SokuSenpai That is propably intended by Togashi. He is a masterpiece in writing because he can create brilliant characters even without super tragical backstory‘s. That also doesn’t!t mean that he can‘t write backstory‘s, I mean watch at Gyro in the Chimera Ant Arc. We have only seen his flashback and habe some little infos, but his potential is still incredible. Togashi Is a Master in writing!

    • @sulikiller2-ls2ef

Suleymen Amanzholtegi ye he‘s very charismatic and extremely scary. He contrasts our sometimes childish and naive, but good hearted and talented MC’s Gon & Killua in a way as he‘s a calculating and charismatic psychopath with high potential. As you can see from my words I think Togashi did an amazing job with a strong characterization even though he‘s up to now not the pinnacle of antagonists, the set up which Togashi made with Tserriednich is extremely good and if Togashi is able to give him high impact on the story and executed more of Tserriednich‘s scarry personality then he‘d easy could get into my top 3 antagonists ^^

Chrollo is my favourite villain in HunterxHunter. I like him mostly because there are aspects of his personality that I admire but also because I can relate.
I wouldn't rule it out but I never saw Chrollo as a sociopath. Instead, he strikes me as someone who doesn't have a very well-developed emotional function; he processes the world through logic and treats emotion as secondary, hence he doesn't really react emotionally in situations but only when he has the space to do so without any judgement. He probably doesn't have very good control over his emotions so he sweeps them under the carpet. This makes him hard to read since emotions don't directly equate to a reaction for him but I suspect he is quite okay with this.
He's had one or two moments where emotions have come up; especially where those emotions didn't serve any purpose, so I do believe he feels them; a sociopath wouldn't feign emotion where it didn't serve a purpose. He just doesn't trust emotions quite as much as he trusts his logic. He feels emotions, he's just taught himself not to be imprisoned by them. His logical function is so strong that he is able to do things that may even be at odds with his own emotions.
As for his charisma as a leader, I believe he actually cares for the Troupe and the reason why he comes across as so charismatic a person is because he genuinely treats the Troupe like his family. Art of War mentions how much easier it is to get your soldiers to give their lives to your cause if they are treated like family so that would explain why they like him so much; I don't believe he is feigning affection for them at all; they have this clique/cult they've developed where they believe themselves to be unique and special compared to the rest of the world.
That said, the original members of the Troupe are brought together by a common-purpose brought on by a difficult upbringing in a place that felt neglected by the world; that's why they actually took time to go "save it" when the Ants tried to take it over. It looked ironic that people who cause terror in other parts of the world would go out to go save their own home; I believe that this shows how much their common upbringing means to them and how much it connects them.
The rest of the world is their antagonist and, as long as they have each other, they are emboldened to take from the world that neglected their home. The Troupe is the only thing that matters and actions are taken to benefit the Troupe and its members.

I think he is trying to fell things as he said.
But he just can't, and that's why he get sad, he cannot fell sorrow for his dead "friend" where even the his friend can fell.
I just wish they were an event that would make him change his mind and break through that mental sheel, maybe by finding the redemption via Kurapikas action.
Instead of killing, he could understand what he lived (we know they all came from Meteor City so they were alone) and make a real, Kurapika would probably understand that, because he isn't that much of an hater, he will somehow understand that they are still human and that they haven't done that for pure pleasure.
Maybe i'm going too far about it, but i think it could be viable.

Let me tell you why, chrollo level sociopaths can nvr feel 'LOVE' or the warmth or affection of frndship that normal people can do but at the same time since they are extremely manipulative and can read people so well, they are constantly surrounded by likeable, extremely loyal companions who can literally be as loyal as a dog for them and there lies the tradegy people like him(chrollo) is constantly surrounded by extremely loyal, likeable companions yet he cannot feel that warmth that affection fr them no matter how much nice he is to them,no matter how much he supports them,no natter what he does or tries he is doomed to live an entire life surrounded by loyalty and warmth,an iota of which he will not feel thus spend an entire lifetime pretending that he also 'FEELS' fr them
So upon the loss of any such loyal likeable friend a heart shattering realisation strikes them,a realisation something like 'This guy done everything fr me when he was alive, but I nvr genuinely loved him or cared about his feelings, all I did was just pretend,am nothng less than a sinner who just uses ppl and he is gone forever will not have any chance to even apologize'
So stuck by the guilt of manipulation and the grief of loss sociopaths like chrollo often feel the grief of loss way more than a normal person, simply put they feel fr you way more once you are dead than when you were alive
      Hope my explanation helped 🙂

I don't feel like Chrollo is a sociopath, I think he has feelings, but is super dedicated to his belief in the spider as an entity. He loves his "family", but understands that the spider as an entity can never really die so long as the idea of it remains. Yes, his family matters, but the idea of the spider is his anchor in life. Chrollo is very confident and sure of his beliefs, and they're what keep him going through life and death situations. He doesn't have to fear death because his life doesn't matter, so long as the spider continues, and it's easiest for him to accept when it's his life on the line (which is why he wanted the rest of the troupe to let Kurapika take him). You kill one of his boys though? Yes, spider goes on, but not before some good ol murderin!

One of the most complex characters in anime. Chrollo is a leader of a criminal organization in which he steers with no particular personal purpose. He's very composed, very much cold and emotionless, he never invests emotions in business, but when one of his friends dies he could not hold his tears, such as in this scene! It's important to note in this scene that he cried with a straight face, indicating that although he has a cold demeanor, he could not suppress his agony. Chrollo is very strong, arguably one of the strongest in the anime, he is a merciless crime mastermind yet he's so calm and always wearing a smile. To summarize, Chrollo is an anti-social who steers in life vaguely towards no marked direction, he's suffering from a crisis of identity and his criminal endeavors are his way of finding himself.

Specialists being sociopaths is just an empirically untrue claim. You seem to believe there've only been 2 specialists shown in the anime, when in reality we've seen 9. And few can be even considered for sociopathy.
When Kurapika turns speclialist he doesn't become a sociopath. He actively voiced his repulsion when torturing Uvogin. His empathy is still there. He simply becomes enraged, with his emotions going out of control. This is not a sociopath but a guy with anger issues.
It's difficult to argue if Chrollo even is a sociopath. Selective empathy is also a trait shared by Gon. And there is a general amorality in the series alltogether.
If you look at the list of speacialists you can't even refer to a trend of sociopathy.

If you've read the manga you would know that chrollo is actually mourning the deaths of his friends and is very sad. This video was great and I enjoyed it but it doesn't do chrollo any justice. At first glance sure he looks like he has no emotions but this character is far more deeper.

    • @jennadurbin3538

I believe that Chrollo only cares for the phantom troupe because it defines who he is. He mourns the lose of a peice of himself. I doubt he actually cares for them as a normal person, considering he only sees them a couple times a year. As feitan said, the last time they were all together was three years before the York New arc.

    • @gameronna8600
      @gameronna8600 5 ปีที่แล้ว +25

Actually, I have an extremely different interpretation of Chrollo's mental state than the one given. These are based off my memory so it may have inaccuracies, nevertheless I would like to voice my opinion. I believe that he truly cared about the death of the phantom troupe members. The part you got wrong was probably the sociopath part which leads to a completely different analysis (perhaps due to outside influences). You mentioned that unlike Light etc he does not have a goal. However, he most probably has a goal which caused the creation of such a lifestyle. Phantom troupe's origin from meteor city and the phrase that the troupe uses after their heists is an indication of their modus operandi. (Feitan once said " We are bandits, we take what we want". ) Following that, there was a short scene in the anime where we see young Chrollo playing with other children, chasing after something. This short scene reflects longing and his endless pursuit for a quality he had lost in the past where he was actually seen wearing a smile. The reason why you view him as a sociopath may also stem from the fact that his emotions are typically masked. This may be from his prolonged unattachment with sympathizing due to the lifestyle he chose. After all, he was able to brutally kill the entire Red Eyed Clan for their eyes. His lack of empathy and ability to kill mercilessly may have been from his stay in meteor city, where shit happens. Growing up from such environment would have made anyone cold. Thus, being stoic and being able to mask his emotions does not represent that he was truly "empty" or that he was crying because of the concept of sadness he produced. What I saw was sadness from loss. After all, a killer such as him, who rarely shows emotions, was able to shed a tear for his comrade. Another point I would like to mention, is that Chrollo loved reading. This was probably his resort to learn about the world and climb up than to fill his "emptyness". He was a child from Meteor city, yet he loves wearing suits and he was able to understand high society life. In the latest manga arc he was mentioned by the other wealthy powers as a nouveau riche but they did not understand why Chrollo lived differently via not flaunting his wealth. This is another insight to Chrollo's motive where he steals because for a reason other than wealth. This establishes that Chrollo have a belief that drives him to commit such deeds and he does not really care for childish acts by the affluent. Lastly, his organization and his preparation for his death stems from his dedication to the unexplained goal he came up with, and not because he is "empty". I suspect that his goal has always been personal liberty, the freedom to do whatever he wants. The freedom to even transcend time, which he created the spiders so that his will lives on. Therefore Chrollo as a man, cares about his concluded motive in his life the most, and that includes being able to protect his family. His limbs. His will.

I think the analysis of chrollo crying can also be interpreted in another way. I agree that even though chrollo was crying he wasn’t actually sad, however I don’t think he made himself cry to try and feel sorrow. I think chrollos body cried on its own, it wasn’t on his command and he didn’t necessarily want to cry, his body instinctively cried on its even though I agree he wasn’t actually sad. I think Chrollo crying is similar to how people experience adrenaline rushes, some process, something within chrollo wanted to cry, however the blank expression on his face is the same sort of face many people will make in deep thought, chrollo is crying because it is the natural reaction for someone in that exact situation but chrollo is trying to psychologically understand himself. He’s thinking: what am I experiencing right now, why is there a tear rolling down my face, I don’t feel sad but for some reason I am acting as if I were. He feels nothing as he cried but it is still a sincere tear. The reason why chrollo, meruem, hisoka and gon are so interesting is because of their unique feelings and unique senses of justice. For example hisokas sense of justice is based around a truly anarchist society, a world truly built around the ideal of survival of the fittest, he takes no pity or interest on those who are weak and have no potential, he purely wants to test himself. Chrollo struggles with a sense of justice, however it is there, when he gets kidnapped he truly believes that the rest of the troupe will not try to save him, and when the troupe puts themselves in the risky situation to save him you can see him totally confused and dumbfounded, in his mind the spider must live on, even if he falls the spider remains, he expects all members to follow the guidelines and rules of the troop, which is to always do what is best for the group, not an individual, and so when they risk themselves with a rescue plan he clearly begins to deeply ponder about why and whether the rules of the troupe are as fair as they’re supposed to be. Now when chrollo was asked by gon “how can you kill people who have nothing to do with you” he responded by saying he’ll know the answer to that when he knows himself. This reminded me of Holden caulified or whatever from the Catcher and the Rye, throughout the book Holden comes to this realization that not every action needs justification, people always find themselves trying to answer the same question as chrollo right here, why am I doing this, what justifies my actions, what justifies me being born rich, and Chrollo realizes in this moment that he has no justification what so ever. He questions a lot of things about himself, for example chrollo gets no pleasure from it all so why does he kill people, to what end is the task that harms others. And as the leader of the troupe he is the only one who needs to answer these questions. What confuses people about chrollo and why it is easy to label a psychopath is because of the fact that he seems to feel no remorse about killing people, however that isn’t totally true. The justification for killing people was never necessary for chrollo because he never developed the idea himself which makes it seem like he has no value for human life, however after gon asks him he realizes that he has no reason and he undergoes a deep change and realizes that killing people for no reason isn’t a good thing to do, chrollos total inability ever question the motives for killing people is what makes him a sociopath, but once those motives are questioned he actually undergoes an enlightenment of some sorts and learns that killing random people isn’t the greatest thing to do. I know it seems childish to claim he didn’t know the basics of kill=bad and steal=bad, I mean he’s a grown man and most of us learn that kill=bad when we are children, but in reality it makes sense for a sociopath and especially an extreme case like chrollo to not learn this because of a naturally developed self-centeredness, and the absolute inability to question his own actions lead to him needing others to guide him to any morally correct answer. And on what you said about all specialists being sociopaths, yes I totally agree with you. However what you said about kurapika only being able to become a specialist because he can become a sociopath is incorrect, because that would imply that anyone who can use nen can become a specialist if they become a an absolute sociopath, and that is incorrect. If you analyze the traits hisoka looks for when determining someone’s nen-type, you would discover that all of those traits are traits compatible with both psyochopaths or sociopaths. Then if you think about many of the nen users in the story, stout realize that all them have at least one circumstance where they demonstrate some clearly questionable morals or lack there of. I believe that when pushed correctly every nen user is capable of becoming a full fledged sociopath or psyochopath that a specialist is only awakened I think the analysis of chrollo crying can also be interpreted in another way. 10/10 Chrollo is a Psychopath. It is harder for sociopaths for fit into society, they stand out and lack thorough planning. While Chrollo is a master manipulator, able to blend into society, mimic human emotions, and ooze charisma. Psychopaths tend to plan their crimes very thoroughly and usually never get caught. Sociopaths are much more sloppy and impulsive. I would say Hisoka is a sociopath while Chrollo is very much a Psychopath.

I actually think that Chrollo is a psychopath rather than a sociopath. The difference between a Sociopath and a Psychopath is that sociopathic tendencies are learned emotional defense mechanisms (usually learned through an abusive upbringing, or a survivalist upbringing), whereas psychopathic tendencies are genetic anomalies, meaning psychopaths are born without the ability to regulate, understand, or genuinely express emotions (though they can learn to mimic certain emotions if they think it is of benefit to them.)
Chrollo may be classified as a sociopath because of his survivalist view of the world (survival of the fittest) and his upbringing. Though, by what is shown in the anime series, he seems to fit the psychopathic classification more, especially if he was just mimicking emotions (crying) when he learned that Uvo died rather than feeling actual remorse. I think he he is a psychopath because: he has a strange charismatic personality that draws people who are willing to give up everything for him (think cult leaders), he is incredibly intelligent/analytical thinking/logical, he doesn't care about the consequences of his actions (even when it comes to murder/death of an ally), he is unaffected when faced with something that should be terrifying (i.e. death), he has no remorse or empathy (nor does he expect mercy from his enemies), he doesn't hesitate to exploit another person's weakness or take their power/strength through manipulation, he tries to protect/preserve himself (ex. Chrollo doesn't use Nen because he knows he will die if he does), and, there is a clear disconnect with his emotions. Psychopaths can pass polygraph tests because they do not feel guilt, remorse, or pain when hurting others or committing a crime. That may be why Melody thinks that Chrollo is telling the truth when he says that his life doesn't matter. He could be telling the truth, or he could also be lying to preserve his life.
If anything, Chrollo is probably the most relatable psychopath in anime. Psychopathy can be treated if caught early, however, the person can never truly feel guilt, empathy or remorse for their actions (i.e. they can't be cured.) Treated psychopaths can only learn how to act a particular way when presented with a specific situation. Though, they will still think that caring for others is of no benefit to them. Psychopaths do not generally have constant bloodlust, but, they may have a tendency for, or history of, violence or killing (animals) in response to trying to understand why they cannot feel emotions, or, to express their frustration/anger if they perceive a lack in their circumstance/sense of self. Bottom line: Sociopaths are made (through poor/lacking environments and upbringing), whereas Psychopaths are born (genetically lacking in empathy/emotions.)

      Many dont understand Nen.
I mean, many dont even noticed that Double-Conjuring and therefore also doing the same with some other Types is totally possible. 'Adding Steps to make it more difficult to you, so your Nen gets Stronger' is so fundamental throughout the Art of Nen,
it’s clear it’s possible to conjure a Dog that conjures Gold and poops it out.
We would know this ust be a Thing even if we hadnt literally multiple releavant Characters do it on-screen again and again. Namely Kite and Welfin, who both double-conjure. Oh, and fun-fact: That dog-example i made? That’s from Togashi and we know it’s possible cause Greed Island Cards summon such.

If Chrollo wants to understand emotions because he doesn't experience them wouldn't that make him a psychopath not a sociopath? My understanding is that sociopath's learn to suppress their empathy from an early stage in their development where as psychopath's never have empathy to begin with.

    • @TheNeoLoneWolf
      @TheNeoLoneWolf 5 ปีที่แล้ว

I think this would also suggest another sad aspect of Chrollo's story as those who are born a nen specalist can not attain full affinty with the other 5 nen types (enhancer, emitter, etc.). whereas those who unlock specialization later on still retain their their affinity to their nen type suggesting that those born a specialist are lacking a certain inner quality.

Actually, I have an extremely different interpretation of Chrollo's mental state. His limbs. His will.

I also have a huge problem with adapting my personality to the people I’m around, so now I don’t really have a fixed identity. So chrollo, who’s whole power is to imitate others, is scary relatable. I also LOVE the editing

When first introduced I didn’t really see chrollo as anything more than a smooth talking guy who leads a group of bandits. But after catching up on the manga and seeing these kinds of videos, I realized the complexity his character. He’s a play on nihilism and fatalism. It’s just not spoonfed to you. You have to really consider the nature of meteor city and how the spiders all hail from there. Chrollo’s formation of the troupe and his theft of nen abilities are ways of him trying to find identity.

This is super late, like, CRAZY late, but after having watched Kurapika carefully while his eyes are red, I don't think this is the case at all. Kurapika is incredibly emotional and there's still a shadow of his usual earnest morality while his eyes are red. He is furious, but during his fight with Uvo, where his eyes are red the whole while, he's still trying to understand the Phantom Troupe, to give them some chance to show them their humanity. He very easily could have defeated and killed/begun his interogation immediately, but instead he keeps prolonging things, asking him how he feels and why he does what he does. Kurapika is still repulsed by what he's doing, he's still fundamentally the same person. Furthmore their is Neon, who despite being disconnected from reality, is genuinely hurt by her maid's suffering. Furthermore Pitou is a Specialist, and her failing as the "perfect royal guard" is that she develops empathy.
No. I think that the key here is that Conjurers and Manipulators have the highest chance to become specialists later is our major clue here. If we assume that the Nen categories are organized in terms of Purity vs. Complexity, then I think even the spectrum of how the types are arranged makes perfect sense. We've seen people who qualify as Sociopaths in various categories, not all of them have been specialists, but every single person who has Specialist abilities is far more complex, or is somehow caught in a moral contradiction, then they might otherwise appear.
