    I'm a bit older and remember my first power tools coming with detailed exploded diagrams and a spare parts list. The assumptions was to make repairs as user friendly as possible. Now, with the litigious nature of the USA, I think manufacturers don't want that. But from drills to table saws to planers to surfacers, I service and maintain my own tools. Like sharpening knives and cutting tools, it's one integral aspect of tool ownership.

    • @rippermcguinn
      @rippermcguinn 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I volunteer at a local tool library (just like it sounds - we lend tools instead of books), where among our happy gang we have Tool Doctors who diagnose and repair tools. The concept of "fixability" is integral to sustainability and flies in the face of planned obsolescence, although manufacturers try hard by employing technologies like ultrasonic welding to force us to "break it to fix it".

    • @tiacho2893
      @tiacho2893 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@rippermcguinn Good on you and thank you for volunteering. Myself and my sister volunteer with Habitat for Humanity when we can.
      Like cell phones, advancements and innovations become a thinly veiled excuse to replace working cell phones. And the slow drip of "improvements" mean there is a new phone almost every year.
      Yeah, the welded cases might improve strength but any repair must start with a destructive step. I wonder about the brands that offer factory refurbished tools and whether those models/brands have repairability built into the design. The most annoying thing I have come across recently is that every screw is visible except one or two that are needlessly covered by stickers. You think it's just a stubborn locating tab until you hear something break. Now I remove all obvious sticker first.

      I keep a Rhodia notebook because I really like the paper for writing with wet ink. For sketching, I use a Muji dot notebook in A5. They don't have a lot of pages so you can have a few set for different projects. All of them together only add up to about 20 mm.

    This leatherman looks really nice! I absolutely agree about using tools and other things for as long as possible. I still regularly use my 18 year old Leatherman Super Tool (the first version) and everything still works except the blade locking mechanism that I broke when using the knife as an axe. I'm also using my maker knife, even if it's the silver anodized version.

    It's not exactly what you want, but you might look into bullet journaling. It's a method of using a journal where you create a contents and can write down the pages you want to keep track of so they are easy to find again. It's kind of a way to organize things without actually moving anything.

    You could use notebooks with prepunched wholes and then include rings to bind them (so ähnlich wie in nem Aktenordner). Then everyone can prioritise in whatever order they want; it's not a bunch of loose notes and you could even have different collections for different things.

    open knife on the outside? definitively not an carry knife, unless you want to put it into an compartment. this is why I replaced my Leatherman with an swiss knife after the last weapon law change...

    • @user-rq2sy5mp8n
      @user-rq2sy5mp8n 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, one is still allowed to carry it accessibly should e.g. profession make it necessary to carry such a tool. It’s a strong limitation, but for me the easy accessibility of the knife exceeds the limitations. I wouldnt carry anything like that openly anyway unless I need it as a tool, but that’s personal preference 😊 - also, the open knife is not the issue, it’s the fact that it’s self-locking and can be opened with one hand. People have removed the one-hand accessibility to make it more compliant, but… ah well.

    Adam Savage lost his Charge I believe. So he claims his favorite model is the Leatherman Wave. Easier to replace if it gets lost or confiscated according to him. The Wave has nearly the same functions. Half the price. G10 is nice but I prefer stainless steel. Petroleum products and wonky schmoo won't do much to stainless. Same with heat exposure. I am really wondering why that Tom Sachs charge isn't made out of Micarta. That would make it even cooler in my opinion. Not that I don't like the white.

      G10 is a specific type of fiberglass though so both are true.

    Okay - I learned that good old Swiss army knife isn't any longer good enough for NASA's aeronauts.
