Peter Gabriel was inspired to write this song after he saw pictures of destitute families in the dust bowl midwest during the great depression of the 1930's and he was moved by the hopelessness reflected in their eyes. He was first going for an Americana vibe and asked Dolly Parton to sing the duet with him. After she declined, Gabriel asked his good friend Kate Bush to sing it. Producer Daniel Lanios said that when Kate arrived at Gabriel's country studio, everyone felt they were in the presence of genius and that an angel had come down to sing for them. He said the song would have never come together right without Kate's performance. Another interesting bit of trivia, bass player extraordinaire Tony Levin wanted a certain muted bass sound for this song, but he could not get the sound right. He happened to have his baby girl's diaper bag with him in the studio, so he grabbed a diaper and shoved it under his bass strings - which gave him the perfect muted sound he was looking for. This song has been credited by many people for changing their minds about committing suicide or harming themselves (including Elton John, who said this song saved him from drug overdose).

This song describes the past 20 years with my husband. Including some traumatc moments. So when I showed this video to my husband he cried. He got through my stroke with Kate Bushs verses in his head. As an aside you have good taste. You should react to Kate Bush' song the red shoes.

Looking at comments associated with particular video, it's clear that song has been instrumental in saving so many people. I don't know off hand which Kate songs you have reacted to previously but Kate did release a Christmas song called "December Will Be Magic Again". There are so many others, it would be great if you could listen to her albums and share your impressions of them. The one that I play the most is the first one where she got full creative control "The Dreaming" following this she set up her own sound studio for the "Hounds Of Love". But I would recommend starting from the beginning with "The Kick Inside" which had some let's say "interesting" songs and then continuing on in album release order. Anyway hopefully a very Merry Christmas to you and the very best of wishes for the new year, let's hope that it's a better one!

This video, like all PG videos is awesome. Notice how it is done in one shot, with no cuts. The two are standing on a rotating stand that would be turned in order to get the effect of the two of them singing while holding each other.
Also watch the sun in the background, it goes thru an eclipse.
    Try Biko.

They have another song together: Another Day. You can watch the video here: th-cam.com/video/Bvt5YnocRp8/w-d-xo.html
Apart from that I really, really think you need to listen to more Peter Gabriel, because his vocal range is astounding. If you want to listen to VERY different sounds of his vocals I suggest three songs: In Your Eyes, The Drop and one by Genesis when he was their singer, The Battle of Epping Forest, in which he sings performing many different characters, each with their particular accent and way of speaking, it’s fantastic. These are just three examples of the different kind of singing he can do, but so different from one another that these three can give you a general idea of this brilliant artist.

To give you the backstory of this song. First we have to go back to the mid 1970's Great Britain, a new right wing government under the leadership of Margaret Thatchers came to power and the first thing they did was to privatize the industries and sell the lot of them, because it was easier to outsource the materials (Such as metal, coal and Gas) from overseas than to keep the mines open.
But closing the mines meant that millions (Yes, you read that right, MILLIONS) were all of a sudden out of a job. And let's not forget that entire communities were built on the industries and generation on generation was raised on working in those industries, as it was a Father to son passed down occupation. Many of those people took to the streets to protest against their government, many more took to the bottle and other substances and many more took their lives.
Peter Gabriel is not from a working class back ground, in fact, it's quite the opposite, his parents were well off and he was send to prestigious schools. But having done the club circuit fronting Genesis, Gabriel knew that to succeed, you need to put in a LOT of effort and work your hands to the bone. He came across a picture from the 1920's era depression and figured that those people went through the same thing, which is when the idea for the song came around.
Initially he wanted to have Dolly Parton singing it but she declined the offer. But hey, you can't say that Kate Bush did a bad job here.

I remember reading a headline '120,000 out of work', the number of people who lost their jobs from associated industries, like the people who made miners' clothing, boots, hard hats etc. Closing the mines had a knock-on effect on other industries that the tories hadn't accounted for and didn't care about anyway.
