As someone who has read about funny weird enemies on Mario Wiki for 13 years, this video resonated with me in a way almost nothing I’ve ever seen has. Thank you so much for highlighting the joy found in bizarre one-off Mario enemy variations :)
I mean, if you love this and haven't already watched it you definitely should watch BDG's Unraveled on Bowser's Military Hierarchy, it's worth the price of admission just to listen to him say all the funny names
An important distinction between the Tanoombas and Tail Goombas is that the Tail Goombas do not use shapeshifting (cf. the distinction between the Tanooki Suit and the Super Leaf in SMB3).
I think Goombules from Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story are pretty neat. Starlow describes them as amoeba like, suggesting that Bowser has a bunch of single celled organisms shaped like Goombas living inside of him
Bowser’s internals are super wack already, man has pipes that teleport to the overworld in him. I do like Goombules tho, but I think my favourite enemy from Inside Story has to be the Stonk.
@@jamietheshaymin9290 "man has pipes that teleport to the overworld in him" Haven't played the game since a lot of time ago, but weren't those there because he ate them?
@@JoziGlitzh It's still wack because those pipes are wireless. I've always thought that those pipes connect underground and that's why we can't see the rest of the pipe most of the time. BiS has made me rethink the structure of pipes in the mario series.
@@olekomega1680 yeah no man warp pipes are wild. Their existence and function in BiS also implies that they can alter the sizes of creatures and items that travel through them, since Mario and Luigi have to be tiny in order to enter Bowser but are shown to be their normal heights when outside of him.
I mean they should be, not just because it makes sense, but because the Japanese versions essentially are: The Goomba is called Kuribo The Galoomba is called Kuribon The Goobrat is called Kakibo The Goombud is called Kakibon
Thank you for the Goomba information, I would like to also add Hyper Goombas, which act like normal Goombas except they can charge up for a second to deal a ton of damage, and because of my ADHD I share this ability
i wanted to focus on types/species of Goombas, not characters. there's tonssss of one-off characters, especially in like Paper Mario games, so i thought it was more interesting when talking about interesting species, because it applies to a lot of Goombas and not just one!
@@HEYimHeroic ye, Like king Goomba, Red and Blue, Spiked, ice Goomba (idk if that was their actual names however) There is a lot more, but these are the ones worth noting.... although it may be free content for another video to round up the other less common ones
my favorite goomba variations are prolly the pile-driver micro goomba, cus they have a fun name, the mad red paragoomba because they not only had to specify that it is angry but also that it is red, and the big tail goomba, for having more appearances than regular tail goomba. Also, not everything in the mario universe that starts with para has wings; there is also the parabomb, which is a bob-omb with a parachute and the parachute galoomba (originally known as paragoomba), which is a galoomba with a parachute. joke about angels totally invalidated lol :P
The difference between Tanoombas and Tail Goombas is actually that Tanoombas are genuine Tanuki Goomba ( a different goomba type) while Tail Goombas are described correctly. Any RPG unique Goomba is its own goomba species.
If you promise to make this a series, looking into really weird and obscure sub-enemy classes i will subscribe in a heartbeat! I need more of this mainlined into me immediately!
Idk if they really count as a species but I'd like to mention the Goombas from All Night Nippon Super Mario Bros., which were redesigned as caricatures of a DJ from a Japanese radio show
And then there's the time where they just outright replaced Goombas with Strollin' Stus in Super Mario Sunshine. Also, I remember there was a point in history where parts of the Mario community referred to Galoombas as "Goombobs", after the Galoomba character in Mario Party Advance. That pretty much faded after Super Mario 3D World came out though.
If paragoombas and paratroopas are just a regular thing with wings, does that imply that birds are actually weird little feather beans with a beak with some of them getting wings?
4:23. I can easily explain this, a very important thing to note is when these enemies first appeared and where they came from. the Tanoomba is from the Mario & Luigi games. The tail goomba is from the Super Mario games. Two different universes, and thus can be explained how they look different/were named differently. and even if you think there are not different Mario universes, and every single Mario game is 100% canon, like other people said, Tanoomba uses the shapeshifting powers while tail goombas really only have a tail, which is a major difference.
but then big tail goombas started appearing in the m&l remake's sub-games like a lot. tho, they aren't really tail goombas, they're *big* tail goombas.
I've always had a fascination with one-off weird and redundant Mario enemies and how they all relate to each other. this is great, id love to see more of these.

It’s interesting that variations on Goombas always existed since their first game, since SMB had Gloombas in underground levels and even some grey Goombas in castles, I think.
I really loved this video! I like when someone takes a pretty niche comments (ie, variants of goomba) and makes a funny little video all about it. You did a great job!
Never realized just how many Goomba subspecies/rare species and variants there are. Hoping to see a new one appear in whatever the next mario adventure game will be.
I love the Goombud. I think that the Japanese name was more similar to Galoombrat but Goombud plays off of the fact that they clearly have some minor plant themes. That with their cute design and most interesting gameplay (since they're a Galoomba who you don't have to cage in to keep them from walking off ledges), they're the best Goomba variation by far. Chuboomba DOES go hard, though, and Rhinestone Goombas are legendary.
When I was a kid, I actually printed out every single Goomba article on the Super Mario Wiki and made a book from them. This video brings me great joy.
I think some of these different "species" of goombas aren't actually different species, but just serve a different role in the bowser army. Like there are certain goombas that are classified as "innertube goombas" because it is their job to defeat mario by piloting an innertube
