    Honestly, I feel like there's nothing you'd get from this that you wouldn't get from a smartphone app.
    I also think in addition to the features you mentioned like larger canvas size, palette selection and animation. I think it'd be cool if you could plug it into the computer and be able to use it like a drawing tablet that works with a special program on your computer. It could probably help if you need to look at two things in one, like editing a frame on your tablet while the full animation plays on your computer.

      I feel like I've seen this kind of idea a couple times already, but it's a very niche thing honestly. Not saying it's a bad idea or not interesting, I just don't see it take off.

      as someone who does pixel art I can say that I feel having the buttons for the shortcuts would be much better then a smartphone app but a laptop is a million times better then either of these

    • @nmstoker

      Totally agree. Seems like it would need to be exceptional before it justified de-integrating from a mobile phone solution.
      If you look at cameras, it's only the really premium end where people go for stand alone devices. And that market is going to dwarf the number of people wanting to buy a device for pixel art
      For those that like the idea of custom buttons, a mobile phone game controller (eg Backbone or similar) might just meet this need whilst being valuable for other use cases besides.

    Honestly, it feels like it would be better if they had the screen have you use a (hopefully provided) stylus so you can be more precise. I know you can use those capacitive styluses but they feel really off compared to like a standard stylus.

    • @TheArtistInTheDark
      @TheArtistInTheDark 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Exactly, a Nintendo 3DS stylus comes to mind, 3DS' small screen is totally fine for art with the stylus. That and a simple timeline could've easily made it worth the 150

    I've been looking forward to this review and you did an excellent job breaking everything down.
    My 7 year old daughter would get a kick out of drawing with this as someone who also enjoys her etch & sketch. For anything more than childsplay though, this device is far too gimmicky. There are apps like Pixel Studio that anyone can already download to their phone or tablet that is far more capable.
    Anyone looking to learn pixel art for the sake of learning to draw or get into gamedev would already be incredibly limited by this device.
    It will probably sell, but will be likely be buried by future apps on smart devices.

      To be fiar you can say the same for handhadles and Digital music players both are growing indusries in 2022... And I can see adults who are hobbiest loving this too... Even I an online creative who does 50px50p, 100px100p and 300px300p pixel art with an HDR pallet would enjory this just to mess with and to create just to create... Kinda like my PDA for writing I can write on the go easly but it does not replace my desktop for writing.

    • @ThePixelExpedition
      @ThePixelExpedition 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@GreenBlueWalkthrough
      Most digital players are multifunctional and even at their cheapest one can get a player for around 30 or 40 dollars, so I don't think that's a strong comparison.
      As far as being a sketch tool, it's currently limited to 32x32 pixels and as someone who also sketches in canvases upwards of 50x50, closer to 100x100, this would be extremely limiting.
      Also, again, if adults might find this tool useful as an entry into pixel art, I would easily recommend a pixel art app for the phone or tablet they likely already have without having to pay an additional $100.

    I feel like there's a big disconnect between the way the device is styled and its goals.
    It's very crisp, minimalist looks aimed for professional, but it's toolset is targeting hobbyists*
    I could see the device being a lot more desirable if it had embraced being a cool thing with retro inspired styling (or even just any aesthetic at all)
    *(I don't think it's toolset looks sufficient for this, as someone who does all their pixel art on mobile the lack of a disjointed pen function for touch screen input is a massive downside and I think a big part of preventing large canvases)

  • @JubileeWins

    even as someone who does five pictures a year with no real business need, I immediately run into limitations with this. And there are phone apps that are so much better this device looks like a joke for me. It has similar price to a low end phone that can handle the pixel art editor and if battery is an issue, you can get an external battery for your phone for much less. I am honestly amazed that someone went through so much trouble only to not solve any actual problems artists may have...

    • @Frombehindyo

    A half-assed device. Can't make animations, can't swap color palettes, comes with no stylus. Pixel Art is the only type of art you can't just do on the go. You can always bring out a pen and pencil on the plane, but pixel art requires at least a tablet PC. There's purpose to a handheld pixel art tool, but this was clearly designed as a novelty gadget.

    The lack of eye dropper is huge but I’d think they could add that with a firmware update, wouldn’t need to add a button or anything, I’d say they could make it so if you hold down on the pencil tool it would be the eye dropper functionality, not sure how much coding would be involved in that. Not being able to animate isn’t a killer for me as I see this as a drawing board for getting ideas out while you’re on the go. Bring that drawing home upload it to your aseprite and start doing the detailed work. Good honest review and still looking forward to it.

    in lieu of an eyedropper, it would be nice if it kept history of the colors you've used and can access them, perhaps from a slideout menu activated by a button or something. Being able to quickly access your colors is absolutely essential to any drawing application (IMHO). A product as basic and single minded as this I couldn't see myself paying any more than £50 for (GBP). It'd make a nice stocking filler for your kids to get them excited about pixel art, but the price tag is a little too hefty for its lack of features.

  • @PantsCat

    Came to comment and see that my view is shared by a few folks already; but yeah, you can do all this and more on a few of the pixel art based mobile apps. Not only that, but if you were to make a dedicated handheld pixel art device, why wouldn't you include a little pen? Using fingers for it is incredibly frustrating. A pass for me!

    Is it possible for you to do some examples of how you would go about making 32x32 furniture for a first person perspective? My husband is programming a little game for the Panasonic 3d0 and it’s a raycaster and I would like to make some sprites for him but cannot wrap my head around making it look decent in such a limited size. Especially round things like a round table or a barrel for example. I cannot find any TH-camrs who do any first person. It’s all star dew valley style cutesy art.

    Seems like a cute toy, but isn't really set up for artist use (even on the go, for those of us that get distracted by our phones and might want an app-free alternative). Noticeably, it is sliding around when you use it in your review which prevents using it with only one hand on a desk; it might be fixable with some rubber feet, but there's multiple flaws that make me wonder if they tried prototyping or asking for input from their targeted user base when designing it.

    I've definitely known people who carry around a little six-inch sketchbook with them, so this feels like the equivalent of that for pixel art. It won't replace a professional's preferred tool for full pieces, but it could still be a good way to play with small ideas. As someone who doesn't do a lot of sketching though, I wouldn't want to pay that much for it.
