Back when racing was racing. No stage racing BS, no aero push. No follow the leader around Daytona Speedway. Horsepower and drafting got you the checkers!!!
That's my car. Dad and I watched NASCAR in the 70s and were King Richard fans as well as Dodge people. In 1998 I found my dream, a mint 1974 Dodge Charger and own it to this day. It proudly wears its 43 stickers and license plate frame. Love live the 43 Charger!
Really one of the first uses of the “glow” florescent colors in racing. In contrast to the famous Petty blue, they wanted the STP red car to be easily identifiable to fans on television coverage, as well as at the track. On television coverage particularly, this light blue and glow red paint scheme jumped out of the screen.
Think STP wanted Richard to paint his cars all red but he protested to keep the blue and this was the compromise. Awesome scheme and the best looking car on the track back in the day. 😎
If you look at the attention to detail on Petty’s cars you can see why he was so successful. A lot of the old cars looked not amateurish but short cuts were taken. Petty’s cars were first class and almost always finished. Dale Inman was a great crew chief and builder as was Petty. Attention to details was one of their advantages.
I lived in Jacksonville, Florida from 1975-1985 and there was a house near by me that a guy had a 74 charger that was Petty Blue with the STP red areas. There were no decals or number on the car. The car also had silver wheels on it like this car in video. The front grille was missing, could not see a radiator or engine and then one significant thing that stood out was the blue tubing in the front where the suspension and radiator would be. I looked to be a 74 Petty Charger shell. I was young, friends and I rode bikes all around the neighborhood and saw the car many times. I know I wasn't seeing things, being a Petty fan and knowing what cars looked like. This same house had other Mopar cars parked in a row. The same gentleman had a Petty Blue Plymouth Superbird as well. This was way before values took off like they are now. I did see him once drive the Superbird around the neighborhood.
Oh wow, very very cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's amazing how certain things like that will stick with us for ever. Thank you so much for sharing that story. I've got a few stories like that too and have always wondered what happened to the cars. Thank you again!
Wasn't that body run up until the '78 season, under rules that allowed use of bodies of a model-year up to three years old to run in a respective season? I recall it well because Petty stayed with Dodge through the '78 season, after which Dodge presented him with the "aerodynamically improved" replacement for the now boxy, luxury-oriented Charger: The Magnum... which Petty said "...Had the aerodynamics of a cinder block!" and forced him to run with Oldsmobile for '79, running the 2-y/o Cutlass 442 body, which had some of the best aerodynamics had for a safety-bumper "whale-bodied" car.
I was just thinking that! It doesnt matter what Dodge/Chrysler it is from the 60s into the 70s they all had that signature sound whether its a slant 6 or a monster hemi!
One more comment “Throttle Power” cool ass name, I cain’t believe the number “43” is on a damn Toyota! I wish Adam Petty was still alive to race and take over his grandfather’s number. This is a awesome video, I view it all the time.
I remember those screaming around the high banks, back in the day, looking so much better than those Monte Carlos. Petty will always be "the King". No one else can surpass his dominance in that era.
I owned two Chargers a 74 SE with the 400 and a 72 that had built up 318 with J model heads aluminum intake headers and TRW forged pistons. It was a manual steering, brakes and A833 four speed.

THROTTLE POWER👀 I have pictures of this car at Daytona on the pole with Petty and Person in 1974, it was the only Daytona 450 this race was 10% less laps due to the Energy Crisis in 1973, that was the beginning of the oil embargo!Ha Ha, I wonder if we only knew what was to come! Gas prices were pennies a gallon now it’s dollars per gallon! Remember the gas pumps that only went up to 99.9⛽️cents per gallon! Never again, at least we got to have another round of Muscle Cars starting with the 05 GT Mustang and even that is over now with no more Camaro and the Challenger is even going EV. He was looking for advancement at legacy but after 2 years with the King he wanted to be on the road going to the tracks and he got an opportunity to do just that! But not with legacy, he got to know Richard Petty as the king would come into the shop every week to see everyone and just last week he got to hang out with him when he detailed a new Supra for a photo shoot and the photographer took a few pictures of him and the king together, He has some great memories of his time there and is grateful for it.
