  • Sensible Survival Presents: "The No.1 Survival Backpack" which is the Military Surplus Alice Pack. It's high value for the money spent, it's extremely rugged and Durable, it's highly versatile and the add on Cargo Shelf takes this pack to a whole new level.
The Alice pack has been used by the U.S. Military to over 20 years until the '90's and has proven itself in tough situations. Found at yard sales, surplus stores, gun shows and Ebay, they run anywhere from $25 - $50 and a great buy for the quality received.
    Thanks for watching! Sootch00

ALICE: my best girlfriend ever! I still have my issue one

From what I was taught, the small inside pouch is for a radio. The d-rings and cords attached at the bottom are used to make the pack smaller or an "assault pack". I've had my medium for 25 years and it's still in great shape. Better if you consider the new straps with extra padding I now have on it. I've picked up a few more over the years for family. I just wait until I find one for a great price in good condition. Peace.

I've still got mine I was issued over 40 years ago when I enlisted in the Marine Corps. Still in excellent shape . One thing I really like is being able to fold a Field Jacket and tie it inside of the frame with para cord . Also, to keep the snaps on the 3 outer pockets front corrosion is to put a very light coat of grease on them .

The metal rings inside the medium Alice are to compress the pack to make it an assault pack. You can find instructions on ‘you tube’ how to configure this. I share your enthusiasm for the medium Alice having had a new modified pack with Fastex buckles installed instead of the standard configuration. I have a (now) discontinued ShellBack frame which doesn’t allow the shelf, my only regret. You’ve provided me with valuable information in the past, and I thank you, sir.

I've had my ALICE medium for 20+ years. I got it when I was a Reservist and I took it to Europe with me and went on my first deployment with me. My wife hates it cuz it's what I travel with when we go on vacation or back out west on leave.

I have the same size Alice Pack picked one up in 1983 still use it and to this day. everything you've said is 100% correct, rugged, roomy, strong, and many other uses besides a back pack and worth every penny. Great vid I have a lot of good memories and a couple not so good using the Alice Pack ;)

I carried one of these for many years as an infantryman, put it through a lot of hard use and never had any problems. They don't have the bells and whistles of modern gear, but they do their job just as well. Get a large, not a medium, and if you buy the frame make sure to check it thoroughly for cracks in the weld points, etc.

I got my Alice Packs(Med. and Lrg.) a while back and it was because of this TH-cam video. I drooled over it for what seemed like days and couldn't wait to use em. Almost want to get the Tactical Tailor Molle version but ehh...might as well save my money for something really nice.

The Alice packs are great , it's amazing how much stuff you can carry , these are so durable & you can get to any of your gear without unpacking everything , also buy the surplus dry bag to protect your sleeping bag , and rain pancho. These packs are tried and true. I got issued one that was a little beat so I tried to break mine to get a nice new one , I couldn't break or tear mine .

I have one of the newer backpacks which I purchased from the area Army National Guard Exchange and it is great and I got it at a bargain price. The brand is now used by the military and that was the reason I purchased it from them. The pack have the insert for a bladder, but I didn't get that and chose to use an extra canteen when going camping. The pack has plenty of room and is designed to be zipped up in each compartment and has the outer cover on it to secure my goods.

I took the assault pack off the CFP90 and placed it on my lg alice pack.
this makes for a great scouting bag after you set up camp,Plus it gives
Woodland Camo to the packs back. And of course the molle shoulder
    straps and kidney belt.

You can also pick up the frame alone with the shelf very reasonably. Every time I see one of those I think of Dick Proenneke toting in firewood in those great videos. That was well before the Alice pack, but it is the same idea.
I picked up a large Alice with new belt and the wider straps for less than $30. What a great deal.

Clean your Alice pack in soap and water, rinse with clear water and allow it to "DRIP DRY". Do not put your pack in a dryer. The Nylon fabric will shrink and harden making your pack unusable. Only drip dry! A lot of troops find out the hard way and a pack that had been damaged by heat could not be "D-X'd" so they would have to buy a replacement at Clothing Sales.
