The lyrics are meant to be a relationship between human kind and Mother earth, Amy Lee is the Mother Earth voice and Oli's singing as the Human Race answering back. It's about how we've destroyed the earth and we are running out of time to turn it back, we kept pushing our luck and one day there will be no air for us to breathe, we can't breathe on our own and the Earth doesn't want us to be burry us but nothing gets through our skull to understand it. Listen to it again with this perspective in mind. It's a whole lot deeper than just a "toxic love relationship", it's meant to be believed it is like that, but the protagonist are us and the Earth.
