How To Clean Gold Plated Jewelry

  • Hey everyone!
    Here's a quick and easy way to clean your gold plated jewelry that may have got ruined by perfume..or started to tarnish over the years. I was really sad that my Kate Spade bracelets started getting all these dark marks and it wasn't until after that I realized what it was. Thankfully this restored my jewelry to almost brand new condition. This also works with other gold plated items. I have tried this method on my necklace and seen major results!
    If you have any more questions leave it down below !
    _______________________________________________________________________
    What You'll need
    1 tablespoon of salt
    1 tablespoon of baking soda
    1 cup hot water
    1 dry cloth
    Instructions
    Cover a small bowl with aluminum foil.
    Add salt & baking soda.
    Heat water in the microwave for 2 minutes.
    Add the water to the aluminum foil covered bowl with salt and baking soda.
    Soak jewelry for 10 minutes.
    Remove and rub excess debris/tarnish with a soft cloth.
    Rinse in warm water
    Dry with soft cloth

    Great video. Folks, this works!
    I was selling on poshmark and when I took my Michael Kors pave vermeil gold ring out to sell in its new with tags pouch - I was horrified to see dark purple tarnish all over splotchy, which I cannot sell like that. I tried the easy soap and warm water method. Nada. I said ok google is useless, lets try youtube. Watched this video.
    I got my glass bowl and ingredients together. Lined the bowl as shown, added ingredients, boiled hot clean spring water (distilled water the cleaner less impurities your water the better), added that swirled to totally suspend ingredients into water. Added ring making sure all parts had contact with water. Flipped it once. One minute later clean as new. Didnt have to rub any tarnish off at all. Washed ring in clean water to get ingredients off. It is drying on paper towel now.. ready to go to new home in the mail today. Phew! Saved my sale. Thank you for making this video. It is hard to find ways to clean vermeil silver. You do not want to rub the gold off! Two thumbs up. Please like share subscribe.

    • @LMB925
      @LMB925 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Careful, you can ruin plated jewelry. Try using something very gentle for plated jewelry. Baking soda and water is as harsh as you'd want to go, and that's only if a gentle, soapy cleanser doesn't work first. Always dry it very well when done.

      Thanks ❤️ I did a bit of extra research. This should work but you can also try using vinegar, toothpaste, silver polish but you just want to be very gentle when cleaning it. Will this method also stop gold plated jewelry from turning my skin green?

    • @Sarahhh
      @Sarahhh  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a good question, I’m not 100% sure if your skin will stop turning green but this definitely will keep your jewellery clean. Your jewellery must be copper base hence why the greenness occurs. I believe gold plated silver is always best in my opinion . Maybe to avoid your skin turning green you may have to clean your jewellery more often or if possible some people paint their jewelry with clean nail polish

      Gold vermeil normally shouldn’t tarnish but in the case that it does be VERY gentle when cleaning it. Instead of leaving it in the solution I made in the video, just dip it in and out or rub the solution on it. I can’t stress enough how gentle you have to be though. If you don’t feel comfortable doing it yourself definitely take it to a jewelry shop where they can hopefully clean it for you.

You can also try this method but that should be solid gold if im not mistaken ?! it should work the same. I say check with a jeweller first ! :) all the best

      Depends on the type of jewelry it is, was it real silver or gold plated? If so it should , I have gone to the beach or swam in my pool with silver jewelry. I had no trouble cleaning them.

    Will these work for 18k authentic gold jewelries?

    • @Sarahhh
      @Sarahhh  ปีที่แล้ว

      It definitely should work on 18k gold as well. If you want to use different methods that also work I'd recommend the tooth paste method or dawn soap 🧼. I honestly havent had any issues ever using this but I always say for those who are a bit hesitant try a small patch test or of course go to a professional 😊 wishing you all the best!

    Is foil paper necessary?

    • @Sarahhh

      Yes, they create a chemical reaction known as ion exchange. However if you want to clean your jewelry without it this method could still work might take longer or you’ll have to try another way if you don’t notice the same results.

      @@handmadebymalika okay fair enough, the warm water should make it dissolve right away. To be safe make sure the baking soda is crushed up as fine powder. Not in clumps. Simply use a folk or something to stir it up with the salt. Hopefully once the warm/hot water is added it will work. Even if the mixture doesn’t dissolve 100% but is just goopy thats fine.
