I really don't understand how some still dismiss space exploration as not worthwhile; we're just so caught up in our own petty affairs that we miss the big picture. Living out our entire existence on this rock until we meet our demise, either by our own hand or by some act of nature, would be so unfortunate given our potential for greatness.
samrulz7 i can only imagine what else may be out there, all you can do is enjoy life while it lasts. And spend every moment in the present so you dont miss a second
Anthony Serocco Please stop projecting your philosophy onto the rest of humanity. If our nature was so strongly oriented toward self-destruction or self-sabotage there would be no way we've managed to make it 66 years without a nuclear weapon being used on another nation even with situations like India/Pakistan and NATO/USSR where these nations and alliances were at each other's throats.
+samrulz7 I totally agree, I mean what could possibly be more interesting and exciting than finding out about space and it's incomprehensible brilliance. Although maybe it is best that this study is confined to a select few, there is no doubt that some won't be able to handle it as it may make their human lives seem pointless and could lead to people not being able to function in daily lives.
+Gameboy1998BETA2 He's also putting forward a view that's still a possibility, I mean there are still numerous stockpiles of nuclear and other civilization-ending weapons across the world and people willing to use them.
Meanwhile a lot of intelligence analysts are saying they have never seen the world so unstable, in addition to all the other global problems. Let's survive this one, eh?
Carl Sagan is truly one of a kind. Such an inspiring, intelligent, humble human being is able to fill complete strangers with wonder and awe. He is immortalized in the works he left behind.
***** He lives on in his students and the way they continue to influence the world. I'm grateful that today's generation will grow up with heroes like Neil deGrasse Tyson to look up to and inspire them in their pursuit of truth.
Yes and I would love that.... but imagine probing the mind of the man who brought out that bursting enthusiasm that Neil has. People like him should be president! He's the type to write a constitution and you wouldn't even need to check it to see if it was fair.
Carl Sagan has a knack for reducing a grown man to tears with the eloquence, power and poetic truth in his words. After every speech I've heard from this man I get a lump in my throat. He was truly remarkable. An inspiration for all of humanity. He maybe gone from us but his work and legacy will endure for generations. We will never forget Carl Sagan.
3:36 That truly is a depressing statistic. When those figures are reversed, then we will know that we are emotionally mature enough as a species to venture into the great unknown.
I'm sad I was never alive at the same time he was and that he was gone much too soon, while Carl is simply irreplaceable, i am thankful we also have Neil Tyson in our time.
I watch this at least once a day and not only does it never get old but it is incredibly inspiring. Thank you so much Carl for being much more pastionate about what might be than anyone else. R.I.P
Carl has a masterful control of the spoken word. So eloquent. So much more intelligent than most of us can imagine. So unique. Captivating. And sorely missed on this planet. Thankful to be alive in his timeframe to see and hear his wisdom. Thanks Carl.
Just saw the netflix teaser for 'The Three Body Problem', with Carl Sagan's voiceover. The narration, combined with the storyline from rhe novel, really sends shivers down your spine.
You know the question people occasionally ask of who you would pick to travel back in time and have a conversation with if it was possible? Sagan is definitely up there near the top for me. Just because he has had probably the biggest positive impact on my life and millions of others around my age. Plus, it would be incredible to have the opportunity to explain to him the J.W.S.T and inform him on everything he missed. I feel like we would owe him that for inspiring so many people to reach for the stars and think critically about the world around them.
That "Wipe themselves out" part sent a chill down my spine... I believe its time for us to unite as a species and realize our true potential, before its too late
Unbearably beautiful: this moved me to tears: I've heard these words before of course. But so so moving, so wonderful such effort and skill has been put to underpin them with these modern images and music. I think Sagan and Feynman will be being listened to in a 1000 years, as what they say is so profound, eloquent and poetic. thank you.
Happy Birthday Mr. Sagan. You are seriously an inspiration and a man who will be greatly missed and greatly needed. More minds like yours should be here. Rip for billions and billions of years.
Carl isn't really gone. He will live on in the minds and hearts of the intellectually curious. His books and videos are a treasure which will continue to inspire future thinkers for generations to come.
Lately ive been fed up with society, ready to lose all hope and crawl into a corner. Then i listened to some sagan. Inspirational- he continues to affect me in a deeply positive way. Wish i couldve met him.
It still blows me away every time I remember that Cosmos: A Personal Voyage is over 30 years old and yet was created with such forward thinking that with only minor adjustments is completely accurate today. Such forward thinking is inspirational.
2:11 has to be my favourite part of this episode. The idea that there might be other forms of life out there, just as curious as ourselves, streaching out into the depths of space, looking for each other.
45k subs. This fact alone decimates my hope that Carl's message is ringing loud enough to be heard. In my mind, Sagan stands alone as the most consequential human being ever born. If we do wipe ourselves out, the Voyager probes will be the only evidence that we ever existed at all.
Man I am really happy that I stumbled onto this video. Thanks so much for this post! I wish more people could spend their time on TH-cam searching for eye opening videos like Carl's. If only Carl could live in a time when we did encounter intelligent life, he would have most surely been the Ambassador for planet earth. RIP.

This gave me goosbumps! The editing here is excellent, it does nothing but enhance Sagan's words. Excellent work!! Hopefully we won't kill ourselves before we can reach out potential in the cosmos.

When Carl Sagan says, "Life looks for Life" I tear up a little because of how true it is, all we want to do is find something like us, a sentient, technological civilization. Life itself is amazing, sentient life even more so, and a life sustaining planet that is both beautiful & diverse, such as ours, is something we should cherish dearly. Once our species as a whole begins to truly respect life & our amazing planet, can we venture toward the stars. It will come, we're..an adaptable species..
I've always been a fan of Dr. Sagan's, and this video does him and his message tremendous justice. Let us continue to look and reach out, so that we may as a species grow beyond our imaginations and honor Dr. Sagan's memory.

Shivers still run down my spine when I hear 'Maybe civilizations arise all the time but wipe themselves out as soon as they're able'
I think this is Carl Sagan's take on the Fermi Paradox. With the civilization part being one the theories that tries to explain the paradox.
