  • Today, we shall continue our expedition along the route of the once illustrious Great Central Railway. Our journey shall commence from Station Road, situated in Haydock, where the erstwhile Haydock Railway Station stood. From there, we shall trace the path of the GCR railway up to Haydock Racecourse, observing the remnants of the railway infrastructure. Regrettably, not much remains from this juncture, but we have discovered some intriguing artefacts. At certain points, we encountered some challenges in maintaining our course, but we trust that you shall relish this expedition, nonetheless.
    On this occasion, my esteemed colleague accompanied me on this journey and expounded on the railway's pivotal role during World War II.
    We trust that you have found this video to be engaging. If that is the case, we kindly request that you leave a like and subscribe to our channel, as this would significantly aid in expanding our reach to individuals such as yourself.

      Hi thank you very much I'mso glad that you enjoyed this video. I love our towns history and so often it is forgotten including this very railway. My mission is try to keep this very important part of our history alive by documenting the GCR railway. I'm nearly 40 now so not that young so much has changed in such a short space of time. Thank you for reaching out I truly appreciate that' I do hope to meet up with a few people one day that worked or remembers the GCR it would be amazing to learn more.
      Unfortunately I so often hear that today's generation isn't taught about things like the GCR and such' it's a great shame that our rich towns history is slowly fading away. So my mission is to do my part in rediscovering our history and keeping that alive in any way I can.

    This is a slightly different type of video. Although I'm still documenting the GCR railway I have blended some of the interesting and fun bits of the journey including some of the issues we had along the way.

    Most of the tunnel under the M6 is still in situ and once your crossed the motorway bridge, you can follow the alignment back to Haydock, a path through the industrial site roughly follows the railway alignment back to the park.

      Hi Nick Melling thank you for that information. I would have gone further but it looked way too overgrown also didn't look like there was any remains of the railway there. I'll have to go back soon and take a proper look probably when there's less foliage so I can see more. I know they've removed a lot of what was there and I've been told that you can't get through the bridges under the M6. Like I've mentioned I'll need to go back sometime soon and take a proper look around the area.

      @@exploringwithjb Yes worth checking out the west end of the tunnel under the M6, you can then roughly follow the alignment actually through the industrial estate through some very narrow paths between the various warehouses. Heres our take on it, th-cam.com/video/XFOqmdp9Pco/w-d-xo.html

    the public footpath next to Byrchall High is in way worse condition these days. The path across the motorway could take you all the way to Haydock Lane and adjacent to the old Gerrard family estate. I went to Ashton Grammar as it was in 1974-1979, the railway next to the school was used to transport German POW's in WW2, the school is on a POW site. In 1978 the track to the Shell Oil storage depot was still in use. One unfortunate day May 18 1978 I thought it would be a great idea to ride one of the oil trains from Golborne back to the school, sadly it was not to be and I became an above knee amputee that day. I took a walk around the area on May 18 2018, much overgrown now, but the old line is still in place further towards Golborne I believe.

      Hi very sorry to here about your accident' when we were young we all did things we regret. The walkways should be maintained so people can walk these historic trails.

      Holy Hell Ian, I remember that well, was it near the Navvy Steps? About the same time, someone got badly burned by the overhead lines at the Bonk Bridge, and a local lad had his foot ran over by a 16ton coal wagon in the pit sidings.

    The old track bed for this line runs under the east lancs road starting at the lyme wood pub under the east lancs through where sains burys is now and into ashton station which was before haydock park station as haydock park was only used on race days

    • @exploringwithjb
      @exploringwithjb  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi yes I will be covering Ashton railway station in a upcoming video. I know that the railway ran under the east lancs but unfortunately it was way overgrown. I also mentioned in the comments that a mistake had taken place after noticing the M6 marker was off I hadn't noticed it until later. When it comes to Haydock Park Railway station I did mention in this video that it was only used on race days. I also gave reference to Ashton station as well.
      Thank you for your information I appreciate that very much and I will be doing a follow-up video of this very soon so any mistakes made will be rectified. I haven't been doing these videos that long so I make little mistakes here and there it's all part of learning for me. And I truly appreciate all positive feedback from you guys so thank you for sharing your thoughts and opinions with me.

    I've just noticed a problem the M6 marker at 8:41 has mistakenly placed on the East Lancashire Road lol thankfully you can still see were the M6 motorway is located on the map so it's not a major issue I apologise if it causes any confusion
