Crosby Bunkers: Full Exploration
Today we will be starting our journey at Blitz Beach located in Crosby Liverpool after which we will be doing a full exploration of Crosby Bunkers, a WW2 Battery installation.
Crosby Blitz Beach: History
Liverpool suffered extensive bombing during the early years of World War Two, being the second most heavily bombed city after London. This was due to the strategic importance of its docks, which were crucial for receiving foodstuffs and materials from the North Atlantic, especially from the United States. It is believed that the Docks managed around 90% of all imported goods for the war effort. Hitler recognized the significance of this non-military target, as Germany aimed to weaken the nation by cutting off its supply lines.
A significant amount of debris removed from the streets of Liverpool was deposited on the Crosby shoreline at Hightown beach to serve as a protective measure against coastal erosion. Even now, one can still find exquisitely carved stones along the coastline that were likely part of the ornamentation of Liverpool's impressive structures.
Crosby Battery installation: History
Crosby Battery, also referred to as Crosby Point Battery and Fort Crosby, was a military installation located between Crosby and Hightown in Lancashire, United Kingdom. This battery served the purpose of port defence and anti-aircraft defence during World War II. Prior to 1928, Crosby Battery operated alongside the neighbouring Seaforth Battery.
Crosby Battery was built on the sand dunes north of Crosby between March 1906 and October 1907. The fortification included three gun emplacements spaced 40 yards (37 m) apart, each with ammunition stored beneath. Initially, the guns consisted of two 6-inch (150 mm) breech-loading Mark VII guns, identical to those found at Fort Perch Rock across the River Mersey. Behind the positions were two barracks and soldiers' quarters situated behind the positions. Surrounding the battery were an observation post, a signal station, an officers' hut, a caretaker's accommodation, a bath house, and a workshop. An engine room, equipped with coastal spotlights, was constructed at a later time.

    Hi I used to live up In Haydock on Central drive, and a few years back one of my good friends his name was Ste Vaughn was found dead with his face down in a puddle and we never found out how he did actually die? If he was killed or if it was an accident he was only young aswell in his mid 20s .

      Hi, I'm sorry to hear that. If you're interested, I'm planning on returning to conduct another investigation there soon, We've had that name come through multiple times including the number 20 and water, we never could understand why. It's intriguing that you have mentioned this as it could relate to the Ste we had made contact with. Once again, sorry to hear about the loss of your friend. Thank you for this information, as it may answer some questions about the information we were receiving.

    Hi, I worked at Wood pit from the age of 16 until closure in 1971 when I moved to Parkside. Last week I took a look around the site and it certainly brought back memories for me. There were in fact 4 shafts, only 3 of them having headgears when I was there. The 2 shafts in your video are no's 2 & 3. The one closest to Vista road is no. 3 the upcast shaft and the one with the Coal authority warning sign is no.2. The workings accessed by this shaft were worked out but the shaft was maintained for emergency is case of an incident in no.4 shaft. I only existed via this shaft once. No.4 shaft can be found near the landfill gas plant to the south of the other shafts, I believe this shaft was sunk in the 1940's and gave access to various seams including Wigan 4', Higher Florida and Trencerbone where I spent most of my time underground. I did locate no. 1 shaft in the late 60's and it consisted of a circular brick wall with no cap, no idea if there is any sign of it now - must take another look, it is directly inline with shafts 2&3 around 150- 200 yards to the West (clearly shown on the 1928 map). I assume no. 1 shaft accessed the area affected by the 1878 explosion. Thanks for uploading the video.

      @BrianDavies-b1q Hi, yes, I'll be going back to the Woold pit again very soon, I did assume that there were more shafts there, but I could only locate two while I was there. It was quite a challenge because it was heavily overgrown. I appreciate the information you have shared. If you have any other information about this mine please feel free to drop me an email on the address linked to this channel. Any help would be much appreciated, sir. Thank You

    I live in St Helens now and you have introduced me to parts of it I did'nt know existed, very interesting stuff, and, when you drive around these areas you don't see or realise the history of what is there. The warm water part of the canal was something nobody has mentioned, you certainly would'nt want to do it now. I hve seen part of an old railway track where Morrisons (Baxters Lane) is and I knew that it used to have railway on it. Sutton Colliery might be an interesting explore to see if anything is still there, I remember the old gates to it and the wheels were still upright until it all disappeared, what a damn shame, I feel they could have left some of the wheels intact as a reminder of the history of what St Helens was reknowned for, coal and glass. I love St Helens and have never been happier anywhere else and I have lived in a few places.👍

    • @exploringwithjb
      @exploringwithjb 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @robw6505 Thank you so much. I will definitely be covering more Collieries including Sutton very soon. St Helens has such a rich history that is so often forgotten or not taught, and I think it's a huge shame. The railway you referred to is known as the Runcorn Gap Railway, I will be filming a multi part series on that railway soon. The hot water in the canal I loved as a child, the Hotties, was a fun place at any time of the year. So much has changed or vanished these days, and if I can help keep some of our local heritage alive, then I'm happy. Once again, my friend, thank you so much for your kind words and support,
