    I was asked to play bass in a group recently. I don’t play bass. But the short scale and low, low price made me feel like I was playing a lightweight 4 string guitar that I didn’t regret splashing the cash for. Now I’m probably going to actually purchase a bass that costs 3x this one but I’m not getting rid of this lil guy.

    This low budget cost Squier Bronco short scale electric bass guitar is a no nonsense instrument without the bells 'n whistles which most bass players prefer today but not me cause I performed in many stages whether it be in a church setting, coffee house venues or outside gigs I never had Nooo problems whatsoever! There's an old music term that "Less is More" and SIMPLICITY goes a long way! Thank you Sir Tyler for this awesome bass guitar review, cheers!!

    Just picked this bass up used and absolutely love it. I bought it to resell but will probably keep it. It obviously doesn't have the sound choices or tone of my Ernie Ball Stingray but the tone was surprisingly good and playability is great. Going to actually use it this weekend at a gig!

    Great Vid Tyler! I miss my Bronco sometimes. I had replaced the stock pickup with a Fender American Strat bridge unit. Sounded better, but not tons. I always remember the neck as being one of the most stable on any bass I've owned. Never needed adjustment through temp. changes, bumps and bangs. I only sold it because the string spacing combined with the chunkiness didn't quite work for me. Maybe heavier strings might have improved that feel.

    I have this bass and a few other bass guitars overall it has a certain all around charm to it one of Leo Fender's last bass guitars he designed for fender. I can see so many ways it looks like Leo would put it together. Great points on how the poles have more force in the middle I never considered that!

    • @TylerSpicer
      @TylerSpicer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      For sure! It’s a sweet enough design, and so very practical and business like in a very Leo way using all those parts that were already lying around. Yeah, definitely more density to the magnetic field over those two strings, 100%. T

    Great honest review Tyler 👍👍 I picked one up for a good price with a Seymour Duncan hot rails pickup and a 4 saddle bridge already installed. It still has the stock tuners and they function ok but those too I'll swap out at some point.
    I've fitted a black pickguard to replace the flimsy white one.
    As you said it's ok for the price but with a bit of extra money spent it can be a great little bass. 😂

    I got a bass like that one- it was cool, sounded quorky with the guitar pickup and all- I hated the bridge at first but then grew to love it-then I swaped the pickup for like a 12$ pickup I orderd from china( the non-split 50s percision single coi style) and man it became a tone machine- ad abit of foam under the strings and it became a dub/reagge machine- lots of fun with that litle bass!

    That actually sounds great, like a short scale early 50's single coil Precision!
    If Squier - or anyone else - made one of these with a single coil P pick-up for even output, decent hardware and a nice sunburst or natural wood finish, I'd definitely want one!
    Would make a nice, punchy alternative to my fretless J and massive sounding Gretsch G2220.

    Hey Tyler: good video. I used to own a Squire PJ Precision Affinity bass and sold it in January (not because I didn't like it but I needed some quick money unfortunately). It came as that starter pack (chord, 15 watt Fender amp, bass, and strap) and for the money the Affinity is a decent lower price instrument. I also noticed lower quality bridge, turners, pick ups, etc., but when you are on a tight budget it's hard to knock them. Now compared to my Elite and Ultra series USA made and even Mexicam made basses no doubt you can see the gap in quality. But when you need something I wouldn't hesitate to get another one. This Bronco series I am not particularly fond of, but it seems ok. To be honest, the new paranormal Squire Jazz telecaster bass has piqued my interest, I think it look really cool in that white blonde color. Anyhow, talk to you soon. Cheers! Patrick

    • @TylerSpicer
      @TylerSpicer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      2016 Road King hey Patrick! I totally agree with your analysis - decent pieces of wood that could be better served by better hardware. Your Elites and ultras are a world away and I love feeling that level of quality in an instrument. Interesting you mention the paranormals - you’re not the first to do so in the comments, I must check them out! Good to see that this bronco is at least a very playable instrument with the potential to sound good for a player for very little money - it really is in the hands! T

    Great Video Man!! I got one of these for $20 at a pawn shop I work at one day a week fixing computers. I love short scale basses. I was at my buddies house playing with his Fender P Bass and he put in a set of Fender P Bass Pick Ups that have the fatter pick ups, they look just like the Ernie Ball Sting Ray pick ups just not a giant humbucker but the P Bass Tetris type. I’m curious what you would think of addding a set of Duncan’s just like that?

    I'm looking for a cheap bass to start on. Got to try a bronco while at Guitar Center and the frets scratched up my palm. They were poorly made and felt like they weren't filed, they were jagged and sharp. Also the neck wood isn't finished so if any dings/dents/scratches come to the wood it will splinter. Really sucked because I was hellbent on getting one. Now looking into an SG.

      I put an Artec dual rail pickup in mine. I had to remove a very, very slight bit of plastic near the corners of the pickup route on the pickguard. Maybe took five minutes going slowly with a round file. I've found that to be necessary with most of the Dimarzio type dual rail pickups in strat pickguards.

      I put a cheap(14$) Saphue Dual Hot Rail Humbucker in it. I had to shove it in a little, but I didn't have to cut anything. I did this as single coils play the kitchen lights in my house better than they play the strings, and it performs very well with them. However, when the lights are out, the Fender Strat pickup as you can hear is still very useful.

    I tried one but it had old strings and was played with a funny amp, sounded horrible however it sounds decent in this video, almost like a p bass but with less bass and treble and more low mids. The low mids in a p bass gives it that warm tone but i find the bronco a tad to muddy and not as clear sounding or as thick as a p bass. But other than that its sound is decent.
    Edit: id love to see a video on a fender(or squire) bass VI. Ive seen people do chords higher up, eq'd like a guitar and loop it and then play a bassline over it with a bassier eq.

    • @TylerSpicer
      @TylerSpicer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Jupiter James-Reynolds I think that’s very similar to my experience with the single coil Squier P basses I’ve played. Not as punchy in the mids and when you roll the tone off it’s bigger in the low bass giving that potentially muddy effect. The Bronco definitely comes across as P-esque. I’ll see if I can get hold of a Bass VI! T

      Seymour Duncan are the best option I believe! You can use and Strat/mustang guitar pickups which can lead to some different sounds. Going with a bar/rail magnet will give you consistency across the strings. T

    • @TylerSpicer

      It would need both the body and pick guard routed. Using a 50s style single-coil p pickup would make that easier, but I think it would still require some routing. T

    Is a P bass or a J bass?

    • @czguy3045
      @czguy3045 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Bronco is neither a P nor a J. It's probably most like the original '51 type P bass but not so much like the current/modern with the split pickup. The short scale alone makes it its own thing.
      If you want a short scale at this price point, the Epi EB-0 is the only real competition but at $100-ish more, you can nab a used short scale Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar which is definitely a big step up all around. It is a PJ config which is about 75% P, 25% J and definitely more versatile.

      @@czguy3045 I had a VM Jaguar in the corner forever and just found a new SD Quarter Pound P pickup in a box a couple days ago so, it's all on my workbench right now 🙂. Super easy swap...2 solder joints on the top volume pot. That's it. But I took the pickgaurd off and traced it on some stock paper, and gonna look around for someone who can make me something cool to replace the stock black p-gaurd...bass is black too, so kinda plain Jane lame...its already a cool offset SS, so I think it requires a special pickgaurd 🤘, especially with that new SD QP pickup installed. Oh yeah, I also found some new HipShot open gear lite tuners...also black, ha. But, Squire drills the tuning peg holes slightly larger, and then pounds a barbed tooth bushing in, with a hammer 🔨 lol...or it seems so anyhows 🤔. So the HipShot's are just a little too loose for me. Though, it's (hole) probably only 1/32" larger, it's sloppy enough that I left the stock tuners alone. I'm sure the HipShots would've been fine once screwed in, but I'm OCD and I'd always know...haha, but also, once under tension, the new tuners may have been slightly unstable and in that case, the stock ones look and feel good...a good amount of teeth in the gear compared to any other similar stock tuner I have around (I'm a guitar tech). 🎸
      Then, I put a Babicz bridge I found laying around on...blacked out too. 😆⛹‍♀️
      So, at this point you realize that I must've bought this bass, and the replacement upgrade parts a while ago and just forgot 😳 , I mean, I still don't remember buying any of it, but oh well...its cool I did and I have a little project to work on and over-analyze for weeks, until I eventually accept that I had it dialed in after first week. This is the first week 🥴🤠🤯...
      * in my serious voice: It also has a Rosewood fretboard! Not sure what year this is...s/n starts 122557.. 🤔 sometimes the best used gear finds are sitting in you're own storage are still in the unopened box it shipped in 🤩😆. Seriously, it's a good bass so far. Impressed with it. Nut looks sorta like bone...but I would think it's plastic. Haven't gotten there yet. I'll replace it with ...anything but plastic if that's what it is. Well see what kinda crazy pickgaurd I can find someone to make me, and whatever else I come up with and maybe I'll post it on Instagram...haven't been on insta in a minute 🙃
      This bass was a player right out of the box. I decided to have fun with it, knowing that the integrity of this instrument is A+. Great neck. Easy balance and weight, standing with it strapped on. Lol...I seriously found an entire bass in my "bass-ment" 😆. Then found all it's replacement parts, acting on a hunch sparked by the memory of finding a random Babicz bass bridge in black chrome when unpacking my workshop in the new house a couple years ago. Nice string spacing as well 🤹🏽‍♂️🥳
      🥱🥱🤤😴🛌 whew... night, Adderall wore off.

      @@leeasbury7273 Nice. My VM Jag definitely isn't my favorite bass but it's fun, feels good and sounds good. It's my only short scale though I do have a Sire U5 on order.
      I have EMG pickups in mine. The P is Alnico and the Jazz pickup is the ceramic one. I have a brown tort guard on my candy red Jag though the one I bought requires removing about about 2mm of material near the metal control plate.
      I have a buddy that has four of them. Two still have stock pickups and the actually sound great though my favorite of his had LaBella flats on it... still sounds great with the stock P pickup. He has another with the EMG Geezer Butler set which sounds equally good.

    Cheap and cheerful made in China bass. May be quality issues with sharp frets as stated in the comments. What is going on with that bridge grouping the saddles in pairs? Surely they could fit a proper one. No bargain at £170, you can do much better for that price. You’re paying through the nose for the Squire/Fender decal on the headstock.
