competition to the hybrid options as the S5iiX etc, as a LUMIX S and BMD user myself, it's more than welcoming that BMD has joined the L alliance and making my L-Mount lens collection serve for more systems. But to be honest, I don't see a better or worse between the PYXIS and LUMIX S, they basically are serving very different shooting scenarios. The core value of the BMD system is as an economic solution for cinematography centers around the BRAW + Davinci Resolve, thus BMD is more likely about film school or indie film production rather than the run and gun one man band style of fast paced jobs IMO.

Based on your review of this camera, I have lost all respect for your reviews. Six years ago, you reviewed the original BMPCC and gave it a favorable review on almost everything. But now you're on a rant, but not really, though, right? I was one of the 1st people in the country to have the original BMPCC, and I also reviewed the camera. You, of all people, should know That when these cameras shipped out, we didn't even have a histogram meter, let alone focus peaking, and please, let's not talk about the screen size. But the incredible image quality and the built-in preamps are basically all we had. If you were an early adopter of one of these cameras, you understood one thing: you could compete with anything on the market for a fraction of the cost, and that concept has yet to be lost on this camera. Reviewing a camera and slamming it before having the physical camera in your hands is dishonest, to say the least, and downright foolish. Yes, I said foolish, and it is a good ole recipe for buffoonery. Had you not given the original BMPCC a good review and owned the camera itself, I would have not commented on this video, but you did, so here we are. Videos for clicks are a real thing, but honesty has honor and, in the long term, builds trust and a loyal following. With that said I no longer trust your reviews.

@@PhillipRPeck Let's assume you are correct about using this sensor on many other cameras. Why are these other manufacturers offering their cameras at such a high price point if that's the case? The Pyxis 6k comes with Resolves Gen 5 color science and a studio copy of Resolve, so where is the perceived lack of value? You also mentioned the fixed monitor on the camera's left side as a poor choice for a 1st AC. I was a 1st AC for five years and have never used a monitor to pull focus, and I have been in the filmmaking business for almost 30 years. Now, let's talk about rolling shutter. Arri, The King of all digital cameras, also lacks a global shutter. I'm saying this because it isn't an issue if you know how to shoot. I recently shot on the BMPCC 6k with high-speed shots without a single problem onset, and it has the very same sensor. This is the most riggable camera on the market the whole concept of the camera is to make it your own.

      @PhillipRPeck  หลายเดือนก่อน

Every other camera I mentioned besides the S1H and BS1H are cheaper than the PYXIS. The BMD 6K Full Frame is also cheaper. I wouldn't recommend anyone pay $3500-$4000 for a new S1H or BS1H in 2024 but you can find them used or on sale for cheaper than the PYXIS.
How many productions with the budget for a 1st AC would be using a $3000 PYXIS? Let's be real about who this camera is for.
Resolve Studio is definitely a nice value add. You can still purchase an S5IIX plus a Resolve Studio license for less than a PYXIS.
