There are two of me singing 😂 And also because you asked for a video, I would recommend my Aberdeen (Avi Kaplan) Cover. It is a live performance where I sing and play guitar. Hope you like it!

You should really check out a video by the amazing "TheOktavismChannel" with the title: "The Power Of The Russian Oktavist"...now imagine all of these low notes, but live without microphones and still the same power, clarity and projection. To answer your question at 3:24, subharmonics have a "ringing" to them, especially above G#1 due to their unusually rich harmonic content a full octave above the fundamental. Below, the ring slowly turns into a "rumble" put the upper harmonics are still very present. BTW, that's why some subs like F#1 typically sound so loud since F#2 is a low note below G#2 (whose sub is thus below G#1) that most bass singer can sing loud.
    Chest notes tend to sound "fuller", warmer because there are way more frequencies filling the gap between the note sung and the resulting sub. Since those upper harmonics tend to decrease smoothly in amplitude as you get further from the fundamental, you don't hear the "ringing".
    Hope this makes sense... ultimately you'll develop a better intuition for subs by hearing the same singer (especially if that singer is you) sing the same note in chest THEN subharmonics and learning to differentiate the two sounds. Thou Yang (the guy at 2:41, 5:10, 12:28 ) has a whole series of subharmonics tutorials with auxiliary exercises and science-based explanations here: th-cam.com/video/oJfP1471Rgg/w-d-xo.html

    Ok, I might be bias, but to me the best is Geoff, for his tone, hold and range!
    Dan M. is pretty good, and holds his low a long time! Efe Sayin sounds like he was doing overtones, amazing!
    Surprised not to see Tim Foust or Avi Kaplan here. Maybe they don't do subharmonics?

    • @GeorgeLifterMann
      @GeorgeLifterMann 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Avi and Tim don't do Subharmonics. They use other techniques though, especially Tim, the master of the Growl as many people call him.

    • @alexwalker8440
      @alexwalker8440 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I know Tim can go subterranean low (and also pretty high!), that's why I wondered about him not being listed. But you explained it, thanks!

    • @GeorgeLifterMann
      @GeorgeLifterMann 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@alexwalker8440 No problem man, personally though i think that Ken Turner is one of the masters in Subharmonics, he just uses them like J.D Sumner would use his regular voice to reach the range of E1-C1. Absolute beast, and he is 86 years old i believe! David Khan is a close second certainly, his live C1 (it's on his channel) from the Elvis concert is incredible. But Thou Yang and David Larson are the current kings in extended techniques like that, they are basically on a pedestal for us in the Bass Community :)

    Here's the difference between Tomi's subharmonic A1 and his chest A1. The subharmonic A1 sounds like there are 2 notes stacked on top of each other: a great A ( an A2 ) on top, and a contra A ( an A1 ) on the bottom. With the chest A1, you notice there is only one note, an A1. Also another thing to note, compared to the subharmonic low A, you can hear the note literally drop when he switches to chest, actually almost feel it drop. There's your answer to how they're different.

    13:22 Thats what subharmonics is, to reach the first subharmonic you sing the octave above in chest voice (here it would be the D2 you here him go up to), but subharmonics involves adding in some neck tension/fry that produces a strong note 1 octave down (the D1 here). This is a very simplified explanation but thats the basics of how this is different to simply hitting notes using chest or vocal fry

      Very interesting

  • @LaudeMusic
    @LaudeMusic 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I am not a bass singer, but a chest note is when you sing in your range where you'd normally sing and subharmonic is when you relax your voice to go an octave below, hope this answered the question :)

  • @maloxi1472

    I love how at the end we almost only see Efe Sayin (and sometimes Ken Turner) singing E1, D1, C#1, C1, B0 and the other singers get rarer and rarer as we get closer to B0 😄

  • @wwsciffsww3748
    @wwsciffsww3748 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think you are right that at 13:20 he is doing the D2 and D1 separately and editing them on top of each other, however it is possible with subharmonics to sing both at the same time! It's because subharmonics are done by singing an octave above and then doing a fry in a specific way to drop it down, so if you do the fry lightly it can sound like both at once. It's similar to overtones but going lower instead of higher. Also at 4:37 David is doing whats called the 2nd subharmonic, notice how he jumps down an octave and does the regular subharmonic but then he jumps down again without a pause. He has videos on his channel explaining whats going on and how to do it. Would definitely recommend watching his videos on growl and other techniques as well!

    QofyReacts you need to learn subharmonics man, but it depends on you and your range ofcourse because it can hurt your vocal cords due to the placement being low but it is easy to learn, for me, I do watch Geoff's vid about subharmonics and his other video too. Really helpful but just remember to not strain the vocal cords and maintain good health also. Subharmonic note is the octave below the original like singing A2 down to A1, that's subharmonic while the vocal fry or chest fry, a thick or heavy note with popping sound I think but with consistency. Most subharmonic are drop notes but vocal fry is made by singing lower or like climbing down.
