That was just an amazing video on brushes Quincy! Some say public speaking is the number one human fear. Mine would be playing brushes in front of Quincy! Thank you so much Quincy for your great teaching videos. I watch them over and over!
A great session! Thanks for breaking things down so clearly. I have been playing brushes for decades and picked up many new things to improve my playing.
Great feel, great sound.I remember that brush lesson a few years ago also excellent.... There's something really great about the movement brushes give to songs/ tunes...It also helps stick control I find...❤️
I have completed all of the brush classes! I too love the Vic Firth heritage brushes. These exercises are clear, precise, and create a very effective ground work for any brush situation you may find yourself in...if you practice DAILY! Thank you professor Davis! Going to hit the 8 killer be-bop phrases...Also, my old drum teacher Joe Raynor, got me into classical samba/Brazilian phrases. Can you do a few videos expounding on the American Jazz version of Samba and Latin based phrases? Also, I would love to get you input on some Afro-Cuban phrases. ie. Mozambique, Nani go. I have Subscribed and liked all the content so far.
Hey, Prof. Davis, this is like the third or fourth time now that you've dropped a video that addressed exactly what I was working on at the time. It's wild. Thank you for these lessons! 🙌
Thank you great!!! You demonstrate the idea of relaxing on the brushes . this really helped me , specific instructions are very helpful. I Will shed more on brushes
Brother Q ... you kept your word about making a uptempo brush video . I've been waiting two years and it was worth it! and that my Brother makes YOU that guy 👑🥁🔥
Great videos! Thank you! Brush lesson idea…. WHAT to play and WHEN to play, non-traditional brush patterns…. Ex: Dinah Washington - “What a Difference a Day Makes”.
I swear to God Q, you always know exactly what I need, exactly when I need it. I really been concentrating on my brush work. As we all know, there's only one way to get good at playing brushes. Been concentrating on my jazz ride pattern as well. Playing at higher tempos, and timing myself. You look down at your timer, THAT WAS 1 MINUTE?!! LOL
Thanks for these brush lessons! Fantastic in depth analysis. One thing I’d like to see is tips on how to solo with brushes. I feel limited in vocabulary with them. It would be great to hear what you have to say about soloing with them
Great teaching, great execution (of course), and great didactic application. In short, great Quincý. A very affectionate hug and thank you for sharing all this. To love music is to love drums and vice versa.
fantastic man! more than anything im grateful for your personableness and how excited you are to help us newbies learn. you're awesome got a new sub here
I’m glad to hear my lessons are clear and easy to follow. Thanks for watching and hopefully for your next comment, you’ll learn how to spell the word “practice”. 🤣🤣🤣
Hey everyone! Let me know what brush techniques and concepts you want me to cover in my next brush lesson (Part IV)? Hope you like this video! ----Video Time Stamp---- 00:00 - Playing Intro 00:48 - Welcome 01:07 - Lesson Description 02:22 - Brush Basics 03:27 - Up Tempo Patterns 08:50 - 3/4 Waltz Time Patterns 10:09 - Two Feel Patterns 17:03 - Ballad Patterns 20:48 - Closing Remarks
Quincy: thanks for the video, so cool! I have two questions 1. Dave Weckle demonstrated a brush “trick” where he hit the rim with the “shoulder” of the brush and he got some crazy vibrations or “buzzes” from the brush. Can you demonstrate that? (I hope I explained it clearly). 2. Do you always turn the snares off, when using the brushes? Thanks
Could you add tips on using match grip for brushes? Thx for your content. It's been super helpful as a jazz drumming refresher just in time for a gig. PS I'd also love to see you shout out some bad@$$ lady jazz drummers.
Many thanks from the mountains of Yunnan ! You must be so good to raise the mayonnaise ! I vote also for Brazilian ! Would you dare a brush Mozambique ?
Thanks so much for this lesson, and all of your lessons, Professor! I’m a jazz piano undergrad at UNCo, but have been dabbling on the drums and these lessons are SO helpful! Congrats on 20k 🎉
Great as usual! Your videos never disappoint. I asked you recently to cover ballads and you covered that too. That’s was exactly what I was looking for. Thanks and keep them coming! FP
Hi Quincy, brush playing is an area where I need lots of help. I can play the basic medium fast and ballad tempos, but I’m just not as good as I would like to beat it. You sound fantastic playing with brushes. I go on TH-cam and watch players using brushes and they make it look easy but it really isn’t at all. One more thing. I saw dejohnette with the Keith Jarrett trio use the third method of brush playing that you demonstrated and he sounds so good using that method, of he sounds great all the way around anyway, he’s a master player. Thanks for the video, I’ll try practicing your technique. Thanks, Chuck.
Another great video! Always solid info from you. For uptempo brushes, one of my favorites is KWash on Tommy Flanagan's “Mean Streets” (from the album Jazz Poet). Not just that tune, but the whole album. Anyway, thanks for always posting great content. Greetings from Shanghai. Charles
@@drumqtips Hi Quincy, I don't if they're still available, but years ago you could get something which was a combination of stick AND brush. Perhaps they don't exist anymore -?!
Hi, as always : Fantastic Lesson ! I was wondering if there is a chance to work also a bit on comping in these styles and especially how to come easily back into the pattern once you have broken them up. To me this is quite the biggest challenge. Once you have established the move/pattern all is fine but if you start comping and want to reestablish...it gets bumpy..
It may be helpful to have a few comp patterns worked out that you practice really slow getting in and out of. That will get you more comfortable with the concept.
@@drumqtips BTW Jo Jones was one of the first to had a book out on brushwork ("Brush Artistry", 1968). Love to see you walking us trough those ideas. Thigpens book e.g. was complemented with a DVD but Jo Jones' work is hard to get and hardly demonstrated somewhere)
Hi Quincy I'm following you from germany. Really learned a lot from you. Thank you very much!! There is quite a lot if information about basic brush patterns. Unfortunately very little about advanced embellishments or brush rudiments and how to incorporate them seemlessly into your playing. Things to make the basic patterns shine.. Could you cover something like that, please?
Mrs. Quincy, I got a question about practicing. For me, I don't really like to sweat, but I watch the master like Elvin Jones who play so hard and so fast that they end up sweating all around. Do you believe that practicing fast tempos inevitably ends up in sweating, or maybe it's a matter of technique. Sorry about my English I'm from Peru. Greetings from my country or as we Peruvian say "Saludos, mi hermano".
Saludos, mi hermano! Playing the drums is a very physical thing and sometimes when we play fast or hard, we will inevitably sweat. Lucky you If you are able to play faster hard and not sweat but most drummers do indeed sweat when they play. Sorry to break the bad news to you Damien :-)
My apologies. I thought you were saying you had names/ tracks specifically featuring brushes. No worries! I'll work through your videos. Have a great day, Quincy!
Patrick, you are nit understanding me. There is a list of tracks and albums featuring brushes that I’ve provided in the description of 1 or 2 of my brush videos. I can’t help you any further.
L'est you forget th-cam.com/video/OXL8YmharTw/w-d-xo.html -- look up Quincy's credentials. He's the real deal and laying down gold for free. If you get a chance, take a lesson with him. I did, I don't even play drums.
This is one of your best videos man, thank you :)
Wow, I’m glad you think so! Thanks for tuning in my man.
Your #3 example is actually #12 in the Philly book called Fancy Fancy. 👍
it‘s also one of the two patterns John Riley was shown by Jack DeJohnette and which he included in his book „The Art of Bop Drumming“ 👍
Thanks, Quincy, for this excellent lesson. Idea: how about Bossa, Samba, and Afro-Cuban styles on brushes?
Good idea!
Yes please!
Great idear 👌🏽
Yep. Good call.
Bring on part 4! 🥳
Ha! I’m not sure I have a part 4 in my Luke. Lol!

Ha ha! I thought we were friends Rita. No reason to fear me friend :-) I always look forward to hearing from you!
Fantastic demonstrations, Q! So glad you covered 3/4 time with brushes. Not as easy as you make it look. Wonderful job!
I appreciate that as always Tom!

That counter clockwise circle sounds hot at up tempos.

Tips on switching smoothy between sticks and brushes without disrupting the groove too much?
Yes!!!

Mean Streets! Some of the finest brush work recorded👍🏾
Thanks for very informative and good videos. Maybe a lesson on latin brushes?
Good idea! Thank you
Hi Quincy, just in case you are familiar with some of the patterns from Philly Joe‘s „Brush Artistry“…you could maybe demonstrate some …
That's a good idea Christian!
Thanks máster. I would like you play off beats with brushes 😉
Dope !!!
Thanks Chris 🙏🏾🙏🏾

I like Evans UV1 or Ambassador Coated

I’m sorry for some wrong words, I meant to say , I’m just not as good as I would like to be at it.
