Reduction Firing my Rohde KG-340 Gas Kiln with SIC Shelves and Glaze Test Tiles

  • A video all about packing and firing my Rohde KG-340 gas kiln. I recently received from SIC kiln shelves too, which made packing all the more pleasurable and together with firing lots of glaze tests recently it has made for some very exciting kiln firings.
    0:00 - Unpacking SIC, (Silicon Carbide) kiln shelves
    2:16 - Preparing cone packs, (cones 8, 9 & 10)
    5:50 - Packing gas kiln
    15:34 - Firing gas kiln
    21:23 - Unpacking gas kiln
    22:19 - Some glaze test tiles
    23:53 - Example of an under-fired pot
    24:19 - The destruction of a crawled espresso cup
    24:42 - Photographs of finished pots and macro images of glazes
    26:29 - Cleaning glaze off of kiln shelf
    Wadding recipe: 50% china clay, 50% coarse alumina hydrate, mix powders and then add water very slowly as the mixture tends to turn too watery very easily. So better to take it slow. Once it has a clay like consistency you can wedge it up and store it in an air tight container.
    Although Rohde gifted me the kiln shelves we never discussed having a video made about them or mentioning Rohde, I simply do so as I'm a fan of the shelves and of the company. In the past we have had arrangements for discounts in exchange for promotion but this is just a pottery enthusiast talking about shelves.
    Thanks as always for watching!

    "If you you made it this far..." Who can resist this highly addictive format?
    The excellent craftmanship, the softspoken flood of information, the awesome editing
    and then on top of all witnessing the breath taking results of hard work and meticulous execution.
    Humble mastery instilling the wish to become an artisan myself.
    Simply inspiring.

    I didn't realise you col repair pinholes in the glaze by re-firing with some more glaze over them. I had this problem with a couple of pots in my last firing so I'll give that a go. Useful information - thank you!

    Love your videos. This one about your firing schedule is just amazing. Keep the good work and the pieces look superb. And it always hit me the number of details a potter has to endure from the wheel to the unloading. Not easy.

    First, congratulations on another sold out shop in minutes. Second, a potentially unforeseen safety issue in your practice-The Henry hoover is possibly not rated for fine glass dust filtration and therefore could be blowing the dust back into the air you are breathing. You ought to have a LEV 03 certified vacuum for this work I believe. I know how seriously you take dust control so hope this helps.

      Pleased to hear so! I'll make a more thorough video about my glaze testing soon and about the whole process really but I think I need to upgrade my computer soon, storage wise, that's literally what's holding me back from making more detailed, longer videos, but then again, maybe short and sweet is best, I don't know! Thanks for watching!

    Would love to use some of those lightweight shelves myself.
    We have some 30mm thick old style ones and it nearly breaks my fingers placing them on the props.
    Do you need to flip them over each firing so they don't warp ?
    Good stuff.

    • @floriangadsby
      @floriangadsby  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      They’re amazing things. I can’t stand the old heavy ones, they can be a nightmare to slide into the kiln. These SIC shelves can withstand being fired to 1400°c, so they don’t warp whatsoever, which is a joy. The shelf industry is a bit mad in the UK, like you might know. It’s a monopoly and the guy doesn’t want to import these sorts of shelves, perhaps because they do last people their lifetimes as opposed to the others than need replacing rather a lot. I’ve heard some good things about a shelf supplier in France. Anyway, can’t recommend these SIC shelves enough, they’re a bit pricy but worth every penny in terms of ease of use and their sturdiness.

    Does more pot getting pack inside using the new shelves help you with the reduction firing process.

    • @floriangadsby
      @floriangadsby  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, supposedly the more dense the pack the easier it is to achieve reduction, but it was just as packed previously with the last shelves too. It fires quicker with thin shelves though! Which is a bonus.

And there you go! And click replay again and increase the volume back! Good luck and happy watching! 😀
