Wave Ceiling Keeps Outdoor Spaces Cool Without Fans

  • K-Studio is an architecture firm in Greece that designed a wave ceiling for Barbouni, a restaurant in Costa Navarino. The ceiling cools down the space by providing shade and helping the cool air circulate through the space. The design concept of the entire space is meant to be removable and sustainable.

    *Let me tell you a secret. It's not the ceiling that makes the space cooler, it's the wind and the open space. It's called ventilation.*

      The shade provides the cooling.
      The wind ventilation is there either way.

    Eons ago, I saw a video clip on panels of fabric on an indoor ceiling. You touched one then it was like a domino effect for the other panels to 'wave'. It was meant for cooling/ventilation. Obviously, you wouldn't want to have to touch it every 5 minutes but once every hour to freshen a room is doable. I believe it was a Japanese design. I have been searching for years to find it. (This seems like a good place to post with the hope someone else has heard/seen this). Cheers

    I noticed a lot of people commenting the ceiling is redundant on an open space near the sea.
    Well... I thought it too, but as a brazilian I can tell you that it doesn't matter much if a public space is an open place with a roof, it can still get warm as if there were no roof at all, and doesn't matter if it's sunny, the inside could still look dark or tainted by the color of the roof if it's translucent, and the people on the edge of the space gets the fresh air while the people on the center or on the escaping side of the wind gotta deal with strangers' aromas and heated air.
    Maybe it works by screening the sun just enough as a tree top, while the sway cools down the fabric even on the center, while the open top allows for light to reach everywhere and the heat to escape up instead of being contained. If it works like that, this design is genius for a tropical climate.
    Untill it rains

      Você sabe como é feito isso com esse efeito?

    • @ViniSocramSaint
      @ViniSocramSaint ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JeffersonXacall Não sei se entendi o que referencia, então vou dar meu melhor pra explicar meu ponto leigo inteiro:
      Os panos e as tariscas fazem sombra. Mesmo que não se conectem em um teto completo, bloqueiam bastante a luz direta, deixando passar a indireta.
      O movimento dos panos - não necessariamente a ondulação, mas qualquer movimento - faz os panos perderem a "aura de ar quente", menos a camada imediatamente tocando o pano, que é trocada por ar novo na direção do movimento, além de que o próprio movimento faz os panos esfriarem. Isso é um conceito de dinâmica de fluidos que aprendi de passagem alguns anos atrás mas esqueci quase tudo com o tempo. É por causa disso - mais a expansão de fluídos - que assoprar esfria a comida enquanto que sugar o ar esfria a comida dentro da boca e abanar melhora o calor mesmo que todo o ar ao nosso redor seja quente. Por fim, ar quente se expande por receber mais energia que atiça mais as moléculas, isso faz o ar quente ser menos denso que o resto, subindo pro teto. O teto tendo valas deixa o ar quente escapar pra cima. Isso tudo levaria ao design desse "teto" no vídeo ser genioso

      the most sound produced by a flapping fabric is at the end. and they installed it quite close to each other so that will reduce the wildness of the flaps. plus sea breeze is noisy as it is, the area is open so u will hear more sea breeze than the slight flapping sound produced by those fabrics. i think XD
