  • Most of the artists I've been getting recommended lately have been Manga artists. So in this episode of Illustrator reacts, I'm going to react to the art of Yoshihiro Togashi, Masashi Tanaka, ONE (creator of the original One Punch Man webcomic), I guess a bit of Yusuke Murata, but I covered him more in depth in a previous episode, Q Hayashida and Katsuhiro Otomo.
In this episode some f the work we look at is from Akira, Dorohedoro, One Punch Man, Hunter x Hunter and the Gon manga.

You could say _One Piece_ because everything is so clear & distinct from one another and so consistently detailed and fresh & pleasing to look at : Oda did this for *TWENTY-TWO* years, starting when the animation style really kicked in at ~Ch.150-200 - Idk, I had that feeling by then that it changed significantly since the beginning, but it was a while ago -, and with ALMOST no breaks (www.reddit.com/r/OnePiece/comments/8k7ebi/comment/dz5j27z)

Oh, well, if you wanna write XXX in italic, so _XXX_ , well you surround XXX with underscores : _ ; i.e. those lines that you could use to underline text, but can't because your keyboard doesn't allow that on laptops or cellphones
You get an underscore by maintaining the "Shift" key down and pressing on the usual negative sign (i.e. "-") key
The underscores on the left and right (one on each side) need to be RIGHT NEXT to the word, NO SPACE between them; and if there's smth else glued RIGHT NEXT to them but even more on the outside, clutching the underscores in a sandwich, then the effect won't work, like here :

Assistants are usually only brought in later into the existence of a manga when the mangaka is slowing down either due to health issues(which most of them face) or creative struggles.
Still, the assistants are trained by the mangaka themselves to match their style as perfectly as possible. Miura has trained two assistans only in the last 3 years or so for Berserk because otherwise he was never going to finish it.
The man has been drawing Berserk for 29 years and he still said it took him a lot of time to train his assistants to draw as close to him as possible(and they only work on backgrounds, by the way).

This is great! I can't believe I'm just finding your channel now!
I would love to see you delve into the art of Eichirou Oda, the Mangaka of One Piece. A lot of people I've talked to have told me that they can't get into One Piece because of Oda's cartoonish anatomy etc, but he creates such beautiful composition. His art has real movement and feel, and even his background characters have well thought out and interesting (if not a little weird and silly) designs!
I mean, he puts SO much thought into his character designs. Like in one of the very first arcs, our villain can often be seen pushing up his glasses awkwardly with the palm of his hand by his wrists, but it isn't until we see his gloves that have claws on each finger that we realize that he pushes up his glasses like that with them on so he doesn't accidentally shank his face!
    It's really worth looking at

Would you consider an episode centered around page/panel composition or reading flow (don't know the technical term). A lot of art that you've covered (although not in this episode) is cover art and I personally find the actual comic/manga pages so fascinating because they have to connect to one another.
The reason I bring this up here is because there are many mangaka who are exceptional at that even though their art may not be exceptional (for example Akira Toriyama or Eiichoro Oda). Especially Oda is one of my favourite artists because of that and the amazing amount of creativity in terms of design.

Imagine doing a fan submission comic/manga reacts? As in, fans can submit a small comic or segment of a comic they’ve done. I think that could be pretty cool, and good to give some up and coming comic artists inspiration and critique, who are in your own community.
Can I also mention how inspiring this episode was? Since I absolutely love manga and I wish to create my own one day, and I adore storytelling and art, your speech as you explained ONE’s One Punch Man work (for anyone wondering, that’s at 7:26) just really inspired me to use my spare looseleaf paper to start trying to dive into the world of graphic novels. You should do an "Illustrator reacts to Good and Bad Animations"
Cause even when they aren't comics, I feel than you can still criticize a lot of the art, colors, movement, framing, etc...
