It is astonishing how the popularity of this music genre and bands like Opeth pales in comparison to today’s new generation of music. I’m talking billions of views on.. Taylor Swift.. but only 2.2M on a masterpiece like Blackwater Park. Truly, popularity does not indicate quality.

I remember the first time I ever heard this song.
The december of 2014, 100 kilometres. Heavy snowfall, flakes the size of a man's fingernails, and fog so thick I couldn't see 2 metres ahead. Pitch black night. I could barely even see where the road was, I even drove off the road a few times. Lucky that I've done that drive a few hundred times before. I was driving at 20 km/h at most. I was alone, and this beast of a song came up on Spotify...
Then when I heard that ungodly heavy riff at 1:15, I turned it up to max volume. I was terrified, excited and in awe at the same time, it took over me. I had a weird feeling, like some kind of a malicious supernatural creature was following my car home, waiting for me to make a mistake and crash, so it can take me out of the car and I'll never be seen again. But I couldn't stop listening. I repeated this song like 10 times. One of the most intense experiences of my life. Opeth is fucking awesome.

I love how delusional Opeth fans are lol, tons of bands have written much better, more memorable, heavier and more technical riffs in drop D. Opeth is 90% boring chord progressions that lead nowhere to bloat a 3-minute song to 12 minutes. Opeth is the metal band for people who dont like metal.

    Confessor
    Of the tragedies in man
Lurking in the core of us all
The last dying call for the everlost
    Brief encounters, bleeding pain
    Lepers coiled ‘neath the trees
    Dying men in bewildered soliloquys
    Perversions bloom round the bend
    Seekers, lost in their quest
Ghost of friends frolic under the waning moon
It is the year of death
    Wielding his instruments
    Stealth sovereign reaper
    Touching us with ease
Infecting the roots in an instant
    Burning crop of disease
    I am just a spectator
    An advocate documenting the loss
    Fluttering with conceit
    This doesn't concern me yet
    Still far from the knell
    Taunting their bereavement
    Mob round the dead
    Point fingers at the details
    Probing vomits for more
    Caught in unbridled suspense
We have all lost it now
    Catching the flakes of dismay
    Born the travesty of man
    Regular pulse midst pandemonium
    You're plucked to the mass
Parched with thirst for the wicked
Sick liaisons raised this monumental mark
The sun sets forever over Blackwater park

Listening to Opeth feels like being in a dark foggy forest during a full moon night. It's either a serene scene or you're being hunted by the nightmares of the forest. This is one of the many scenes that come up in my head when I listen to them. Even if their artwork and merch didn't have this sort of imagery, I'd associate them with this sort of stuff. They sound just like that.

When it comes to the riffs in this song: The riff at 7:44 was always the one for me. Holy, motherf....hell!!! Especially when it gets repeated with that low, neverending growl of Mikael Aekerfeldt. Not being much of a metal fan to be honest (love some of Devin Townsend but I guess the sound tires me out quickly), that beautiful acoustic section is what won me over. Talking about a perfect manifestation in sound of the album cover and the dark month of November...

The opening grunt at 1:58 is the closest thing I've heard to a magic spell. "Power Word: Headbang", after many listens it still gets me every time. It's so masterfully introduced as well. The preceding swelling riffs establish the rhythm, followed by the short acoustic interlude that encourages you to fill the rhythm in subconsciously for a brief period before bringing the crunchy transition riff in and bringing the hammer down.
    Visceral!

I remember the first time I listened to Blackwater Park. It was 2009, and I was on my bike, riding out of Dallas to Austin, Texas for a bike race. It was starting to get dark, and go below freezing. When this song came on, it started snowing very heavily. I didn't stop. No. I kept going. I listened to the entire album and then the entire Opeth discography, while riding my bike in the snow, at night. Opeth is fucking metal.

This is one of the darker tunes in Opeth's catalogue in my opinion. It's not just the musicality and heaviness, it's the breathing space given to it's parts, to build, to grow, to shrink and hover in the distance, building atmosphere. Also, Steven Wilson is a great producer/mixer, in addition to everything else he's king at.

I believe this song contains the best single performance of death metal growls ever committed to tape .
it’s raspy it’s guttural it’s brutal but unlike a lot of the greatest to ever do it every word is perfectly distinct there’s no room for misheard lyrics they are quite clear even my girlfriend who listens to bubblegum pop was able to identify each word of the song and usually you need to have experience listening to those type of vocals to be able to distinguish words.
But it’s the part right before the end
    Mob round the dead
    Point fingers at the details
    Probing vomit for more
    Caught in unbridled suspense
The build and release of tension there as the tempo increases the way he just absolutely shreds his vocal cords on the word “suspense” it’s fucking perfection man….and somehow after what would have been the perfect ending to a song we get the best riff on the album and an even more intense vocal…I wouldn’t be so lacking in understanding about the issue of subjectivity vs objectivity to suggest this is demonstrably the best metal
Song ever written however I have no qualms in saying it’s MY favourite song I get goosebumps every time no matter how much I hear it.
I don’t think they can go back and do this again that’s why they slowly drifted away from metal. I don’t think Id want to hear their attempt at recreating the formula of Blackwater Park they know they could never top it. Anything else would be pale imitation.

For me, I don't mind screaming or growling vocals, but most of the time it loses it's touch if its ALL growling. Only some bands can make a whole song all growling for it to keep the touch. Opeth, The Ocean, Leprous, Gojira, Cattle Decap, Allegaeon, ect. And even if it is all growling/screaming, I do appreciate the talent behind it as it's much easier said than done if you're doing it healthily
