I think it looks beautiful! I think the key was to stop trying to mimic EVERY step Bob was taking, and only mimic the steps that could be translated well to pixel art, after you did that it started all making sense.
i totally feel you, the fuzzy & blurry type of art is a style i have yet to understand how to do with the sharpness of pixel art, but if someone can make it look like water color; who knows, maybe we'll find a new technique one day :) i think your piece came out really well tho!

Its possible sometimes doing it by accident! You need to mix up Seminar colors in very low contrast
