Can't really fathom how the touch at 7-10, 8:02 goes to Bazadze.
I mean, what's a properly executed 'make-him-miss-your-blade-and-cut-him-immediately' action if not the one Heathcock is exhibiting here so awesomely?
Well, the ref's call says that he didn't make him miss the blade. It might just be hard to see from the TH-cam video, but I imagine it could be a light tap on the blade after Bazadze misses the intended timing. Which I'm sure we've all had happen before -- sweep for a parry/beat, totally whiff and catch the sabre just barely on the follow-through.
Maybe the referee was watching the side on replay, not the end on version we saw. Presumably there's a noise (Bazadze hit the piste?) and both referees agree with the call of prise-de-fer.
Is it me or does Bazadze control the Allez command by taking so long to be on guard? Watch. He sinks into is on guard and immediately upon his movement stopping Allez is called and he is moving before it finishes
This problem is common where the referee says Pret before both fencers are settled. It allows the fencer who is slower to come engarde to dictate when the referee says Allez. To be correct, the referee should not say Pret before both fencers are engarde and stationary. Then the referee dictates the timing of the Allez.
