  • Kim Kardashian’s latest Vogue cover has everyone talking, with many accusing the reality star and businesswoman of Blackfishing and copying some of Naomi Campbell’s most famous looks without proper acknowledgment. And if “liking” the claims on social media mean anything, it looks as though the supermodel might agree.

    "This is just what she does" THANK YOU LONI!
    Kim watches black women, especially the ones that are either mega superstars OR not known yet, and she copies their looks and pretends she was unaware or that she and her "team" came up with it. You cannot name a single style/ outfit/ makeup look / idea that Kim is known for that black women didn't make popular first.
    And, Vogue really needs to say something. There's no way that someone on the creative team at Vogue isn't aware of the looks that NAOMI F'ING CAMPBELL wore in a previous issue, or even in a competing magazine. They are either up Kim's ass too far or they are being willfully obtuse if they really say they didn't know.

    • @ExtraordinaryTrading
      @ExtraordinaryTrading 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@anitarhodes1839 Being blonde is not exclusive to white people. There are black people who are natural blondes, such as Melanasians and Australian Aborigines. However, being a natural blonde is rare amongst all races of people. In America, only 4% of people can produce blonde hair, so although we see white people with blonde hair all over the place, the majority are bottle blondes.
      Straight hair is also not exclusive to white people. I am black with 3C hair and I have many black relatives who have naturally straight, wavy and 3C hair. A lot of white people and others who walk around wearing straight hair don't have naturally straight hair. They have wavy, curly or kinky hair and straighten their hair just as some black, Latin and Asian people do as well.
      In general, the term cultural appropriation is used when the dominant culture copies from a group of minorities. Often involved is taking credit for creating what's being appropriated which leads to financial rewards and erasure.
      Black people who wear straight hair or wigs are not taking away from other groups of people, and oftentimes do so because black people have been repeatedly told that wearing our hair in its natural state is unprofessional.
      The fact that the CROWN act is in the process of being passed, because in 2021-2022 black people are still being expelled from school, fired or not hired at all for wearing our natural hair shows where the problem lies.
      Since the day Black people stepped foot in America we have been told to assimilate...name, language, appearance, religion, etc. all forced upon us. Assimilation is not the same as cultural appropriation.
      Minorities adapting to the standards of the dominant group for survival purposes is a common practice worldwide.

      Yes Yes & Yes. Now, I'm not black but I am a POC (Puerto Rican) and if I say this then I will get stones thrown at me. I'm glad to see this written from a Black woman because it's so true....we ALL know hands down Black women are the leaders in fashion, hair fashion, etc. however.......it's a little unrealistic to think people need to kiss the feet of every black woman they see as a form of "thank you" for your natural creativity and fashion culture...it's crazy. I just think we need to put more Black women in the forefront and present them better in media etc. instead of gatekeeping trivial things like cloth (unless it's literally traditional culture wear) and hair styles. I'll probably still get stones for even writing this but I don't care. Honestly, just over 4-5 years ago I finally let loose and let my natural 3c4a curls out and let them do what they do, and while I kept a flatiron in hand years prior I was afraid of being called out and people saying I'm trying to be black because I let my curls out. IT's so stupid. Recently I cut my hair into a long-pixie cut and just rocking the curls and I'm still in fear at work here of people thinking I'm trying to be black when all I'm doing is wearing the literal natural curls that grow from my dome.
      SORRY for the rant/vent. Long story short, we just need to really get on the same page as to what black fishing REALLY is....because some things are just inspired by black and others are literally ripping from black. That's the difference.

      It’s not a double standard. White women can wear their natural hair and it is viewed attractive and professional. That is one of the reasons why black women wear/wore wigs and/or straighten their hair. Traditional black styles afros, braids and locs historically have not been viewed attractive and professional by white people. That’s why when the Kardashians wore “boxer” braids, it became socially accepted to wear those type of braids to work, school etc. However Black people have been wearing braids for YEARS and told that it’s not professional and even worse “ghetto.” It’s in no way a double standard.

This you can appreciate about my culture but from afar??? What if black women couldn't straighten their hair anymore? Braids have been used in many cultures over the centuries and EVERYONE should be allowed to have ANY hairstyle they want, just like they can dye their hair any color and wear the clothes they want. This is our freedom. We shouldnt let anyone dictate who can wear what.

    Does Adrienne really want to blame the fashion editor instead of kim? You think she dumb and unaware? She's the one who agreed to it. When it's positive feedback from the public they only praise the celebrity on the cover the the fashion editor, so you are clearly only using that when it's convenient for you. Also, when Adrienne is in the wrong, she just uses the "confused" tactic.

    This is a lesson on the importance of being well-informed and the importance of historical research. Vogue is a multi-million dollar magazine entity that must have staff and researchers at every turn who should be able to vet each magazine cover, article, etc is produces. Kim Kardashian is a billionaire in the beauty and fashion industry who will also be able to practice law. Both entities have unlimited resources at their disposal- spend some of that money on being well-informed. Poor decision-making is not an excuse for 2022.

    I absolutely agree that when the similarities are this clear, an acknowledgement of inspiration is so important. Otherwise, typically the white or non-black person overshadows the original and is given undue credit! On the other hand…if we feel that wearing braids is a no-no for white women, could we agree not to wear the Euro-Asian-textured hair of other races of women on our heads as black women? We need to extend grace in that area, particularly, in my opinion. Otherwise, we should acknowledge our hypocrisy there.

      I understand, but for black women wearing wigs, we still very much so appear as Black Women, as we should. We don't look like ayone else whilst wearing a wig; and us wearing those wigs was done so for various reasons, protective hairstlying yes, but assimilation into euro-centric beauty standards also, after being told for generations that our natural hair wasn't enough.
      We braided our hair to follow a route to escape the plantation. We used to braid our hair and hide grains of rice just to be able to eat at least something whilst working on the plantation. And we braided our hair to show and take pride in the African tribe we belonged to. No matter what we do with our hair we're always criticized. No mattrr what Kim K or any other non black Woman does with her hair, the lash isn't nearly as heavy for them as it is for us.Even when they appropriate.

    • @naturalhealermom
      @naturalhealermom 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      @@kairelvictoria2148 Do white women not appear as white women when wearing braids? I feel they do. It’s clear that they’re white women with braids lol. I hear you sis, in terms of the assimilation piece. Aspiring to whiteness continues to be beneficial economically and otherwise. Whereas staying true to us doesn’t seem to lend the same benefit. When others, then, benefit from imitating what is natural to us but doesn’t always benefit us, the king-making nature of white adoption (of anything) becomes evident, and the unfairness is glaring. Still, I think there is an element of hypocrisy here that needs to be acknowledged. Furthermore, we can take our power back by learning to accept ourselves FIRST, I think. To really step it up, the best thing would be to divest from Euro-centric systems altogether and build of and for our own. That would indeed be a long-term solution and would require mass Black participation, but there would be some immediate benefits in even pursuing this. If we could just come together and get on the same page.
