Oscars, I noticed in the video at 1:56 seconds that Steven Spielberg is holding the statue to give to Robert Benton. Many years later when Steven Spielberg won an Oscar himself for _Schindler's List_ he says before that that he had never held an Oscar. I now have proof that this is not true!

though Apocalypse Now is a bit more of a timeless classic, Kramer vs Kramer is a worthy film.rA Director to Apocalypse and Picture to Kramer would have been a fair split. 1979 was surely one of the best years ever - those two, plus Being There, All That Jazz, Breaking Away, Manhattan, China Syndrome, Alien.

People complaining about Kramer vs Kramer should understand Oscar span time is much less than 12 months. Apocalypse Now is a typical 'like a fine wine' movie, which get better with age. It got mixed reception during the release. And other major reason, you might not know, the US edited version is much shorter which IMO affected the movie overall, hence why it lost to Kramer vs Kramer (same case with Once Upon a Time in America) . The longer, more complete version is the one which won Palme d'Or in Cannes Film Festival.

When Jaffe was referring to the importance of the Oscars to his family, he was talking about his dad, Leo Jaffe, who was an executive at Columbia Pictures when the studio was considered a "minor" studio, The elder Jaffe was sent out by studio boss Harry Cohn to recruit Constance Bennett for a lead female role in a Frank Capra comedy. Jaffe was unable to convince Bennett to take the role and it went to Claudette Colbert instead and she won the Best Acress Oscar for the Best Picture of 1934, "It Happened One night."

People all go on and on about Apocalypse Now but at the time Kramer Vs Kramer was the frontrunner to win. Divorce was a rare theme for a mainstream movie of the 70s so it was seen as offering something new and bold and that might be one of the reasons it won. Apocalypse was a war movie released the year after Deer Hunter won

None of this matters for an award called: BEST DIRECTOR, which should be awarded to the director who displayed the most merit with the story they were given.
If they wanted to give this movie an award for its story, there’s another category for that called BEST SCREENPLAY.

That’s the problem I have with the Academy they go by what appeals to them as opposed to what movie has been more memorable, more talked about and more praised each year. No wonder why the view ratings is so low each year.

I went to see it twice (with both endings) and was impressed, yet "Breaking Away" and "Norma Rae" were wonderful in their simplicity and solid storytelling. Ultimately, I think the documentary "Hearts of Darkness" is more interesting than the film it represents. Maybe we can agree it was a good year for films.

KRAMER VS KRAMER!?!?!?!?!?!? THIS IS WHAT WON BEST PICTURE, DIRECTOR, ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY OVER APOCALYPSE NOW!?!?!?!?!?!? WHAT THE FUCK!?!?!?!?!?!?! Were movies about the Vietnam war not socially acceptable at the time??? This movie is absolute garbage compared to Apocalypse Now... I've seen both, so this is at least a fair comparison. Crash isn't looking so bad now...

    • @happyfistcutscrap

Crash still looks pretty bad. Considering how the Academy voted for an Vietnam related film a year before, it's disappointing to see Apocalypse Now not winning Best Picture.

I kinda agree with you on that one, Kramer vs. Kramer didn't deserve Best Picture! Apocalypse Now deserved it more since it had lots of Brutal Action and Violence compared to those other films directed by Francis Ford Coppola and of course other films about the Vietnam war. And it may have won 2 Oscars, but they could've voted better to choose Apocalypse Now rather than Kramer vs. Kramer! I mean, Platoon won Best Picture of 1986! But how come, Apocalypse Now didn't!
It recieved a score of 99 out of 100 in Rotten tomatoes while Kramer vs. Kramer recieved 88!
I must say, I'm really disappointed!

+Chippy Vortex Kramer vs Kramer did not deserve Best Director or Picture Oscars. Hollywood rewarded it because Divorce was something near and dear to it's heart. No one remembers this film anymore, but Apocalypse Now and All That Jazz are considered Masterpieces.

I thought Kramer Vs. Kramer was a great Moive. I was going to say great LIttle MOvie, but it had some Major Stars in it or least one Major Star at the time (I think Meryl Streep was just beginning her Career then) Dustin Hoffman. What I meant is that there was no Big Special Effects or Big Spectacle Scenes like the Big War Scenes in Apocalypse War. It was just a well Written, well acted Drama about real People and a Family.
I never liked Apocalypse Now although I do love all the GodFather Movie- I even like Godfather 3. I think Platoon was a much better Vietnam Movie- not being Artsy like Apocalypse Now was trying to do.
I also think Breaking Away was a Great LIttle Movie that should get more attention.

Apocalypse now was released with an edited version in America in compare to the version which won Palm D'or at Cannes , i guess that is the reason Coppola lost both... Best picture and director.

Even though it was far from the best film, "Kramer" is an understanding BP winner gien divorce being a hot-button issue at the time. What IS a travesty is Benton winning BD OVER Fosse and Coppola. A simply atrocious decision by the Academy.

''Kramer vs. Kramer'' is a good movie. I can't say if the award was deserved or no, because I never watched ''Apocalypse Now'' or ''All that Jazz''. Anyway, Charlton Heston and Spielberg on the same stage is funny, because Charlton Heston wanted the role of Chief Brody in ''Jaws'' but Spielberg didn't liked the idea, because at that time Charlton was too famous. I heard that they had a little fight because of this. I heard it someplace. Don't know if is true.

Kramer vs Kramer was like an anomaly in an era where sci-fi, adventure, superheroes,, and war movies play a dominant part in movie business. A casual ignorant person will ask how can a simple and outdated-theme movie about divorced parents and fight for their kid can won against all those modern, imaginative, and advanced movies and stand to be counted in an era of movies like Jaws, Star Wars, The Deer Hunter, Apocalypse Now, Superman, E.T. The Extra Terrestrial, Heaven can Wait, and Rocky ?

Johnny Carson was given faulty information to read in his intro. Goldie Hawn did not win an Oscar for her film debut. She had appeared two years prior to CACTUS FLOWER in a Disney feature titled THE ONE AND ONLY GENUINE ORIGINAL FAMILY BAND, starring Walter Brennan and ... Kurt Russell!
