Ben, MS 62 on the large cent was a compromise grade. One or two of the graders didn't like something about the coin. Instead of a details grade like PCGS, they gave it a low mint state grade. Happens all the time. Quarter only a 63 mainly due to lack of full luster. PNG dealer.
Nice. With the exception of the last coin upgrade (congrats!), the others stayed the same grade/designation. I would say that is pretty consistent grading across all three companies (this time). Cheers!
3:30 There are different levels of FH SLQs (which aren't reflected on the holder: they are either labeled FH or not). There is considerable flatness on the head and the shield, though the coin is middle-of-the-road for an FH. There are FH coins which show a lot more detail than that in the head. Full-full head coins are rare and command a large premium, IF you can find one for sale. Coins like that tend to stay impounded in major collections.
I think the 62 was way too low on the Largie, which was the most egregious, followed closely by the SLQ. The others I thought were spot on. The was thinking the “cleaned” Morgan did look it was cleaned. It maybe didn’t leave any cleaned lines on the surface, but there was definitely something amiss with the surface luster.
Nice to see a Braided Hair large cent make an appearance. I see the SLQ and mercury dime as upgrades since you got them out of the ICG holders and NGC gave them basically the same grade. The Morgan does look cleaned to me.
Nice vid! The 1930 Standing Liberty Quarter, in my opinion, just makes FH; the grade of MS63 also fair because the "rivets" on the shield are not fully struck up. Be well! Ed
NIce coins. The Standing Liberty quarter looks like a 64. That Mercury dime is awesome. I like that large cent as well. 62 does seems a grade low for that.
I have a MS 64 FH 1930 quarter in a PCGS holder that really doesn't look any different than that one other than a touch of toning. I love the dime and while I don't have a lot of large cents that one is quite attractive. That crack out went pretty well over all. Thanks for sharing
Thx great 👍 video, the 63 should had been a 64 bummer on the Morgan I have a 1925 D gold indian I want to crack out for that same reason but have been told by 2 lcs's that I shouldn't thx again for a great 👍 video
For the large cent it looks like there was light PVC damage and somebody left it in acetone for too long. I would also like to point out that you can still see some green gunk on the coin, which is probably why NGC gave it a 62.
You lost the + on the merc and very lucky with the large cent most likely was dipped and artificially toned. Those spots on the neck most likely from different metals in the copper alloy reacting when being dipped. The slq is a beauty!!!
I love standing liberty quarters especially the variety one . I have a complete set of them which probably grade fine to AU . When I win the lottery I am going to assemble a complete set of SLQs at MS 65 full head or better.
HI BEN. GOOD CRACK-OUT RESULTS. The Standing Liberty does seem to have some flatness on some of the head detail. Nice that it came back FH. The large cent looks much better than a 62, but what the heck do I know. One thing I know is it has great eye appeal. Overall, you did pretty well with that batch. *TYU*
I have a 1917 T1 in FH but its a beauty and even under 10X magnification I cannot see any contact marks and its got luster all day long cartwheeling and I want to send it in and it should come back way higher but knowing these graders they will get me one way or another and I'm not going to try to submit to get shafted by them. I have had this coin since 1986 and been with me in perfect storage temps and low humidity even in SE TEXAS now so it never toned and kept its natural blast white look and it was given to me by my dad so I know the coin has been in the family since 50s and cared for. They will probably say it was UNC cleaned and take a coin even raw is a 400 dollar coin all day long in 64FH and in 65FH is jumps more then double and mine looks 66FH and make it a 300 dollar coin so it will stay on my family and I will pass it on raw to my son and let him decide to send it it to People Can't Grade Shit or Not Gonna Capsulate and maybe luck out.
I can understand, in thinking a mistake was made in grading, but looking back the information I got when enrolling with NGC, I found in the information on NGC Numeric Grades list, that the definition of MS/PF 70 where it says, "A coin with no post-production imperfections at 5X magnification. So my question is a what magnification does NGC actually use? 5X or 10X or 20X or higher? In the actual grading of a coin. cause is seems to me, that the actual grading has to be done at a magnification higher than 5X to determine the issues or lack of issues of the coin in question.
When I learned , was learning, we only ever used a 5x magnification. I use a 10x today because I feel it suites me better and it definitely works for our TH-cam content .
The can of air thing got me laughing and I though I would share a story. I am kitchen manager and back in the day to have fun with the new servers. We used to ask them very excitedly "Sue, I NEED YOU TO GO GET ME A CAN OF A.I.R REALLY FAST IN DRY STORAGE!!! RUN!!!" They would come back 10 min later only because another server felt bad and told them what was going on! It was mean but also very funny!! Not just for me but the server as well.
Grats on the Large cent. That is a stunning MS63. Oh wait ms62? Guess you have to submit it 5 more times to pay for the MS63+ But still 1 out of 4 is better then the average I see. It has to be hard to have the gut feeling that you know what you are doing better then the third party. Seems like NGC is trying to promote them selves as if more conservative then PCGS now.
I have a 1884 s morgan that i got in an ICG holder that was a 58. I broke it out and now I am wishing I wouldnt have. Im afraid to send it to either PCGS or NGC. UGH!!!! I should have just left it!!
@@TheCoinGeek I'm sorry brotha! I'm desperate! I hope you know 90% of the time I agree with you about the grades and I also hope you know I don't think you should be subject to every commenter's critiques! You are the pro here and you are inspiring a new generation of young numismatists! Thank you!
He did OK. Got at least a crossover of the SLQ, upgrade from cleaned to straight grade on the large cent, and a crossover of the dime, albeit without the +, which is dubious anyway. Given his luck, he'd lose FH on the SLQ and MS64 on the dime.
@@jamesgoss1860 probably made all his money back on the cleaned coin/s that slipped by. Considering cleaned coins are basically worthless to collectors. Feel bad for the person that buys a cleaned coin, at the value of an uncleaned coin. Unfair imo
My (useless) opinion... - The 1894 looks more "over dipped" than cleaned - You probably lost a point on the SLQ because even tho it meets the criteria for FH (three leaves, etc) it's kind of flatly struck - You got shafted on the Large Cent. As others have said here that's a Friday at 5 PM coin. I wish the TPGs would somehow tell you the reasoning for their grades
"Genuine" "Cleaned" therefore "Not Gradable"... Why not "Genuine Cleaned" but " GC" v.f. 45"?? (for example) In my view, I see so many beautiful coins RUINED by that word CLEANED... To which I say, "So What"?? (especially when the human eye cannot detect the cleaning) Leads me to believe that a large part of the start of the grading process is to see "Who wants it graded??"
True collectors NEVER buy cleaned coins, that's why they're not gradable.....numismatic value down the drain. But, coin dealers love them. Lot of money to be made on newer collectors, or people who don't know how to tell a cleaned coin. After seeing the first coin, which was CLEARLY cleaned, and him saying he didn't think it was, I couldn't understand. One other was clearly cleaned as well. To keep submitting cleaned coins in the hopes of it slipping by, should tell you how collectors feel about them, and the difference in value. I have a very old foreign silver coin that's suposed to be worth well over 500....Came sparkling like a diamond....maybe worth 50, because silver is at almost 30. So if you don't mind not seeing an increase in investment, or not even being able to get back what you spent....clean your coins. Just don't sell them as uncleaned, it's extremely unfair imo. So glad I saw this video. Only PCGS for me from now on
ICG's label sucks. Looks like it made in PowerPoint. They should redesign the label and slab to look more professional. Unfortunately that stuff matters. Take design cues from NGC.
wonder how many coins actually exist with people sending in the same coins over and over again trying to get a grade higher.... Destroys the real market.
Ben, you are making excuses for inconsistent grading and attempting to justify these grading companies while disregarding or diminishing the use of artificial intelligence.
MS62 = "Yeah it's definitely UNC, but how nice is it.....oh would you look at the time, it's 5PM"
This makes me feel much better about the ICG coins I still own. Possibly some of them were actually graded accurately 👍
Some great looking coins. Thanks for giving us a peek at them.

The 1930 quarter is one looking beauty man! $300 while spent
That Morgan looks cleaned to me Ben.
PCGS: Cleaned
NGC: Cleaned
Ben: There's no consistency here
NGC has been very strict on their grading! Don’t know if that’s a good thing or bad thing. Love your vid’s Ben!
I agree on the quarter. Should be 64. I disagree on the 50/50 morgan. I think it is more like 80/20, favor to the cleaned side. Nice braided hair.

The large cent neck might be other metal in copper. They could not refine metal that well in 1800s like today. So u get imperfections on surface.

The surface on the merc looks granular in sections...the toning makes it appear that way?.... of course, though, I'm seeing it on a Samsung tablet...

With the shininess combined with the wear on the 1894, my gut says cleaned.
What does wear have to do with cleaning ? With that logic all coins not MS are cleaned
@Malcolm James Why
