    It is amazing how nicely this coaster runs. Knoebels takes such great care of their rides, they pretty much set the standard for maintenance on woodies!

      Indeed. Originally this was the San Antonio Rocket and it was moved to Knoebel's when Playland Park closed. The thing was that prior to Knoebel's getting a hold of it, I never heard of it. But Knoebel's worked their magic on this old gem and really brought it to life in what it can really do. I think they not only matched, but surpassed the original design of the coaster. While it may not look like the biggest or baddest woodie out there, it certainly is one that has the most airtime. To this day, I have not come across another coaster in this size that has more airtime. It is also one of the smoothest older coaster I have been on. Oh! the best rides on it are right after it rains!

      @@rexroche453 Probably. When it comes to classic American amusement parks, this one tops my list. They show a love for older rides that is unmatched. The whole park experience screams classic Americana. But the rides and structures in the park, while antique, look far from antiquated. In fact most of the vintage old rides in the park look brand new. I even ended up enjoying my experience in this park more than Kennywood, which is a larger and more well known for being a classic American amusement park as they have three classic wooden coasters that run well, yet I prefer the Knoebel's Phoenix and Twister coasters over the coasters at Kennywood. That is overall as the Kennywood wooden coasters do have their spotlight moments as well and are certainly worth riding.

      @@jukingeo Yup, I'm familiar with the history of the coaster. If I remember correctly, at least one of the Knoebel family members rode it when it was at Playland and thought it was fantastic so that was one of the reasons they bought it back in 1985. I also remember reading that this was the only ride left in the park for some time before Knoebels bought it, the flat rides and everything else were taken out very soon after the closure. I'm pretty sure they rebuilt it to the design that it was originally but they had no blueprints to go off of so they numbered every board of the track and supports in order to put it back together correctly. I can't imagine what a job that was!
      I haven't ridden the Phoenix after the rain in years but I do remember it being insane haha. It gives a solid night ride too IMO but Twister is definitely the night ride king at Knoebels.
      I totally agree that there isn't another coaster of this size that provides the airtime and overall thrill that Phoenix does. Heck I've ridden roller coasters that are more than twice the size of it that I haven't enjoyed as much! I personally don't rank it my #1 woodie (that ranking goes to The Voyage at Holiday World), but it's definitely top five.

    • @jukingeo
      @jukingeo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mhtube01 I have not heard of the coaster until it came to Knoebel's. So I had nothing on how it rode at Playland. What I do know is that the coaster is a Herbert Schmeck designed coaster and he is noted for a good many good coaster designs including the Idora Wildcat. Of course when I mentioned Knoebel's "Working their magic", I can assure you that they had to retrack the coaster when they put it back up. That is no easy task to get right, but whatever they did to that ride, it runs fantastic. It is one of the smoothest older wooden coasters I have been on.
      Yes, the time I went, it rained out and I was surprised that they were running the coasters almost immediately after. I was surprised at the speed increase on the Phoenix. It ran much faster to the point where you were even thrown in the turns...a trait I normally associate with the Coney Island Cyclone.
      In terms of a couple of 'bucket list' woodies that I still want to ride, Shivering Timbers was long on my list, but I have heard that it has become quite rough lately. 2006 saw the opening of two woodies that I saw as superior to Shivering Timbers and you mentioned one of them...The Voyage. Definitely! The other coaster that opened that year that I want to ride is El Toro. Both coasters are on top 10 wooden coaster lists for many years now. The Beast is another one that is on that list and it has been on that list since it opened. It is just very far from me as well as The Voyage. However, I am not far from Six Flags Great Adventure and I been there a couple times already, so more than likely of those three, El Toro will probably be up first!

    The greatest memory I have is one year during Hallo-Fun when the operators didn't even engage the brakes at the station and sent us through on a second run because they saw how much fun we were having. We were halfway up the lift hill before the chain caught up to us and I heard one of the operators say "Uh.... they were going kind of fast!"

    This is the most fun coaster ever as far as dips and leaps with air time! So funny that years ago, coasters like this, like the wildcat at Bertrand's Island in NJ, didn't have lap bars. You just held on to the bar in front of you for dear life! :D

  • @jake19673
    @jake19673 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    It’s been a few years since I rode Phoenix, and after going to Knoebels yesterday this has to be one of the scariest rides I’ve been on (along with Skyrush at Hersheypark and El Toro at Six Flags GA) solely because the restraint sits about a foot above your body, and you can quite literally fly out of the train with the amount of airtime you get. That’s what makes it so scary. Definitely recommend the front row, this is one of my favorite wooden coasters out there!

    Great wooden coaster, but having ridden both this and The Voyage at Holiday World, this coaster doesn't come close to The Voyage. I am surprised it won 1st place. I would put Voyage 1st, then this ride between 2nd and 5th.

    the hills look kind of small. do you actually get air time on those?

    • @mhtube01
      @mhtube01 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes, the trains on this coaster use old school buzz bars that stretch across both seats and there are no seat belts, resulting in amazing air time. You go over the hills with plenty of speed so you fly out of your seat. The front probably gives the most air time, but I have to say the back is my favorite!

      Cindy Kitty Take a trip to Knoebels and ride it! Even if the park isnt that close to you, it's worth the trip. The prices are unbeatable, the food is great, and they have plenty of other great roller coasters and flat rides! I've been going there since I was an infant and even though I've been to bigger parks over the years, there's a charm that this place has that none of them seem to match.
