And also pushing the envelope on the drums. To burn a trail of inspiration, to achieve a higher self. In both i learned to become one with music and words. To always think out side the box. The sex, drugs and rock and roll thing was never my favorite. I like to make people think. To see the painting at all angles. To all my RUSH family. You are a lucky draw of the hearts. We are rare. I couldn't help but notice that triangular folded flag up on your wall behind you. We have three of them in a nice wooden framed box with a glass front. We remember the men who served in the United States military who have passed away, and we see each of their funeral flags and remember their service to our country. Some day there might be a fourth flag on that wall representing my service to our country. I would like to thank your relative, Eric, for their service. It is a major honor to hear from you. I thank you and your family for serving our great country. Yes, that flag was given to my grandmother when my grandfather passed away. His name was Herb, but I called him Papa. He served in the Air Force like his father before him. Although the Air Force wasn't created yet, my great-grandfather served on three missions with Patton. My grandfather, Papa, was also a police officer and chief of Police in Vermont. At his funeral, after the 21-gun salute, I was given a couple of the bullet shells, which are tucked into the fold of the flag. Papa was a great man. He cherished and honored my grandmother, was a good father to my Mom, and, although he's passed on, he remains a shining beacon of what a man should be. I'm blessed beyond measure to have strong and loving, good examples of men in my family. You've made my day. It's a pleasure and honor to know you're here. Merry Christmas my friend, Eric
How wonderful it is that we have all these songs that Neil wrote the lyrics for. I'm not knocking other bands who knocked out endless great tunes but sometimes you can only read about sex drugs & rock n roll so many times. You're not going to re-read lyrics like that. Circumstances, as you probably know, was about Neil's time in London in the early '70's. Although ultimately unsuccessful in trying to 'make it' in London, that period would spawn the lyrics or at least part of the lyrics of 2 great songs, Circumstances & Nobody's Hero ( the part about a gay guy he was friends with). Neil's lyrics, like his drumming, are one of a kind. In my life, I most enjoy the company of insanely intelligent people. My college roommate and still best friend has a PhD in Physics, and is the chair of a university physics department. Joel is also writing a physics text book right now. My wife teaches science. Like the people closest to me, Neil's lyrics and Geddy and Alex's music challenge us. Repetitive simplistic songs about sex, drugs, and rock and roll may be fine for the masses, but for you and me, we expect and demand more. Neil never took the obvious, easily walked path when he wrote lyrics. Whenever story he told, an experience he shared, and a life lesson explained in a simple parable, he wrote in a way that was his alone. Our lives are shaped and influenced by what we endure and overcome. Somehow Neil's lyrics influenced and inspired us all. Each of us pouring his words through the filters of our individual experiences. This is the power of music and words. As Neil once said, "It's a little bit of human magic." Thanks again.
