To space your shapes evenly around 360 degrees you need to watch at about the 1 minute mark when the registration mark is being created. If you hold the alt key down as you are creating the registration mark the rotate window should open. Type in any angle (eg. 30 degrees to make 12 shapes) and select copy. This will create an extra shape at the correct angle. Then press Control+D to generate the required number of shapes.
You can ALT (Option) Click when you are setting your center point and a dialogue bow will pop up giving you options to set what angle you would like to rotate it. If you do factors of 360 they will be evenly spaced. This will give you a more precise outcome.
+Devin Chaves Hey thanks Devin :) When I enter 360/10 for example, it just moves the first shape and doesn't create the 10 shape copies spanning 360 degrees - I may be doing something wrong?
For a better way to create this effect: 1) Create a vertical line or shape, 2) With it selected, Go into Effect > Distort and Transform > Transform... 3) At the Bottom-Left of this window, there is a little box with 9 squares that lets you choose your objects center of gravity. (What your transformations will rotate around) 4)(With the preview box checked) Change the angle you want your shape to rotate 5) Increase the amount of copies for your desired effect 6) Alter the Scale or Move to your preference Voila! :)
Effect is slightly different. With the video plus St Laurence College tip there is a circle created in the center, but with Campbell's tip it is a solid center. Both useful and awesome tips! :)
@@FreetheTongue Thanks for the positivity!, you can also create a circle in the center with my method if you adjust the horizontal and vertical sliders while in the dialog box, let me know if it works for you :)
You can use (R) rotation and press alt at the centre cross hair. Then you can input the exact angle for example (360/10= 36degrees) and it will do the exact placement for you. Hope it helps.
Thanks for making this. Found it a bit tricky to get the box up at first, but managed it by making sure to click with alt held rather than just releasing the left click as you would with a click and drag.
Maybe it's a bit too late but have you tried this? : select the object, double click on the rotation tool, rotation window will open, then you can set exactly the degrees in the angle, let's say 30°, then press the copy button, then you can make the ctrl+D trick all the way, hope you could have some use, have a good day, love your work man!
looks great but can you make one a many pronged star bubble?not a 3 or 5 pt. star but spiked allaround circle&would there be an easier way to do this?-thanks!
More precise way as requested in video: alt+click to the desired point when setting the registration mark. this will open the rotate window where you can enter exact degrees (eg 20°). then hit copy in the window. After that ctrl+d as you mentioned. perfect spacing!
Make your rules appear on the edges by pressing Ctrl + R. Make a target position for your rotation point by dragging guides from the rules on both axes (x and y). Select the rotation tool from the tool bar. Zoom in close to where your guides intersect and while holding Alt click on that point. A window will open with the option to set the precise angle of your rotation. You can still use the same Ctrl + D to duplicate the last action.
Thank you! Your explanation was the most clear out of the 5 videos I was watching. It was clear and concise and you got to the point. I subscribed! Thank you!
Wow! This video is 8 years ago😮. May I ask is it possible to make it faded. Like every piece of the vertical line is going to be thin. I guess it’s not gradients effect. The vertical line is from to thick to thin😅😅😅
Viewers, if you are finding this video later than 2023, please find a newer video with updated tools info. Adobe has added tools that do this much more effiencely & intuitively.
I need to learn to do rotating, undulating circles and figure-eights for a video. Please recommend computer programs that I could use, or if you have other ideas that may help to do my project, please let me know. Thank you.
hey, I know a better way to do that, cuz 360/20=18, so when u copy the second shape and rotate it at 18 degrees, then Com+D for 18 times, finally u can get 20 shapes. U don't need to fix it again and again, just do a math.
Was going to say the exact same thing. I use this technique for a lesson with my students to create a mandala. Our art curriculum needs to include math (and English, science, technology etc..) Easy way to include math.
I'm pressing Cntrl + D and it's only pasting back and forth, it's not making a circle rather pasting in the same position. This is only happening on the rotation. If I do this on a streaight line, it works.
Another trick is you can put a guide and center your shape on the guide, then when you use the rotation tool it snaps to the guide which is in the middle of the shape.
hi there. I have a question: when I move the center, to rotate a line, and then I open the "Rotate box", the center is going to the center of the line, and not to the center I want :/ Why??
Hey Ana, it might be that specifying the rotation in the rotate box ignores the fact that you've set a new rotation point. Try setting the new rotation point and then dragging and see if this helps? :)
I'm having trouble using this tool/method. My duplicated objects do not stay around the circle....instead, they rotate around a MUCH larger (hidden) circle. I also notice that the rotate/copy dialog box takes a while to display once I ALT+click the center of the circle. Any thoughts?
Press the shift key until the motion is complete. But that's not what you do after this move. I'm just moving an object. There's nothing I skipped. v2018 CC. What could be the problem.
I don't think you can adjust the center point in Adobe XD just yet. However, you could create two lines, space them apart (for the gap in the middle), and then duplicate both and rotate to form a cross. Then repeat that step at 45 degrees and so on, until you get the same shape 👍

This is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for leaving the comment here.
"hold the alt key down as you are creating the registration mark" - that's the key. Thanks!
Exactly what I needed. Thank you so much for sharing this tip. It's a shame Adobe have not made this more intuitive.
Thanks!!!!
Thanks for comment

Hold the alt key when you change the registration and enter 360/n where n equals the desired number of shapes.
+Devin Chaves Hey thanks Devin :) When I enter 360/10 for example, it just moves the first shape and doesn't create the 10 shape copies spanning 360 degrees - I may be doing something wrong?
Just like your tip you'll ctrl+D the rest.
Thanks Devin :).
thanks, Davin! this was the missing link :)
I've come here just for this. Thanks a ton Devin :)
I like how your videos are "quiet". Without noisy music. Just a focus on the content, and a calm voice.

This is a great explanation.
Object - Transform - Rotate (enter degree and click Copy) CTRL-D to duplicate the action all the way around.

any tips on how to rotate at certain angles? whenever I type in an angle in the transform box, it rotates around the center. Not the point I made.
Thanks you hepled me even four years later.
Hello,
i rotated a object randomly, and now i want to rotate that into that's original position,
how i know, what the degree i rotated that object?
You can select the object, and from the Transform panel (top-right) set the rotation back to 0 degrees 👍

Transform does it better you can pick the number of prongs and it calculates it perfectly
This doesn’t work for me. When I use CMD + D it duplicates in the layers menu but it doesn’t form a sphere it just duplicates same place.
How do you ensure your axis of rotation mark is centred? Mine doesn't give me a guide or snap to a centre point
So easy when someone shows you how!
Thank you!
Thank You so much
At first, I center the rotation point then press Alt and click on the center point then the rotation guide pop-up comes. thanks.
THANK YOU

Options
Divide 360 by the number of copies to get an even number
Hit copy
