I have used my Woodland pattern medium Alice Pack since 1992 and have no problems with it. In the early days, I used large plastic bags from the supermarket to waterproof the things I packed. Later I used shopping bags and ziplock bags. A heavy duty 2x3 metre tarp was strapped to the bottom with a foam roll. On top went my sleeping bag with a military tarp wrapped around it. The pockets had the mozzie net, some fishing gear and small odds and ends. Four canteens of water and an axe attached. Other miscellaneous items were sometimes added to the waist belt.
Great video. I've found that a couple of Woodland Sustainment pouches can extend your range if you're going out for more than a couple days. They'll clip nicely to the side of an ALICE pack.
In addition to keeping everything protected from rain, another good reason to use a waterproof bag to store all items in (albeit not very applicable to civilians) during waterborne operations the pack will float! Adding additional closed-cell foam (sleeping mat) to the hip pad, frame and shoulder straps will provide additional comfort (eventhough ALICE packs are not very comfortable) this will help with heavier loads. Tip: Use carabiners to hook gloves, extra rope etc to the outside of the pack (carabiners are also very useful for shelter building, etc.).
I have no problem with cutting out the radio pouch, my issue is cutting the adjustment out of the straps. If you use the the strap keepers properly you still have adjustment options. Go to the end of your strap and fold 1.5 in to 2 in keep folding until you are by the buckle end then slide the elastic strap keeper up over the folded bundle, the loose straps are controlled and your adjustment is still available. Shoulder straps just tuck the excess into the frame pocket of the pack body and its still available when you need to adjust for heavy winter clothing. Being in Alabama you really don' know real winter, come about 2500 miles north in January.
I watched your previous video on the Alice pack and stopped by the hardware store on the way home to get some 3/8 fuel line. I have almost everything I need now to get started. Thanks for today's video.
I'm 6'2" and had the same problem with the medium Alice pack. I am using the large now and it's much easier to distribute the weight.rerunning the straps around the pack frame as Blackie shows in a previous video helps a ton.
I pack very similar to your set up. I also like water proof bags. I use different colors to indicate day one to how many days. Same goes for food, cooking in different marked bags. Rain gear rolled and put in bag vertically for easy access. (Weather reports are not reliable after first day) imo Only have one extra outer layer. Plenty of socks/underwear and base layers. Less is more, if you do not use a bag over the scheduled trip, you have to much. Water, water, water :-) Old Jarhead :-)
Great video thank you.love my old alice pack I have done few mods civilian frame and updated shoulder harness hip belt .Wow now I can hike in comfort haha military comfort lol.
Enjoyed the video. You mentioned using a garbage bag for a pack liner. Personaly, I like contractor bags for that. Little heavier and a little bigger. That's what I carry to pot refuse in as well. As always, thanks for sharing.
I use a heavy duty trash bag to line my medium Alice pack. I also attached a molle sleep system bag to bottom of pack to carry my sleeping bag, pillow, beanie, and extra socks I also line that bag with a trash bag. This allows more room in the main pack for equipment so it works well for me for winter camping.
Blackie, Another Great Video and Outstanding Information on the ALICE Pack. Thanks Again for sharing your time and knowledge. Also knocking the rust off of knowledge and sharping my back to where they need to be. You Are The Master Woodsman and Buschcrafter. I have been refreshing my Woodsman and Buschcrafter Skills. Tim L.
Thanks Blackie. I have used an alice for hunt, but never in a camp pack setup. Always had trouble organizing the contents well. I would love to hear more about finding that inner liner sack. Otherwise I guess the trash bag or drum liner would be great. Due to weight and climbing limitations where I tend to hunt, I learned to cut back to a mid size to mini pack for comfort, and speed, relative to a less than overnight objective. (extra layers, food, water, light, drag rope...back up tarp, cordage, fire kit if ever needed, knife, first aid, pen, compass..) I had little idea about how to use the top cinch before as well. I have some practicing to do.
Thanks Blackie, great video and information. I've been experimenting with different pouches to add to the outside of the pack to make more room on the inside of the pack like sustainment pouches, saw pouches and a first-aid kit pouch. That's one thing I need is a lightweight down sleeping bag though. That's been holding me back. Also I would be bringing a lightweight 2 - person tent instead of a hammock. Appreciate you doing another video on the Alice. Out of the many, many Alice pack videos I've watched, I think you are only the 3rd one that showed how you pack it! Have a great weekend. 👍👍
Funny but after watching this series I dug out my old Alice pack and I am in the process of loading it up for my Kentucky trip next week..lol Although I'll have my truck so my load will be quite different. mostly cook kit, first aid, cordage etc. great packing ideas though for future camps
Agreed. So many hikers and preppers set fires and talk about thier super sexy gear but Blackie is the only one I've seen pack WORK GLOVES. Such a simple thing but sometimes "been there, done that" is king.
Once again ty for the great tips on the Alice pack, are you going to do an update and tips for the large alice pack, those waterproof bags for the alice pack can be found on ebay, beware they smell badly, also the lashing straps can be found on ebay..Ty Blackie…
Hi Blackie, I have another question, when you were running your medium Alice pack, I was wondering what cookset you found to be the one you used most? was it the GI canteen cook set along with the GI mess kit (for frying pan and plate) or the Boy Scout kit? Thanks.
Another great Loadout I love my Alice pack had it for years was in the military can't wait for your next video. By the way do you live in a bird sanctuary

Love my Alice packs! I think I have about a half dozen of them. No need to buy expensive bags. Alice pack works just fine
I watched your previous video on the Alice pack and stopped by the hardware store on the way home to get some 3/8 fuel line. I have almost everything I need now to get started. Thanks for today's video.
That is awesome!
I used a tube carrier cut off an old battery. Works great as well.
Another good one we have our scouts all set their packs up the same way incase someone gets hurt first aid kits ext. are all in the same spot
good idea
I'm 6'6 and tried this pack for backpacking. I dont think my lower back ever hurt so bad in my life!

I am really enjoying this series Blackie, I am not an ALICE guy but I might just add one to my ruck collection. Appreciate you doing this.
Go for it!
