Such a normal scene is rare in today's EastEnders. A normal family discussing normal problems over fish and chips, far more watchable than over-blown fake drama.
Apparently, when Wendy Richard joined the cast, the producers wanted her to cut her hair. If you have a look at her in this clip, her hair has grown back to the size it was, when she was Shirley in Are You Being Served, since then.
This is decent script-writing. Multiple characters interacting over fairly day-to-day things. By comparison, today's scripts are a series of dramatic monologues. The difference is stark!
You're right. When Wendy was cast as middle aged Pauline, Julia Smith ordered that she removed all makeup, wore conservative skirts & clothes and her hair cropped, to ensure she looked much older than that of the glamorous Shirley Brahms! Here, she looks remarkably like Miss Brahms as that's the same hair style she had back then! :) Thanks for Watching. x
And to think only Ian is still o The Square. I've been to a place called Brit & Chips and I love having a Chippy myself. It's also synonomous in Toronto, Ontario and Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Yes, on a US Soap Opera they wouldn't get together and have a Simple Dish of Fish & Chips. They don't even have scenes where Families have Dinner.
Not on soaps, lol. They all speak English and even hijabs are a rare sight in British soap.
Something that's still as exciting 35 years on, a chippy tea.
Now it's a pleasure to watch the natural script writing.
A family fish and chips supper is a rarity these days due too the prices in the chippy! A long lost era is long gone 😪
When EastEnders was great rest in peace Pauline and Arthur
I don't watch eastenders anymore but I do watch the old repeats on drama channel
Back when it was a soap opera on the REAL Eastend. And not a PC motivated show full of one-dimensional obnoxious character.
Every Friday night having a chippy, cup of tea, those were the days!
Bread and butter!!
£9 for all of that. In 2020 it's £9 for one portion
😂😂😂mad in it!!!
This just proves how much EE has gone down the pan (or down the sink in Arthurs case)!
Abigail Morrison lol 😂😈
The most authentic the show ever got

She still looked attractive though - but in a way that is believable for Pauline.
Yes Michelle, and you're STILL part of the problem in 2017!
alex jones lol 😂😈
Even Pauline can have a laugh

I really like Arthur, I like his mindset and the way he thinks... but he definitely piles all the stress on, that’s why it all got too much for him
£9 for all that now its that much for one fish and chips
Michelle when she didnt bore anyone
I had the hots for Michelle back in the 80's.
Is kathy not having a Gillian Taylforth "sausage" with hair chips 🤔
LOL Arthur
Indeed!
It would be £22 odd
£9 of chips in 1985 would be like £30 now
£40 that lot would have been nowadays - probably dearer if Kath hadnt went for the sausage instead of fish the dirty bitch
