    Me and my best friend enjoyed a lot this video and put in some thought and discussion to all these tips. You've a new fan in his face, I couldn't count how many times he actually said "Bravo!" while listening to the two of you a while ago! (I didn't make him, he was genuinely impressed, and I say this while you already know that I myself am a true fan a true supporter) A few of your tips turn out to be quite a great consideration, including for someone not really intended to set off to Germany, because they also apply to countries like ours. And I should definitely FINALLY take more time and commitment to learn already to ride a bike!! (halfway capable by now.. didn't have the chance to do that as a child) Thank you, and never ever ever forget that Your work and investment into what you're doing is, to put it mildly, priceless! 👑👑

    If you bike and take your bike on trains/local transport to explore the country-side, folding bikes (Faltrad) are a good option.
    You don't have to buy a ticket for a folded up bike on public transport in Germany.
    My girlfriend and I have probably saved a several thousand euros over the last 10 years years.
    Plus folding bikes are smaller and lighter, making them easier to bring into your flat or cellar, to prevent being stolen.

    Regarding alcohol on picnics: During times where the big C is present everywhere - make sure it is really allowed in the state that you are in. Some states in Germany have set up rules on alcohol not being allowed outside as ridiculous as it seems . My dad was working as a lorry driver and after his shift at the hotel or guesthouse in Rheinland Pfalz he stayed overnight in few months ago he got himself a beer and sat outside and completely by himself in the perimeter of the accommodation and his lorry. He actually got approached by some overly eager guy from the Ordungsamt and fined for having his 'Feierabendbier' outside. Bit over the top methinks, as no harm done to anyone. make sure it is really ok to do so in regards of extraordinary C19 rules, cause then you save yourself from having to pay a fine - Which in turn nicely links into the saving money topic again ;-)

    About the “fresh” fish that you buy at Rewe: If you don’t live directly by the sea, fish in German supermarkets is NOT fresh. The fish and seafood they offer at the fish counter was frozen, just like the packaged fish in the freezer isle. They just thaw it before they sell it to you. They even admit this when you ask them.

    • @simplegermany
      @simplegermany  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not all were frozen (if they were it says aufgetaut on the price sign). Some are also fresh. Obviously not as fresh as a fresh catch in a coastal town 😉

    You have to be very careful choosing another electricity or gas company, however, since many of the cheap ones have been going bankrupt with the extreme price rises and kicking out their customers, who end up with the most expensive providers. Here in Berlin, at least, people have been stuck with insane monthly rates of hundreds or even thousands of euros from the local providers. They will eventually get it back, but it is terrifying to receive a 2000 EUR bill for just January 2022.

    • @simplegermany
      @simplegermany  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You could Google the sport you're interested in and your city. So like 'basketball verein Dusseldorf'. Or even just 'Sportverein Dusseldorf". Another way is to look for Facebook groups located in your city that meet regularly to play sports. Hope that helps :)

    All in all very good tips, but did you also notice that some low-cost suppliers of electricity and gas recently terminated their customers' contracts because they were unable to maintain their very cheap contracts given the current high energy purchase prices?

    • @simplegermany
      @simplegermany  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes! And we are not promoting low cost providers, but instead the idea to compare and not to accept the status quo of your basic provider. On Stromauskunft, the comparison platform we mention, you can select to exclude low-cost providers. Ostrom, the provider we do mention, is not a low-cost electricity provider. Hope this clarifies 😊

    I was under the impression that starting from 1st January 2022, by law, all contracts can no longer be enforced to be at least a minimum of 12 or 24 months, a minimum of 3 months notice to cancel current contract and if in case wasn't canceled cannot be renewed automatically for 12 months. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

    • @simplegermany
      @simplegermany  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The second part is correct, the cancellation period got reduced to one month, however, a contract can still have a minimum length of up to 24 months. After that you can always cancel with one month notice.

    Very good information and advice, as always!
    I envy Germans for being able to choose electric and even natural gas providers. I'm not aware of any place in the US where this is possible.
    No free market whatsoever --- and I think we all accept this as "just the way it is." Hmmmm.
    On the other hand, the church tax strikes me, as it would most Americans, as weird, if not downright sinister!
    I suspect there is a long and interesting history behind it.

    Can we change current on going giro account IBAN to another??? Because I habe Sparkasse which I pay 7.50 per month. I need to change it to Commerzbank because they offer 0 fee. Main thing I need to keep IBAN because of my ABOs. Please do a video 🙌

    • @johanmesser9218
      @johanmesser9218 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is not possible, because the IBAN consider of 2 parts: first part is the Bankleitzahl (=bankcode), the 2. part is Kontonummer (=account number). Both together is your IBAN.
      So, if you change the bank, your IBAN always will change because the bankcode can only be used by your old bank, not your new.

    • @simplegermany
      @simplegermany  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No worries. You will get a new IBAN when changing banks, but often banks offer a changing service that they inform all Abos about the change and you can choose, which provider to switch. Commerzbank offers that service too: service.commerzbank.de/wie-funktioniert-ein-kontowechsel-zur-commerzbank/. So ideally, you open the Commerzbank account first (www.simplegermany.com/commerzbank-yt/), then use the changing service. And once everything got changed and is running smoothly, you can cancel your Sparkasse account. Hope this helps!

    Hi! I'm Roman Catholic and a regular churchgoer and will be moving to Germany soon. I don't know if I will get married in Germany. Just wanted to know if you know anything about me still being obligated to pay Church Tax?

    • @luci2k1
      @luci2k1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, you would have to pay Church Tax... however (if you are willing to lie about your religion): usually you can visit your church or take part in everyday church activities even if you do not pay the church tax (normally noone will ask you about it)... only if you want to use one of the more "special" services of the church (like marriage, baptisms, funerals, etc.) you should register... normally you won't be banned from having one of these, even if you are not "officially" part of the given church in Germany, but they will charge you heavily (for marriages or funerals usually at least double the "normal" price).

    • @simplegermany
      @simplegermany  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, you can find more details in our video on Church Tax: th-cam.com/video/u-w82t4tqPE/w-d-xo.html

      If you opt out at the Anmeldung you can still join the church once you want marry. Also your future spouse needs to be registered in the church as well.
      So, if you do not have fixed plans to marry in Germany soon, you do not have to choose the registration at a church now

      Mmh, things like the Sportverein, used/shared things can also apply to kids. Once your kids go to kindergarten or school there is also no more cost there (Kita - usually up to 3 years hast costs).
