I feel I've learned more in this 18 minute video than I have on my own in the past year (never read anyone discuss the importance of the watercolor bead before). I was ready to pack in the watercolors, so frustrated by my inability, despite watching countless hours of TH-cam videos. Thankfully found your website link in one of your videos and starting again with the basics. I can't believe you're offering this for free. Thank you, thank you, thank you! You've restored my hope!
I just wanted to let you know that I've shared this video a bunch of times on the Watercolor subreddit - this is easily the best tutorial I've seen explaining what Joseph Zbukvic calls "Mr. Bead." Well done Rick! Your videos have been an important part of my watercolor journey. Thank you!
Best tutorial that I’ve ever watched on this topic! Most of tutorials explain this technique on a simple rectangular area. Many thanks for sharing your knowledge and skills for free.
wow! This video was so informative! I've had 4 semester's of W/C class but never has the importance of "how to control the water" explained. I've been trying to understand how to achieve the FUNDAMENTAL of watercolor texture in my paintings, now I at least have the proper instruction on how to practice towards that goal! Thank you Rick!
Oh, my goodness - this has to be the best and clearest teaching of these fundamentals that I've ever come across! If only all Beginner watercolour tuition started like this, so very many people (like me!) wouldn't have given up in frustration! I really can't thank you enough. Your video is greatly appreciated.
Thank you so much for sharing this video!! I never knew how important gravity is! I’m definitely going to practice this technique. I’m sure it will open a whole new dimension to my painting
This is a great series, watched all 24, although left this until last for some reason. You might think that what you are explaining is a basic skill and would be known by someone that has been painting watercolour for sometime. It’s strange how helpful it is to have explained so carefully, what I knew by experience, but never really thought it through like this. It has crystallised my own knowledge/experience and enhanced my skills, thank you.
This is one of the most useful, no-nonsense, to the point watercolour videos I have ever watched. Very useful, insightful and clear. Thank you so much for not adding unnecessary embellishments like a lot of other instructors do.
This is a one of a kind video. Extremely important for all beginners. I have never before seen something like this on TH-cam. Thanks for explaining so lucidily a topic that is hardly ever tackled by any TH-cam artist!
I agree with everything Agnes wrote. My bane has been hard edges, which I think is probably due to the papers (Bee and Legion Stonehenge, each 100% cotton) soaking up too much water too soon. Makes everything, especially greens, look overworked like your third example. Keeping a bead going will be very helpful. Thank you, Rick.
This exercise was amazing and I tried it. I had no idea that the bead of water was so controllable via using gravity. It makes sense but I never saw an exercise like this that made it come home for me. THANKS!
This is the best fundamental watercolor tip i've seen on youtube! Thank you very much for explaining in a logical step by step, structured manner. It makes a world of difference.
How have I missed your videos?! I've been slowly learning Watercolour via TH-cam, books, videos and online classes from independent, established artists. I have regularly viewed artists who share the love and knowledge on TH-cam, but I have NEVER seen your AMAZING narratives and INSPIRATIONAL tutorials and tips. Thank YOU SO MUCH for taking the time to provide such concise, educational content. I can watch your videos and feel inspired and equipped to attempt the exercises you've demonstrated. Ready to PAINT!!! Your negative painting technique is phenomenal! The pieces you create practically FLOAT! So happy you chose to share your abilities with the rest of the world!😊😊❤️❤️🌎🌎🎨🎨🎨🎨
Wow! I painted in watercolour for 20 years and I still learned from this video. Thank you so much for sharing this particular information which is really, so important to successful painting. :)
fantastic demo. I have watched a lot of online tutorials, and this is by far the clearest explanation/demonstration yet. I can't wait to try it. I think I will do in on watercolor cards...ready made background for future needs.
Thank you for this excellent video! You explained something that I've never been taught in classes or through books or videos. Your video explains fundamental techniques in a clear and understandable way.
Excellent instruction! I have had so many challenges with hard edges and blooms, and could not understand why. I've never heard this instruction before, and wonder why such a fundamental concept isn't one of the first things taught! Can't wait to put this into practice, and experience success instead of frustration. Thank you so much!
That's great! I'm glad this video was helpful. Watercolor is a more positive experience when you can get an understanding of a few basic concepts to start. Good luck with your practicing! It will pay off.
I'm just now viewing your channel... Excellent demonstration! This is perhaps the best video I've seen on the importance of the "bead" of paint and gravity. Others have mentioned the bead but often neglect the importance of gravity. I've been a victim of the wall painting method and never realized my mistake until now. I've got to try this exercise myself.
That's great Alan !!! Taking the time to learn a few basic concepts is worth the investment with watercolor. I think some don't and it quickly becomes an uphill battle. Good luck with it and thanks for commenting !!!
You are phenomenal! Someone who understands that some people are looking for clear, concise instruction instead of a pretend best friend:) . So-called "info-tainment" has run so far amuck that it's all entertainment (if you can call these blabber mouths entertaining) and no instruction. Even the few people on TH-cam who know how to paint never get around to it because they're so enthrall with having an audience watching them mug for the camera, gesticulate with their hands or otherwise call a lot of attention to themselves. You are an excellent artist -- very impressive that you are so versatile. I appreciate that you start by talking about the light and the water since that is actually what watercolor is about and if people don't get that they may as well use crayons or oil paints. Love this, thank you so much!! I can't wait to watch them all!! Cheers!
Thank you for all of your wonderful comments! I'm glad you recognize the importance of white and light in watercolor. Your right, it's what makes watercolor unique. I hope you continue to enjoy my videos!
I only wish someone had shown this to me when l first started watercolour painting many years ago. You explain the intricacies of watercolour painting so clearly. Many thanks
As a new painter, this is probably the best instructional video I've found thus far for watercolor. Such concise, simple explanations. I've always painted flat, but I think I'll ask my wife for a table easel for Christmas. :-)
That explanation was so helpful in your first 3 exercises. I have not understood this about controlling the bead of water. I have read at 3-4 books on watercolor and I amazed that none of them really addressed this and explained this this well. Thank you. I would think more teachers or watercolor artists on TH-cam here would discuss this, but I haven't found it. Thank you. I have still to listen to the last 3 exercises.
Thank you ! I appreciate you sharing your comments, and I'm glad you found this helpful. It's a fundamental concept that I feel is important to have understanding of if your going to work in watercolor.
This is a very good video. I love how you make something I always found difficult so simple in such a practical way that I can remember and apply to my art. Thank you!
I am so happy about the results of my practice of this exercise. I worked right along with you and voila! I achieved what I have been yearning for---something that looks like watercolor! I also followed along with your exercise in painting the rocks, and although my rocks turned out very nicely (even my husband said, "that's a keeper!") I didn't feel satisfied that I was catching on to the very purpose of water color. Now I know it is because I was working on a flat surface and now I understand what the water bead is and its purpose! The light went on for me, Rick! Thank you for your excellent tutorials!
Just a super video Rick. I needed that reminder to work on a slight slant. I thought the exercises you did explained things well. Would love for you to do more of these kinds of videos. Thanks.
I can't believe I missed this teaching video! Exactly what I needed to know & taught in a way that makes sense. Now, to go practice :) Thank you for teaching the basics.
Thank you Rick. This is much appreciated. When you get a chance , in one of your videos would you show us the wedge you are using for propping please ?
I recently started to watch a few of your videos and I love the way you explain WHY things happen or don't happen. Even though I've been painting watercolour for a few years now I still found the beginner tips very very helpful. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Rick, thank you very much! My wc paintings - I’m still in a newbee phase - all look like your third exercise, full of hard borders and blossoms. The “bead” concept, as so perfectly explained by you, is a great concept that, I’m sure, is gonna help loads those like me who are starting their voyage in the great universe of watercolours
Rick Surowicz Watercolor It will help a lot because my main problem is that I always get hard edges where I don’t want them. I think it’s a common problem newbies have. I use to paint with my gatorboard kept flat, and now I understand that painting on a flat surface makes things harder. The bead concept will fix that because it’s easy to spot the areas that may end up drying too fast and being helped by gravity for this is a good way.
Loved this. The telly is off, the dinner dishes haven't reached the dishwasher and I am totally engrossed in this video. Thank you for a wonderful addictive and instructive tutorial.
Rick, these are great exercises and tip. I have had this presented in previous lessons in brushstrokes, but it is so good to see this in use by another professional artists.
That was the most valuable lesson that I have ever experienced. I get very emotional about watercolour. I have no idea why but it actually gets me all emotional inside !! Great information and taught in a way that I can appreciate as a beginner. I always find it difficult in mixing enough of a colour to finish the job at hand. Often I add too more water and not enough paint.
Thank you so much for this clear and simple demonstration and explanation. And this is on dry paper, right? Well, obviously. I control where the water goes, rather than wetting the whole sheet and racing to paint before it dries, which I fail at miserably. A year into my watercolor adventure and I have a sensible starting point.
You're correct it's dry. I dry my paper with a hair dryer throughout my painting process also. When the paper is too wet to make the type of mark I want to make or is at risk of getting a backwash I'll stop and dry my paper. I'm sure you've learned a lot along the way in your adventure. Thanks for watching !
I agree with all of these wonderful comments. To test my understanding of this comment I would like to know if you are saying that you dry the sections that you are 'finished' working on?
I’ve really enjoyed watching this vidéo on bead of water. Your explanation are very clear...I like your tone of voice....😘 pleasant to the ears and beautiful to watch 🧐. Next steps for me is the practice of this lesson. Thank you💫
Soooo helpful. Thank you! So the simplicity is to put layer on layer as they dry and make sure you use the beads and gravity. My big mistake was rushing in while the paint was too wet and adding too much detail
Awesome. So inspiring. Learned quite a bit. Gives me much more control and joy. One thing I realize is I was picking scenes that were much too complicated. We have to learn in gradients. So your tutoring does that very well. Been doing watercolor for many years and never learned so much.
I can't paint on a flat surface. When it's on an incline, I know what my paint is going to do and I can control it. I don't have a clue where my paints going when it's flat.

Hi Erica, Thank you for sharing your story and your thoughtful comments! I hope you stay with watercolor!
This tip is huge for a beginner! So obvious with the demonstration, not obvious to a newbie! Thank you!
This video series has been priceless! I'm a self taught "newbie" and your lessons have helped immensely!
I just wanted to let you know that I've shared this video a bunch of times on the Watercolor subreddit - this is easily the best tutorial I've seen explaining what Joseph Zbukvic calls "Mr. Bead."

Wow! This is a great tip! Learning to control the paint is a big challenge for new and intermediate watercolorists. This is a gem!!!! Thank you!!
I learned more in this short video than I did in a 10 week class.
You are an amazing teacher. Thank you, thank you!
Thank you Jane !
I whole-heartedly agree!!
Thankyou, this is excellent, as is your artwork 🤎🤎
wow! This video was so informative! I've had 4 semester's of W/C class but never has the importance of "how to control the water" explained. Great demo--I understand--now to practice :). Thanks Rick!
Thank you for this informative hands on video. I am a visual learner and you are a fantastic teacher. I cannot thank you enough.
Thanks for sharing your comment Janice!
This is one of the most useful, no-nonsense, to the point watercolour videos I have ever watched. Very useful, insightful and clear. Thank you so much for not adding unnecessary embellishments like a lot of other instructors do.
Thank you for explaining the control of watercolor!
One of the best tutorials of this concept I have seen so far!
Thank you Francesco !!!
This is a one of a kind video. Extremely important for all beginners. I have never before seen something like this on TH-cam. Thanks for explaining so lucidily a topic that is hardly ever tackled by any TH-cam artist!
This is so helpful and I’ve begun to identify some of the errors I’ve been making in my own paintings with watercolour :)
Watching your videos is addictive! So much information. Thanks Rick for your fine and eye-opening demonstrations.
Glad you like them Donna ! Thanks !
This video is extremely useful in that it shows something fundamental which is rarely explained in such a clear and convincing way. Well done!
Thank you Agnes!!!

Makes everything, especially greens, look overworked like your third example. Keeping a bead going will be very helpful. Thank you, Rick.
Fr. I've been looking at tutorials for like 3 weeks and no one's explained this until now like it was a trade secret.
Yes, so helpful. Maybe I will eventually not hate 100% cotton paper...
This exercise was amazing and I tried it. I had no idea that the bead of water was so controllable via using gravity. It makes sense but I never saw an exercise like this that made it come home for me. THANKS!

Another valuable lesson and you explained and illustrated it so well.
Thank you!
💖 such an important lesson that never is taught
the most clear tutorial on this topic I have every viewed, it is great.
Thank you ! Very glad it's helpful.
You are a great teacher. This was very helpful to me in getting an overview of the differences. Thank you so much. I understand it now😀👍👍👍
Thank you Maribel !!!

Thanks for commenting Marie ! I hope you find them helpful !
Loved this. The telly is off, the dinner dishes haven't reached the dishwasher and I am totally engrossed in this video. Thank you for a wonderful addictive and instructive tutorial.
Thanks for the great comment Helen !!!
Thank you Rick. I live in an area where there are no teachers, and finding your space on TH-cam has really been a learning experience. Keep going!
Thank you for sharing Nancy ! It's one of the great things about being able to connect with the internet.
Good idea to put two colors to see how it works in a wet surface. Good teacher
Rick, these are great exercises and tip. I have had this presented in previous lessons in brushstrokes, but it is so good to see this in use by another professional artists.
I feel it's very important to understand this concept.
That was the most valuable lesson that I have ever experienced. I get very emotional about watercolour. I have no idea why but it actually gets me all emotional inside !! Now through your patient lessons, I am beginning to understand so much more about how to work WITH the watercolour. Thank you so much for your patience in your videos and the pace at which you speak and details of how you explain everything in logical layman's terms. You are a treasure. Your other tips videos are on my immediate agenda. I will be living on a boat for quite a while with limited space ( small catamaran hull )and and I will be taking my painting supplies and doing watercolour paintings are my goal. Can you offer any advice as far as dealing with the salty air etc? Any advice is most appreciated.
Catherine
Great information and taught in a way that I can appreciate as a beginner. I always find it difficult in mixing enough of a colour to finish the job at hand. Often I add too more water and not enough paint.
Thanks Maggie!
Great job. I loved this video. Very useful techniques for a beginner.
Glad this is helpful David !
Thank you, Rick, this was wonderful! You are a wonderful teacher, thank you for always sharing your talent:-)
Another great video, Rick.
What a great lesson! Thanks!
Great video Rick. Thanks.
Loved the tutorial and learnt so much from it. You are a great teacher. Thank you.
Thank you. I'm glad you found it helpful.
Really an awesome instruction! I have been real intimidated until now! I am so excited.
Thanks for commenting! I'm glad you enjoyed this.
Best watercolor video I have ever seen. Very informative... Thank you very much...You are very kind..
Thank you. I'm glad it is helpful.
This is the best video I've seen about controlling water. Thank you.
Thanks Joanna!
Excellent video - thanks so much!
Love the Maine scenes! Thank you for these very helpful video lessons. Now I know to elevate my paper~! No one ever mentioned that before....
I'm glad this was helpful!
Thank you ! A very helpful tutorial . I knew about the bead but never really understood the how!
I'm glad this was helpful!
So much to learn; so pleased to have found your videos.
I agree with all of these wonderful comments. To test my understanding of this comment I would like to know if you are saying that you dry the sections that you are 'finished' working on?
Just stumbled on this video. Wow, it was REALLY helpful, and I learned SOOOO much! Thank you Rick, for this really well taught lesson.
That's Great!
Thank you. Great exercises. Helpful.
Thanks Rita!
So helpful! Thank you for these great tips!
Very methodical, excellent lesson. Thank you.
Thanks for sharing your skill and knowledge. I hope you make a fortune!
I’ve really enjoyed watching this vidéo on bead of water. Your explanation are very clear...I like your tone of voice....😘 pleasant to the ears and beautiful to watch 🧐. Next steps for me is the practice of this lesson. Thank you💫
Thanks for the great comments Jacinthe !
Soooo helpful. Thank you! So the simplicity is to put layer on layer as they dry and make sure you use the beads and gravity. My big mistake was rushing in while the paint was too wet and adding too much detail
I think you're on the right path.
Yes indeed. Thank you. What makes an artist feel incompetent and lacking in talent is simply no training in basics.
Thank you that makes everything come together, very well done.
Thanks Joan!!!
Thank you for helping me understand what I was doing wrong!
I'm glad this was helpful!
Sooo very helpful,! Thank you!!
Thanks Rick - really good to know - well done.
Awesome. So inspiring. Learned quite a bit. Gives me much more control and joy. One thing I realize is I was picking scenes that were much too complicated. We have to learn in gradients. So your tutoring does that very well. Been doing watercolor for many years and never learned so much.
That's super Lucille !
Thanks :) Will keep watching!
Thank you!!! You are fabulously talented and a great teacher. I am learning so many things about techniques.
That's great Margaret ! I appreciate your comment !
very nice tutorial, cleared explaination
You teach very valuable skills in a clear understandable manner. Gives me a reason not to paint on a flat surface which I tend to revert to.
I can't paint on a flat surface. When it's on an incline, I know what my paint is going to do and I can control it. I don't have a clue where my paints going when it's flat.
Very informative exercise for beginners. Thanks a lot.
I'm glad it is helpful.
This video is so very helpful!!!! Thank you so very much for sharing this!!!!
I'm glad this was helpful !
Hands down the best tutorial for a newbie watercolorist LOL
Thank you!
Thank You! Im brand new to painting. This is great practice!
Thanks for commenting!!!
Excellent and very educational. I learned a lot.
Thank you Kim !
OMG. This is perfect!!! Thank you!
Thank you so much, you have made what I thought impossible for me very achievable.
Excellent Larraine ! I'm glad this was helpful. I wish you continued success with your painting !!!
