    I have owned a 02 WRX for 13 years. I bought a factory rep WRX with 10k miles and now have 128k and going strong. It is my everyday car that I drove to work before I retired. I live in the crowed southeast portion of Pennsylvania. My car is box stock but with automatic transmission that makes it easy to drive in heavy traffic. My wife and I have been on 2000 mile trips with no problems. I have owned a Fiat 124 coupe, 1970 Lotus Elan, 1970 Alfa 1750 GTV, 1979 Alfetta sedan and this car is by far the most reliable. The Lotus was prone to self disassembly and I dropped parts all over the road. The Alfas succumbed to road rot from the salt in winter. The WRX shows no rust. The only problems I have had is a cracked radiator and leaky valve cover gaskets. The Subaru factory mechanic I use has a 02 WRX which he says is the best one made. He cautioned that a lot of head gaskets are blown by drivers not using premium gas and horsing around with cold oil.
    I was thinking about getting a different car. I am 72 years old with a bad heart. I was interested in getting a "fun" car which will probably be the last one I buy. But after looking at your review, I think I will keep the car I have. Now I am looking at Cobb stuff for a little "fun".

      +Lee Sumner I am happy you enjoyed my review. And I got to tell you, your comment is one of the best I have ever had. It genuinely made my day!

      YES! keep it! I'm the second owner of my wrx. Got if from the guy at around 168,000 miles. currently it has 199,700 miles on it! so after this week it will have 200k. Although I've only had it for a little over 2.5 years, i still love the car!

      Lee Sumner Hi Lee . Thinking of buying a wrx 2002 automatic. cos I drive in town are they any good Japanese import. am I crazy. Barry

      Hi Barry. The car is a blast around town. It is easy to drive in stop-and-go traffic as well as the highway. It is a little slow off the line but once moving, it goes! I average about 20 MPG in town and 27 on the road if I keep a light foot. I now have 138K and am now at Stage 1+ Cobb stage. That made a big difference in performance and mileage. Remember to use only 91 or better octane gas and don't horse it around until it is fully warmed up.

    What a unicorn of a bugeye. Hero color, factory engine, factory exhaust, factory ride height. Must have been an awesome experience to drive that time machine!!!

    Loved watching this. I recently purchased an 02 Bugeye myself with just a hair over 64,000 miles on it. It's far from stock, but the previous owner took very good care of it and it came with a complete maintenance history. Favorite car I've ever driven.

    My stock 02 is still going after 200k miles. Tough little car. Mines not as prestine as this example. That blue is immaculate.

    • @TheDutchTexan
      @TheDutchTexan  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +PistnRods it is the best color on those cars too IMHO! Although I could go for a silver metallic one as well. But, as I said in the video... Try and find one that hasn't been hacked up.

    I bought a 02 WRX stock with 92k miles last year and it costed me $10k. Had only 1 owner before me and he really took great care of it. No accidents either.

    Good review...I own an Aspen White MY01 Australian delivered version of this car that has just clocked over 100,000kms (60,000 miles). It is every bit as tidy as this car but was bog stock when I bought it and was very ordinary performance wise. They need some basic performance mods to make them perform the way they should. You don't need to go crazy on them just some simple bolt on mods to make them come to life. One major problem they had was a catalytic convertor installed in the up pipe before the turbo. That was deleted on the later models (and mine now also). I fitted an STI VF34 ball bearing turbo, 3" turbo back exhaust, ecutek tune (to run on 98 octane fuel), high volume fuel pump, 20 psi boost, modified air box, BMC air filter, silicone intake hoses, STI intercooler water sprayer system, GFB blow off valve and a slightly larger MRT bonnet scoop. It may sound like a lot of mucking around but by doing this you can still have a stock looking car but have the performance and sound it deserves.

    • @TheDutchTexan
      @TheDutchTexan  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Brett Watson-Will yup, if it was mine it would have been BPU already! The unequal header impreza's just BEG for an exhaust bare minimum!

    It's hard being a Subaru enthusiast in Texas seeing how every Subaru here holds there value like crazy!
    When I went to visit Colorado it was like STi central they were going for as low 8K over there!

      @TheDutchTexan  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Like the way you p[resented the WRX. Good for you that you know better than to launch that car. Its a rally car, not a drag car.
    Good looking camera angles. And you were able to show how much fun there cars are to drive. They are extremely fun on dirt roads in 3rd gear.
    We all knew about the WRX. Thats how it ended up selling here. A lot of Americans wanted one.

    • @TheDutchTexan
      @TheDutchTexan  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I knew first hand because I used to hang with the street-racing crowd back in the Netherlands. The leader of the group had a white 2002. It ended up with transmission issues. It sounded and looked great however!

    Another excellent car review! Nothing against the current generation Subarus but those early 2000s Subarus have quite a lot of charm and character all around. The vehicle design is just likeable.

    • @TheDutchTexan
      @TheDutchTexan  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +petezahut93 agreed! And then there is the fact that this one is the "origin" model for the USA!

    They are absolute fantastic cars, I have a wrx turbo 2005 on my drive. Look after it and it will be fine. Service every 5000 miles. Mine is 100 % original, my old subaru impreza had 158k on the clock drove really well. My friend has a Ferrari and he says my subaru sounds so good. 4 doors and a great size boot, you can't get better

    • @TheDutchTexan
      @TheDutchTexan  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The new WRX's lost some of that with the ELH's. But they got more power out of it so there is that. I still like the ULH's a lot better. Sound is pretty important for a car IMHO.

  • @ITUMBLE4U
    @ITUMBLE4U 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My 2002 WRX just went over 100K...plan on driving it for another 100K. Stock is all I ever needed to enjoy driving. One clutch, one radiator and belts...and Pennzoil synthetic every 4-5 K miles. Put three sets of tires on so far. Thanks for the nice video review...you should try some harder cornering to really appreciate it.

    • @TheDutchTexan
      @TheDutchTexan  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +ITUMBLE4U if it was my own car... well... You would already know I would go flat out! (and it would have an exhaust, tune and that STi wing) I respect the fact that I am not in my own car, and won't do anything that the owner won't let me do.
      It was fun to drive without even touching the limit, and I hope to get to review an earlier STi down the line to compare the two.

  • @Kokes402
    @Kokes402 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I just picked up a bone stock 02 wrx last year with 27k miles. Defiantly paid a premium for it being stock with low miles. I couldn't resist throwing a turboback, uppipe and a tune on it shortly afterwards. It may have lost some value but you cant beat the boxer rumble! I have a blast driving it everyday.

    • @TheDutchTexan
      @TheDutchTexan  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Rick Olsen no judging from me. I would have done the same thing! That boxer sound! I hope to get to review a tuned one down the line. I want exhaust cam on one of those BAAAAAD!

    As a side note, the stock USDM STIs have never had forged pistons. They have hypereutetic cast pistons which wear nicely but will not be as durable under detonation.

    • @TheDutchTexan
      @TheDutchTexan  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +zutekeela I totally agree. Although the new STi is a stunner too, the older cars just add emotion to the mix. And that goes for just about any old car (especially one with a performance pedigree).

    Looking at a 02 wrx hatch tomorrow. I hope he entertains my offer. Is it just me, or does anybody else think the prices on Subarus are ridiculous. I can't help but feel that way after searching for months and months. lol

    • @TheDutchTexan
      @TheDutchTexan  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +goodluckwithallthat they are way up there, but with good reason. They last a long time if you take care of them and they are very nice cars to drive. And the older ones start to look very classic compared to the newer ones. It's like MKIV supra's. You can't even think MKIV for less than 10 grand anymore. And I include the NA automatics...

    • @TheDutchTexan

      +MD46ter 202k miles is a lot. If you can I would have it inspected at a Subaru dealership (pre purchase inspection).

    • @MD46ter
      @MD46ter 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      But should i get a subaru for a first car is it reliable?

    • @TheDutchTexan
      @TheDutchTexan  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      MD46ter stock ones regularly go over 200k miles and they maintain value better than other cars (which also means that they are more expensive to buy second hand).
      But higher mileage cars come with high mileage problems, that is why I advocate a pre purchase inspection. It might cost you a little, but it is no where near the cost of having a major problem.

    • @TheDutchTexan
      @TheDutchTexan  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The regular impreza does indeed not have a turbo at this time. When "WRX" or "STi" is on the trunk lid it is indeed turbocharged! (Unless someone is putting badges on a vanilla Impreza and passes it off as WRX or STi or debadges the car)

    Great review! The car looks and sounds amazing. Do you think it is worth it? I am a college student and I am looking for a daily driver that is fun and reliable. I have seen nothing but good reviews about this car on Edmund's. However, I have read some horror stories about the transmission and blown engines. Your story about the friend in Switzerland confirmed the issues regarding the transmission. I do NOT plan to launch the car period. On the other hand, I do plan to accelerate like you did in the review. Watching this review gives me hope about the WRX. Money is not an issue since I do work, but I do not want to spend more than I have to in the long-run. Also, I have had a 2001 Toyota Corolla that the previous owner neglected, abused and did not care about but it still turns on and drives. My time is limited with the Corolla since the tags will expire in three months. I created a channel to contact you and see if anyone in the comments has any information. Keep up the videos and I hope you get back to me soon.
    Thank you in advance!

      +Cesar Luna what you need to realize is that many people do not leave them stock. You really want to find something like this car. A unicorn. One that has not been modified. Low miles would be nice too. But, as any car over a decade old there will be issues that will need fixing. Clutch work, hoses get brittle and need replacing that kind of stuff. It has been utterly reliable for the owner, and they still command a premium. If it has been abused by the previous owner you're up the proverbial creek. The engine seems to be the last of your problems if it's stock. The trans is the first to give.

      The headers are already UL, the only 2 things I would do is the STI wing and an axle back with perhaps a nice baseline tune to get a little extra power. This is a cream-puff that the owner will keep stock forever though!
