  • In this video, I'll be exploring the Wood Pit site in Haydock. Since I had limited time, my goal was to navigate through the woods swiftly and find the railway bridge I had heard about, as well as locate the shafts.
It's worth mentioning that I have plans to revisit this site soon for a more thorough exploration. I can't wait to uncover the fascinating story behind the Wood Pit and share it with you.
Interestingly, on my way back home, I had a surprise encounter with my friend who was flying his plane. Towards the end of the video, you'll get a sneak peek of this unexpected meeting. Enjoy!

Hope you enjoy this little exploration around Haydock Wood Pit. I will be returning very soon to do a full exploration of this area to see what hidden gems we can find, including climbing into the railway tunnel.

Hi, I worked at Wood pit from the age of 16 until closure in 1971 when I moved to Parkside. Last week I took a look around the site and it certainly brought back memories for me. There were in fact 4 shafts, only 3 of them having headgears when I was there. The 2 shafts in your video are no's 2 & 3. The one closest to Vista road is no. 3 the upcast shaft and the one with the Coal authority warning sign is no.2. The workings accessed by this shaft were worked out but the shaft was maintained for emergency is case of an incident in no.4 shaft. I only existed via this shaft once. No.4 shaft can be found near the landfill gas plant to the south of the other shafts, I believe this shaft was sunk in the 1940's and gave access to various seams including Wigan 4', Higher Florida and Trencerbone where I spent most of my time underground. I did locate no. 1 shaft in the late 60's and it consisted of a circular brick wall with no cap, no idea if there is any sign of it now - must take another look, it is directly inline with shafts 2&3 around 150- 200 yards to the West (clearly shown on the 1928 map). I assume no. 1 shaft accessed the area affected by the 1878 explosion. Thanks for uploading the video.

@BrianDavies-b1q Hi, yes, I'll be going back to the Woold pit again very soon, I did assume that there were more shafts there, but I could only locate two while I was there. It was quite a challenge because it was heavily overgrown. I appreciate the information you have shared. If you have any other information about this mine please feel free to drop me an email on the address linked to this channel. Any help would be much appreciated, sir. Thank You

Nice video, i explored that site several years ago and there is a 3rd shaft on the site of the environmental unit with a large methane pipe coming out the cap. From that shaft you can clearly see the old railway lines where they would bring the coal tubs out the cage
