I'm so glad you liked it! It was fun watching your confusion with all of the twists and turns. Of all of the Meg Ryan movies I've seen and loved, I believe this is her finest performance. Matt Damon went on a restrictive diet to look all strung out. Just a great movie. Everyone was on their A-game. And don't worry about not giving too much military background, I just enjoy watching the effect the movie has on you. I even got misty eyed toward the end.
The base where Lou and Denzel talk is an old base turned trade school in San Marcos, TX. I went there in '97 and was told this when I got there. Saw the movie while there and, sure enough, I saw, in the background of the driving scenes, some of the classroom buildings along with the barracks where we slept( and yes, some were still open-bay barracks). The same was done with the movie Idiocracy, using the place as a base for the movie. If you haven't seen it, give it a look. It's very prophetic for today.
This movie phucked me up. The take away is honor.
Oh, and for some recommendations, if you haven't seen them already. Some of my all time favorites: Galaxy Quest, Clue, The Fifth Element, The Princess Bride, Deep Blue Sea. Just a few movies off the top of my head to have some fun with after recommending something so heavy.

The military didn't support this movie, so they had to make do with wrong equipment, such as using a huey instead of a black hawk, and using some sort of british tank instead of abrams. Abrams use turbines instead of diesels, so have a very different sound compared to other tanks.
Calaveras lake is between san antonio and my hometown. It's a reservoir for a power station. I don't know if they actually filmed there, but i suspect not.
