- Timbers deep in the forest or on sloping or unsafe ground for the tractor can be difficult to recover - unless you have the right tools for the job. I mount the Igland model 2001 skidding winch to the kubota B2601 compact tractor and head into the forest to winch out a couple of big Ash timbers. Let's test it out to see how well it gets the job done here at the cottage in the outdoors! A special thanks to Farmer Equipment Sales for providing the Igland model 2001 skidding winch to test out. Now you did it. One more thing to add to my long list of attachments for my compact tractor. I use a quadrunner with a 12000 winch. Works ok but the quad goes to the log not the way I would like it to work.

That's a great tool ( Skidding winch ! ) My father had one homebuilt and it was great tools and we had a big plastic cone in front of the log and the cable was running through it. So it's was to prevent the lug to dig like it did in you video, you can find them easily with your friend from Farmers Equipment Sales. Cheer GP !!!

Good work, Gord. Agree with you that next time get the butts a little tighter to your skid plate so you can lift the ends of the ground. I have a Frangard 4000 kg on my B3300 (totally over sized but a) it works just fine and b) it’s what was available in the used market. Soon, you will be adding snatch blocks and tree harnessses so you can pull your logs around various trees. Remember to always only pull head on, never from the side. You will find many more uses for that cable and winch, trust me!! Enjoy!

One thing I found was to reel in at lower RPM (not at 540 unless more power is needed) so there is more control and you can stop faster if your log gets hung up etc. Lots of fun is ahead for you as logs that are inaccessible are now just a cable away! GP - Welcome to the wonderful world of skidding winch! I have a 2004 J.D. 35 horse and it came with a Igland 2901 winch. I had no idea how much I would use it. It is an incredible unit. I have pulled fallen hung trees out safely from the canopies of other trees and much more. The biggest save makes me laugh... I too gave been building trails in the woods and got into a mud bog much like quick sand disguised by ground cover. I was able to use the winch and two snatch blocks to pull myself out forward and away from the mess. I have also pulled amazingly heavy logs from impossible spots with the use of the skid plate as you mentioned

Hi Gord. I have a winch like this for 13 years (since i bought my tractor 35 hp case). It is so powerful it can tip your tractor on the side in an instant. It almost happened to me a couple of time... I learned my lesson!!! Also when I winch heavy logs like you have now I winch one at a time to the tractor more as a precaution using the closest “shackle” to the winch so your cable is free to go get the other log.

I’ve had a Farmi winch for over 20 years . On a case international 45 hp. Works great , never had a log it wouldn’t pull . Thanks for sharing.
Good morning David! That's great to hear. I have not seen many of them, but this one works great so far. I have had a couple of times in the mud when the tractor gets pulled back a couple of feet until the skid plate digs in. The down side of skidding logs is that you get dirt and rocks in the bark and unless you clean carefully when you use the chainsaw it will dull the chain. Nice little unit for sure.
Right, but sometimes it’s the only way to recover it... Dave suggested a plastic cone. It might help reducing the amount of dirt being dragged.

@@GPOutdoors I have seen the heavy duty plastic cone for sale at the local saw shop, it is fitted to the front of the log and i think it is meant for guiding the log around obstacles when winching but the trunk still rides in the dirt. The one i saw was more meant for a chainsaw powered winch. The only way to keep the log clean is to de-bark or lift the log with an arch of some sort.
I could have used a toy like that for many years. But did not have the money. Beautiful!

3pt skidding arches have been commercially produced since the 60's. Most producers are from across the pond, because farm tractors are used for more then plowing , planting and harvesting hay over there. I built my own skidding arch 6 years ago, as many other welder fabricators have.
Really enjoyed this video. Thoroughly impressed with that little skidder attachment! Wow!... I don't have any need for one, but man, if I did, I sure look into this setup!👍

Well GP I have to admit I did peek at the bottom of your email to see what that surprise piece of equipment was, but I was nevertheless still surprised when I watched the video by the user-friendly, efficient, and safety-conscious design, as well as the incredible performance of that little unit unit! Hmmm, Igland 2001 has a 4500 lbs capacity. Wallenstein FX40 has a capacity of 4000 lbs and is a little pricier. However, Wallenstein is made in Canada which means no issue for parts or service. One thing I know, I need one of these. Great video!

I giggled every time you said "big ash logs," not gonna lie. Cool attachment, I think a skidding winch of some flavor would be better than slice bread for somebody that does as much firewood as you and Guy.

hello GP we do that with uniforest winch I have three of them and i to could not believe my eyes at first the amount of logs that we were able skid with the winch hooked to a 35 and a 55 hp tractor the 55 we bring out four full trees at times as much as my friend does with if 540 john deere skidder we love them powerful they are cheers
How's she goin'? You'll find that winch will be very helpful when you and Guy are out cutting wood. You can go into the woods and find a tree, drop it and winch it out to the landing so that you have a better work area for dealing with the log. I like when you referred to the logs as 'Big Ash Logs'!! Pretty cheeky GP!!!

Nice video, I’ve been looking at them for years. I went with a gas-powered portable winch (Quebec company) which isn’t near as fast, but it works well with a two person operation. One carries a saw and the winch and pulls logs to a trail, the other skids with the tractor and 3 point

Another little advice from X logger GP use your first two Bells closest to the Tractor they won't ride up the cable and wear on the cable I noticed that in your video otherwise pretty darn nice

I just seen a video where a guy with a logging company had a dealer mount the same winch on a kioti ck 2610 to use in tight places. I believe this product will be a safe alternative. Good video 👍

Man GP, that make me glad I don't run a log skidder anymore :-) Did it for 2 1/2 years, lost 40 pounds and got a lot of firewood. You might want to pull the chokers around so the connection to the cable is at the bottom of the log. This way the log doesn't try to dig in the ground before it spins that way.
Do you know what the price of the winch is, would be nice to have something like that for my firewood cutting.

MD H I was going to suggest the same as you did. I’m no expert by any means but with what little logging I’ve done, the old timers always started with the chain loop choked at the bottom of the log to provide a bit of lift until it spins.
Thanks Gord... Have had my on a Igland designed for my tractor, rated at 40HP. 10,000 LB on the cable. I'm also considering the Fransgard V-5000 @ 11,000 lb. on the 3/8" 165' ft.Cable & rated for my tractor. Danish made, high strength powder coated steel. Best built I've seen yet & their not giving it away... :~)
Once you get comfortable with it, there's no turning back, no more the old way, with perhaps some occasional exceptions...

@@GPOutdoors Gord, one last thing. It appears this small unit does not give you the dozer blade slots to lock in the choker chains. Their purpose is to take the load off the upper pulley/spindle assy when lifting the logs off the ground with the dozer blade itself... This is something you & Guy might be able to weld in place further down the road. In the meantime, it might be wise to NOT go too big when dragging out logs to the landing area until you can work this out... That's just my observation, it's not meant to be gospel!

I couldn't tell in the video but were you using the winch at full engine rpm or was it just at a high idle ? I bet you'll find it'll work fine at lower rpms. In the winch, unless I'm mistaken, the power is developed by the gearing and not by the speed at which it is turned. If you are in a precarious situation, the slower winch speed increases your reaction time in the event a dangerous situation is beginning to occur. (Note Eric Lee's comment). To add to that, if a winch is required for the activity you want to perform, there is likelihood of impending danger in that activity. With my home made winch I always operate it at the bare minimum of engine speed for that reason. In a tough pull, if more input horsepower is required, then I open the throttle a little at a time to match whats required for the pull.
But I gotta tell you GP, you must have a memory like a steel trap to flawlessly repeat the specifications on machinery like this !! You Rock sir !! Thank you for the video and please don't take my comment as critical.

You may notice it drags in much slower than this first time. And I think that makes a lot of sense. I feel better at a slower speed as well. LOL. I like it i have a question if you were skidding and needed to drop the log can you just disengage the winch and drive a bit while still hooked up and than winch the log back to the tractor or do you have to completely disconnect and reset thanks again
Good day Dale. Great question. You can winch it without engaging the brake but it recommends that if you are winching uphill that you click the brake on so the logs don't slide back if you stop. The "brake" is a ratchet style brake so it locks in one direction only so I put it on while winching in so when I stop , the logs don't slide away. The answer to your question is Yes. If I pulled them up, and then decided to move the tractor, then i would just turn the brake handle to the off position and that allows the cable to freewheel so you can drive ahead or pull more cable out etc and then begin winching again when you are ready. It's a shame those ash logs had such huge splits in them. Those would have made some beautiful lumber when milled up into slabs or boards. That winch did a great job pulling them to that sub-compact tractor.

Good day OT! The only reason was because of $$. We really only have need for one in the fall as we don't hit firewood heavily until then. But it was so great to have it while we did. Wallenstein makes awesome equipment and servicing and parts availability is an important part of buying equipment, I think. Good luck OT!

I'm using a JD 3036E (lovely little tractor) which weighs under 2 tons so am thinking a 3 ton winch may be to big and this one just right?

Good day Jim and welcome, all the way from England! My in-laws are from England and we still have many friends there. Got the opportunity to go and we also got to visit Cheltenham. Beautiful place. I don't know a lot about winches but your tractor is much bigger than mine. My tractor has a PTO HP of 19.6 HP and only weighs about 1 ton. This little winch unit is pretty remarkable. It can pull 4,000 lbs and I have learned to slow my tractor RPM down a bit because, boy , it winches those logs in fast at full throttle RPM. I have made several videos with different sizes and lengths of logs and in fact, I have winched in 5 smaller diameter ash hardwood logs at once with it. I have to back my tractor in behind a stump or rock sometimes because the weight of the logs literally pulls my tractor backwards because the tractor is not heavy enough, yet the winch has no problem dragging them and the tractor RPM does not drop or change. I am sorry I can't offer more but perhaps as you watch some of the other videos on my channel, you can see many more examples of the winch working - I think there are 5 or 6 videos after I made this initial one. For reference, almost all logs I skid are hardwood ash or maple so they are pretty heavy. Good luck and thanks for watching and for the comment today. Cheers!

Good morning Mike! We have been missing it, and talking about it a lot over the last couple of weeks. LOL! I did give it back as it was on loan to me for a period of time. We do most of our logging/firewood work starting now until October. If I had bigger needs or produced lots more, than we do, then I definitely would have wanted to keep it. QUESTION: How do you run this or any other implement that requires the rear PTO without sitting on the tractor? If there is a safety bypass aside from a rubber band? I would love to know.
Good morning Steve. Great question - it fooled me for several days after I got the tractor. The manual is wrong. There is a two-way safety switch under the seat. You start the tractor, make sure the parking brake is on and it is in neutral. Hop off and lift the seat up so it sits on the steering wheel. This triggers the safety switch (which tells the tractor that it is ok to run the pto without you in the seat). Then engage the PTO and slowly increase your throttle to 540 as usual. If you drop the seat back down for any reason, the safety switch activates and shuts off the tractor. When you are finished using the pto, then just drop your throttle back down to idle, disengage the pto and then push the seat back down in it's normal position. Have a great week!
@@GPOutdoors Just a quick update to share what I learned. Had a little trouble, but got it working. I have a B2301 with a backhoe and just flipping the seat up does not change the position of the arm to the safety switch. You have to pull the seat release as if you were going to spin it around 180 to use the backhoe. You also have to make sure the mid PTO is not engaged as that will override the safety - I assume the mid PTO is only for the mower deck (which I had mounted at the time) and they don't want that running without someone on the seat no matter what.

I don't have the BH for the tractor but I know that the dealer told me that part of the cost of getting a BH was that the seat and associated hardware had to be swapped out with a different one. And yes, the mid PTO can not be operated without the operator's position to be occupied. I am glad you have it figured out. Have a great week and thanks again!

Good morning Don - there is a two-way switch under the seat. Seated, with the engine idling, put in neutral range, engage the parking brake, then hop off the seat, lift the seat forward so it rests on the steering wheel, then engage the PTO and it should start, then idle up to 540 RPM. when finished, reduce back to idle RPMs, disengage the PTO and put the seat back down. Not sure what year your B2601 is but the directions in the manual were inaccurate. Let me know if it works for you. Cheers!

That rope control looks like a real PIA. to deal with. When not in use it is likely the rope will fall down and tangle in brush and activate some part of the winch ---brake or drum drive, or bend the control arms. If I owned it those levers would be where I could reach them from the tractor seat. I built my own 3pt skidding arch and the 12V winch is controlled with a push button fob. May not be quite as powerful or fast, but much easier to use. I have about $200 invested in the whole thing with a 3500# HF winch, and the arch It is mounted on an older Kubota B2150 with loader and gets used to make 1600 to 2000 cu.ft of firewood each year for our winter heating needs.---------Loren
