- 寛永9（1632）年肥後国主として入国した細川忠利侯に仕えた林又七が、鉄砲や刀の鐔に象がんを施したのが祖とされます。
江戸時代この林家のほか平田家・西垣家・志水家・神吉家などにより、肥後鐔の名品が数多く残されています。明治9年（1876年）の廃刀令以降は、装身具や装飾品に転じ、日常生活の変化に対応した製品が作られています。
The Higo inlay craft can be traced to the craftsman Hayashi Matashichi. Supported by the local feudal lord, Hayashi performed inlay metalwork on firearms and sword guards during the first half of the 17th century. His style of sword guard continued to be produced by generation after generation of the Hayashi family and was later taken up by other families, including the Hiratas, Nishigakis, Shimizus and Kamiyoshis, on through to the Edo era (1600-1868). In fact, many examples of their work remain in existence today. When the carrying of swords was outlawed in 1876, the Higo craftsmen turned their focus to decorative work and began making everyday items in line with the new social norms.

Was surprised to see the deer's antler used this way. Coming from a family of hunters, it's almost always used for display or just discarded. Respecting an animal you hunt, to me, means using as much of it as you can. Seeing that there are practical uses for this part that's often forgotten (unless it's very beautiful) is a relief.
When does he use deer antlers? I don't see him doing that.

象嵌は「象 (かたち) を嵌め込む」と書くので、インレイのような工法を想像していました。
タガネで布目を打って表面になじませるんですね。リズミカルなハンマーワークで、均一で細かい布目を作っているのでしょう。

How is it that the brass comes attached to the steel? Is it only by hammering?
I take by your name that you're Spanish, but I'm answering you in English because it's interesting for the international crew. It's the same as damasquinado (damascene work). The initial striation of the surface creates raised "peaks" of steel. Hammering the softer metal (usually gold) over them drives those peaks into the softer metal and bends them, anchoring the inlay. Main diference betwen Japanese and Spanish technique being just that far East of Eurasia they use a crisscrossed chisseling, and far West they use a very hard blade to make crisscrossed surface cuts. Otherwise, identical.
@@notfeedynotlazy Very very interesting, really nice comparison. At first I thought you meant damascus steel, but I realized that couldn't be similar since damascus steel is forged. But I remembered this Pelikan fountain pen with the Toledo engraving, and it's really similar indeed. It's like a soft inlay fused into a harder base metal. Thanks for the answer!
@@notfeedynotlazy Thank you very much for the answer. I knew that the crisscross chiselling must be the secret to fixing the gold inlay by only just hammering, but didn't know how it worked. And now I had also learnt what damascene work is-I hadn't heard of that before. One learns something new everyday!

Very similar to Spanish damasquinado. Seems that origami / papiroflexia isn't the only art that has developed at both extreme sides of Eurasia :-)
