Bolt was so impactful to me as a kid, because it was the first time I had heard of cats being de-clawed and that sometimes people will do such a harsh thing and then just… leave. I couldn’t imagine doing something so devastating and then on top of that, ABANDONING them!
Other than that, I thought the idea of raising an actor dog to think that the super powers he was written to have was real was an interesting concept. And Bolt learning how to be a normal dog was awesome and adorable My younger sister and I just watched this movie recently and I just about cried when I finally realized that the song “I Thought I Lost You” was Bolt and Penny singing to each other!

The score in this movie was composed by THE John Powell! The same composer who did the How To Train Your Dragon trilogy, worked on several other DreamWorks films including Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, and The Road To El Dorado, and composed most of the soundtracks for Blue Sky studios. John Powell is a freaking legend and this score definitely shows that!
Also, you didn't even talk about what is arguably my favorite scene in this movie: when Bolt breaks out of the animal control truck and gets super excited when he thinks his powers actually worked, only to find out that Rhino unlocked the door and Bolt finally realizes that Mittens was right - leading him to lose confidence in himself until Rhino gives him a pep talk. Brillaint emotional scene right there.

Loved this commentary and I agree with every point. Bolt was one of my favorite movies as a kid and it's hard to watch as an adult because it makes me cry *everytime*.
The ending is exactly as you put it; real, just a girl and her dog dying in a fire. And while that is tragic and sad on its own, it's just a reminder at how loyal dogs are in real life. Dogs would actually die by your side rather than save themself, and it breaks my heart knowing that if I were ever trapped in a fire my dog would die with me. Humans do not deserve that kind of loyalty after how we treat animals, that kind of bond is beautiful and this movie really touched so many bittersweet notes that just overwhelm me on every rewatch.

Bolt will always be one of my alltime favorites, especially the score by John Powel. A small detail I notice not many people mention if any, is that the photo at the end holds even MORE significance. When Penny was filming the show, she'd take a picture with Bolt at the end of every adventure. To me, that final photo is solidifying the end to the adventure they had throughout the whole movie reuniting and changing their lives for the better, and now that the adventure is done, they can relax in their lives together.

I'm glad more people are coming around to this movie after all these years. I remember loving it when it came out back in 2008, and like you, I think it still holds up as well. You also raise a good point about how Bolt's emotional climax feels a lot more real than most other animated movies. The only other time a film's climax hit that hard for me was with Zootopia, and even then, like you mentioned, it still required a twist villain with a big government conspiracy to make all of the moving parts come together, whereas with Bolt, it's just a girl and her dog trying to survive. Plus, it's the firefighters who ultimately rescue them, not themselves, which gives the characters involved a level of vulnerability I don't see very often, especially in stuff aimed at kids.

I just rewatched it and its a very well made film. I love how the beginning and end of the film is actually the bolt tv series in universe and all the little things that build up through the film. Penny having to make an adult choice to let Bolt go because of actual people who work on the show might lose thier jobs cause of cancelation. I love how when you meet Mittens its slowly hinted at throughout the film she used to have an owner and she realized bolt isnt actually super and when he comes to terms with that he cant believe the 1 thing that cant be fake is his owner while Mittens on the other hand has every reason to believe she is an actress. It makes matters even worse when Penny does end up getting a replacement for the show. And Bolt becomes more of a dog growing closer to Mittens as friends. I love how other animals recognize bolt bit cant understand why then ending it with pigeons saying never seen him in my life. I love that when Bolt sees penny again he is all dirty his tatoo is all the way gone. She instantly knows its her dog its symbolic to him not being a part of the fantasy anymore while the replacement bolt is new and has a shiny new tattoo. I lile how the Bolt replacement is the reason the fire starts because he grew up like a normal dog making it his fault while Bolt has probably been playing this role since he was brought home. I like how characters will ask advice from the hamster only for the hamster to bring up hollywood cliches and also reenact popular movie scenes. I like that there is a nemo reference that makes sense in context of the scene. The way Bolt ends up saving both Penny and him is very clever. Lastly i thought it was clever to end the film with the family quitting the roles of the show and we see the new penny and its like retcon that she had face surgery from the accident in the last cliffhanger but in actuality they needed a new actress that could honestly do better with the new Bolt dog actor. Its a parallel to the actual Penny and Bolt just being a normal Girl with her dog. Also ending it off with Aliens is pretty great.

Bolt’s a very sweet movie with a good heart it’s not one of Disney’s best , but it’s such a charming movie.
However I made this discovery recently and comparison. With another movie Puss in Boots 2. Think of it for a second
-(Bolt/Puss) A Main character who thinks he is a hero , but is brought down a few pegs and doesn’t think they are the hero they were, but learns to appreciate who they really are.
-(Mittens/Kitty) A Cat who gets declawed by their previous owners and has a hard time trusting anyone, but they learn to open up to others and learns to Trust the main character. They Bond overtime and even have a splitting up the characters before the climax.
-(Rhino/Perrito) a delusional comic relief who looks up to their Hero and what they do and is the third wheel that keeps the gang of three together.
    - They travel to their location with a Map and grow to bond and trust each-other. And at the end they get the happy ending they deserve.
WTH DID PUSS IN BOOTS 2 RIP OFF BOLT OR AM I LOSING MY MIND? 😂

Tropes exist for a reason: they are story-telling tools. Some are overused, but then there are also inverted tropes. What we have on the surface of Bolt is The Hero's Journey. Like, literally. However, even though he returns to the exact same world and people as he left, Bolt's adventure gives him a new perspective on everything. Then, in Penny's moment of need, the only way for Bolt to save her was to combine the fake skills with real knowledge, but that's not even the best part of it. That climax takes place in the real world. Fires are real, and children dying in them is also very real. This is the best part because it's so believable, it could've actually happened. And that's the part that makes me cry.

When I picked up my elderly German shepherd from the shelter for the first time (she was 9 & riddled with heart worms, cancer, hip dysplasia) I sang "Barking at the moon" to her as we drove home, and the day that she was euthanized at almost 13, I sang it right there with her again, "I have got so much to give, I swear I do... I may not have 9 lives, but this one feels brand new." I think what I love about it the most is how real the movie is. There's a certain level of elevated sentience they gave the animals, but it's a story that takes place in what feels like real life. They could've even made it live action for the most part like Babe. Most people probably feel it makes it forgettable but I feel it's what makes it stand out

I grew up with Bolt. It was my entire childhood, I must’ve watched it at least 200 times. And I’m not even exaggerating there. It and Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron (yes, the ORIGINAL, the tv show is okaaayyyy but doesn’t hold a candle to the original) were my personality when I was little. And even as I get older (even though I’m only 16, and still very much a kid), I will continue to show my love for this movie, because I did and still do love it. To this day, one of my favorite things to do on days where I’m feeling especially depressed is go back and rewatch this movie. It’s nostalgic, adorable, and because of it’s sad moments, the happy ending is all the more heartwarming. I remember being like, 9, and always asking my dad to play ‘I Thought I Lost You’ in the car while I was driving literally anywhere. I still haven’t even watched the video, gonna go do that now. But I’ve literally never found a group of people that will valiantly fight for the idea that Bolt is an amazing movie.

This video showed up in my recommended. So good job, probably! I have like the exact middlepoint combination of yours and Schaff's feelings toward Bolt I found Bolt because of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. There's only one half-direct mention of the fact that Kitty is declawed in The Last Wish, so I looked up her backstory and then scrolled by a video of MITTENS revealing her backstory. I thought it was cool to depict something like this in family movies, since it can play a narrative role and also teach kids early that declawing is bad, so I watched. Pretty lame reveal to be honest...
I don't remember how I ended up watching other scenes, but I saw the trailer park one and also the scene where Bolt and Mittens met for the first time. Coming right off of The Last Wish, I was absolutely loving more cute animal shenanigans, and I was also REALLY shocked to see Bolt lift Mittens over a freeway. The scream is what really drove it home.
I was also surprised that this movie looked kind of awesome, because I've thought ever since I've seen ads that Bolt is actually a movie about a "super dog," and I always thought that was the lamest thing ever. Never wanted anything to do with it. But after seeing these scenes, I was pretty curious, so I tried watching it. HATED the intro, I am not wooed into submission by orange lighting and animated puppy, or little girl naming the thing before she even meets him. HATED the opening sequence, because it was again seeming like a super dog movie. It went on long enough that I started to think it was actually like that for the whole movie (which would be painful, because OBVIOUSLY the drama and cheesiness is turned up for that opening sequence). I questioned reality to my gf, and she explained what the movie was about. Then I committed to watching it. The opening was way more bearable once I knew what I was in for.
(The first thing I said to her when I was done was, "I was gonna be pissed if they didn't adopt the cat")
I don't like any of the human stuff in this movie. I don't care how vital it is to the main plot, I just like seeing these animals doing animal things, as if they were as intelligent as people but still bound to their own species' impulses. Love the way the birds are animated, just like you said. Bolt and Mitten's relationship is adorable and I love watching all of their interactions, and I have that Barking at the Moon song saved on my phone so I can listen in the car. Course, I'd throw Rhino into a wood chipper, but I mostly love everything between the moment Bolt meets the birds and the moment Mittens reveals her backstory. Before and after that entire part of the movie, I just don't want none of it
For reference, I first watched this movie about 3 weeks ago. I don't have to apologize for or doubt myself because of nostalgia, baby. The fact that Mittens invited Bolt to live with her indefinitely...I mean, Jesus, it's too cute man. Kinda bothered that her declawing backstory has so little to do with the story (same goes for Kitty Softpaws). If I had to guess, it's a way of physically representing how she has to present a tough image to the world in order to cope with and survive in the life of an alley cat, while she doesn't actually belong there. Kind of thin, though. The declawing bit just feels like a cheap trick to pull at the audience's heartstrings, but it didn't work on me. I do tear up watching her and Bolt in that montage, though, knowing they've both had it rough and are so happy just trying to make each other happy. Bolt returning Mittens's favors and finding her a ball of yarn hits hard
Also after watching The Last Wish, this lyric just happens to have a stronger effect on me:
"I may not have nine lives, but this one feels brand new"
aaaaaaaaaaaanyway, hopefully that was a mildly entertaining read. I like reading other people's takes, and this video was a good listen too. Made me want to look up Schaff's take, for one thing, and I gotta say...I sympathize more his take a lot-

I really do mean it when I say that you, Jonah, really do feel like the next Schafferillas. You just give a whole unique energy to animated movie reviewing that I feel is a little lost. And Schaff is great by all means, but pretty much only personal problem I have watching him usually is that I feel like he's very critical of things that don't necessarily need absolutely extreme criticism. And that's fine, it's his opinions and that's ok, but I feel like he sometimes thinks things should be more high standard than what they're trying to be or doesn't give something enough credit where it's due. But you seem to look more on the bright side with certain movies and animation and I really like that. Plus you're just like, coherent in your points and funny. That diss track didn't need to go so hard but was legit funny.
Anyway, I'm rambling but keep up the good work man. I first found you with the Blue Sky ranking vid and you make some great stuff.

Bolt was one of my favorite movies as a kid, I can't believe I haven't thought about it in years. On the surface, I can understand why people dismiss it as a generic forgettable kids movie, but it's really not. It's got heart all the way through and feels more genuine than any Disney movie I've seen in the last 5 years. It's a very underrated movie.

Bolt was the first movie I ever saw in theaters! I have several pictures from then, we watched it on 3D (as one of my only experiences with that kind of thing, I wasn't well off as a kid) and I genuinely remember it so fondly. As you narrated the fire scene I found myself tearing up, although the last time I saw this movie was probably like a decade ago in a TV rerun or something. I might need to rewatch it soon. Thank you for making this video!:) It was very enjoyable and it brang back good memories.

I remember falling in love with this movie the moment it came out. I was 10 years old. I watched it every day for weeks, annoying the CRAP out of my siblings. I am now 24 and Bolt still makes me cry whenever I rewatch it. It is truly an incredible movie that will always have a special place in my heart.

    0:31 same same. i hate rio 2.
also your review made me really happy, and kinda emotional tbh. I grew up with this movie, and was kinda upset to see so many people not appreciating it. It isn't the best but is still a classic to me, and I'm glad to see someone else share my opinions. :]

@@anonymouslucario285 I never said that. I just agree with Jonah that Rio 2 sucks, Bolt is underrated, and Schaff was wrong (in my opinion) on both accords. I never once said I hated him.

this video is so GOOD !! i’ve loved bolt ever since i was 5, which was about a couple years after it came out in 08. it was honestly one of the first movies where i could clearly remember how it felt to watch it for the first time (if that makes sense), along with the other dozens of times i watched it throughout my childhood. anyways, it’s safe to say that it definitely deserves sm more recognition and love. such a good movie!!

Bolt is my childhood movie. I never knew the movie’s name because I was too young to remember it. Growing up I always knew the movie as the dog with a lightning bolt. It wasn’t until like sometime during Highschool that I learned the name of the movie. What I’m getting at is that, the movie left such a impact on child me that even though I didn’t know the name I still loved it growing up which goes honestly shows how good the movie was.

Not only is the execution of the quote "unoriginal/generic plot" done in the best way possible, but also it is unique in the way that the "unoriginal" were brought together in a way that was new, therefore making it original

I remember I was only... 5, maybe? when I first watched the movie. I had absolutely no idea what was going on, and my mom had to explain how they were dying in the climax with the fire. I also gained a fear of fire and smoke from that scene that I subconsciously remembered even though I forgot the movie it was from until a few years ago lolol
But I DO remember sobbing my eyes out even though I hadn't the slightest clue what was going on like that was crazy emotional, so yeah I think this movie deserves WAYYY better
As a dog lover, 10/10 absolutely recommend

New subscriber! I'm so glad that there's someone who agrees with me that Bolt is such a hidden gem! I remember me wanting a dog so badly after watching this movie more than 15-20 times I hardly remember. But in the end, we got a plushie of Bolt in a Disney store and it made me so happy! I still have him to this day no scratches. This movie must be known to more people for how good this is! And that dis-track on Schaffrillas was fire!
And of course, I do know that this was a joke but wasn't aware of the accident. I sure hope he's doing alright and may his brother and best friend rest in peace.

I always like to remind people about John Powell's filmography because I think he needs more recognition. John has worked on not only Bolt, but also co-composed films like Chicken Run and Shrek, also solo-composing movies like Rio, How To Train Your Dragon, Robots, Solo: A Star Wars Story, etc., all amazing scores.

I remember when I was little, I was absolutly obsessed with this movie, but I didn't know where to get it and I never thought of asking for it. The only place I knew that had it was the only corner store the small town my grandparents live in. That place closed down a while back tho and younger me was devastated to learn about that lol. But every time my grandparents said that my older siblings and I got to chose a movie to rent from the store each, I always chose Bolt. I watched it so many times that my older siblings got so fed up with me so I watched Bolt alone lol
Even to this day I still regard Bolt as one of my top favourites for movies to watch and to recommend to people. And even if it's an older movie the 3D animation is so well done :)

Just rewatched with my fiancé last night. Legitimately cried, laughed, and everything in between. You’re dead on about the great writing, especially for a Disney movie. Obviously this was written with a specific familial audience in mind, and that lends itself to certain tropes and narrative themes that restrict its flexibility (especially when associated with the Disney brand)… however, this movie’s thoughtfulness and genuine emotional beats floored me. I’ll always respect and (to be honest prefer 90% of the time) a great Wes Anderson or Scorsese film, but for a wholesome, uplifting, entertaining, and emotional animated Disney movie, I’m always coming back to Bolt first and foremost. Period. ❤️❤️
