‘Gaslighting’: Victorian government faces backlash over new equality campaign ad

- GT Communications founder Gemma Tognini has hit out at the Victorian government's campaign ‘The Unsaid Says A Lot’.
The 60-second ad depicts multiple scenarios where trans or gender-diverse people are made to feel either excluded or welcomed and accepted.
“It shows a woman in a lift with a trans person and she feels uncomfortable and the woman leaves the lift and the inference of that is, oh you being really mean, your being really mean you need to stay in the lift with that person,” Ms Tognini told Sky News host Chris Kenny.
“The Victorian government should be ashamed of itself because you are gaslighting women to say that your feelings are not valid because you need to make a cohort of people feel okay.
“If a woman is in any situation with any other person of any other iteration and she feels unsafe that is her prerogative.”
So we’re supposed to tell our daughters to ignore their natural instincts? Yeah. What could possibly go wrong.

i emailed the relevant govt. office re these ads, outlining objections and pointing out that MY comfort and safety is equally important. There was a bland reply which didn't address my concerns but re iterated the right of trans people to be safe. The final paragraph: ' We continue to take the issue of women's safety very seriously and understand that the main threat to all women comes overwhelmingly from men, not from trans women '. But umm, aren't trans 'women' men?! Hows that for more gaslighting?

If someone feels unsafe they run or freeze. This is a natural human instinct. A woman left the elevator because she felt unsafe. It matters if someone feels unsafe with a stranger in an confined space. Also, transgender women should be able to compete but in separate categories.
Trusting her uncomfortable feelings is her fault but if something happened it would also be her fault. What was she thinking allowing herself to be alone in an elevator with a strange man?

It's not only women who have every right to make choices such as whether they enter or stay in a lift with someone. Sure, let's challenge our stereotypes and try to avoid being hurtful. It would have been more useful for the advertisements to provide some guidance about recognising warning signs that another person might present a risk; that might help us to avoid unnecessary fear and discrimination regarding safe people whether they are male, female, trans or Martian.
