Good stuff. The 1996 graphics and color scheme is an eye-catcher. Bravo!
Thanks!

Thank you so much for your breakdown.
I'm looking for a 250 and this video and the previous one was so much help! Thanks!
made a BIG difference only YZ 250X Mine was retarded. Chased that low end burble. Now its gone! Thank you...I love our channel!!
Nice! Thats good news! Thanks man 👍
@@UpAllNight91 been sharing your channel far and wide.... here's the bike running: th-cam.com/users/shortsWhJ76FDXX7M
My 15 engine marks was lined already, for the spark plug try an iridium spark plug with a OEM recommended Heat range. 🔧
Yamaha went with retarded ignition time and low compression head to be able to burn any junk gas around the world. Thanks for the tip of the ignition timing, (I did not think of that one as I mod my bike.). Thanks for the after market throttle also. I wanted to make mine a shorter throw. I got 2 good tips from you man. Here are mine.
1) You can have .0085" cut off your low compression head gasket surface to match the 2010 head, (I have them both and measured them).
2) spark plug heat range is used for jetting the bike, so I would stick with the 8 heat range plug if you jet your carb, because you go by plug color, (light brown color) for the main jet selection. If you get a colder 9 plug, it will run darker, and you may end up jetting your carb lean. Put the 8 back in and jet the carb well, and you should find about 2 more hp. They are always rich from the factory.
I have always liked the 94 motor but wr not yz and port polised pipe bigger jets and reeds and weighted flywheel mine rips i also have a 91 but it felt like a 125 compared to the 94 but it seized the main bearing so now its getting built im gonna do different port and polish work and take the head down a titch and a lectron and im gonna try different reeds and pipe i like lower range torque with the wrs and the higway gears it doesn't need much more top
Wow, theses days its getting so hard to find parts for the 90s bike.
@@UpAllNight91 I know if I could find a good 01 ktm 380 exc I'd probably get it I also have a 86 big wheel 200 but has has been fairly easy to get parts for even the wrs you can usually find a tusk or other aftermarket company to get something that works but factory is still best
Please do more of these breakdown vids 👌👌👌
Super helpful!
We want to see you riding it!
Very interesting take on the timing adjustment. I just got back on a YZ250. I had lost that lovin feeling on my 4 stroke. You mention that hesitation, almost like it has a jetting issue right before it really hits. I have it. I bought mine used but it is solid. I just installed a APEX head to help it out. It is a 2015. I heard it helps with the need for race gas. Thoughts on the Apex? squish is in range. Happy to go offline if you wish. I am sea level also. So hard to get help on this stuff since everybody is in Cali and not at sea level.
Hello. The apex head with a proper squish can help with the need for race fuel. As long as the compression is not too high. I was able to cure the worst of the pinging with a good head on a KX250 2006, however it wasnt till she got some race gas in the mix that I was able to jet it sharper and get the benefits of having a good squish band clearance. You can always email me at upallnight91@hotmail. Enjoy!
Legend cheers. I've gotta 2010 pimped out..thanks for the tip I was just doing my timing
Yes sir! Thanks for watching!
When I first got my 05 yz250, it had a ton of power. I mean almost uncontrollable power when the powerband kicked in. But I either got used to it, or after a few top ends, it doesn't seem to have that wild powerband anymore. It's still plenty fast and I'm pretty sure the powerband is working. It might be the Apex head. I'm gonna check the needle position soon.
Hello. What came to mind when I was reading your comment was pipe. The pipes do get carbon costed on the inside after a while and that kinda saps some power out of them. What type of premix oil are you using?
@@UpAllNight91 I use Lucas Oil and it has a new Fatty pipe. I’ve never restuffed the spark arrester though
Do you have to use a spark arrestor? I like none spark arrestor silencers better for overall power
@@UpAllNight91 they check every race
Oh. Ok.
If you do this your always going to want new fresh fuel every run. I’d even add a splash of race fuel.
I agree!
@@UpAllNight91 I don't.
2005 is when it all begins
Yes for the most part. Some very small changes in 2006 but nothing major
great video. would love to see more from you on yz250
I have a 2014 w/35 hours. Bills pipe,v3 reeds recluse clutch & fmf shorty muffler. Race gas. If I line up those marks, will I gain more torque?
If you line up the marks you will gain snap and torque. It will feel more lively everywhere actually.
For a stock engine 2024, do you think it might produce some pinging?@@UpAllNight91
Awesome to see your still enjoying the YZ! I just picked up my 2021> YZ 250 . Had to drive 300 mi to get it if that tells ya anything. Great vid and super appreciate your time and knowledge! My questions are a plenty , 1st what's your typical mix ratio % and fuel non-ethanol or just reg 87/prem.? What's the best break in maintenance in your opinion ? I have both track and trail available and I just want to do it right from the start ! Any advice always welcome sir. Thanks !
I personally always use 91octane and use yamalube at 32:1, as far as break in I've had mechanics tell me run it no different than a broken in bike and some say take it easy the first 5 hours
Hello. Thanks for commenting. Like you I drove like 300 miles for mine too! And smokers are growing in popularity so its now a supply and demand thing. I run 32:1 (4 ounces of oil per gallon) of Maxima K2. But really depends on the rider, like for my wifes bike I runs 40:1 because shes not as fast and less oil helps extend the plugs life for her. My fuel mix is 50% 93 pump (that has 10% ethanol) and 50% 110 leaded race fuel. For break in... Really its more about heat cycles in my research and opinion. 2 or 4 stroke my break in's are run through like this... 3 heat cycles on the stand, get her fully warm on the stand then shut her off for 15 minutes or so and do the next heat cycle. Then on the very first ride I make it a short ride (10 minutes or so). I ride her normally for the most part but I do try to avoid extended wide open throttle pull, just short wide open pulls when needed. I come back in, check the bike out and if everything is good (coolant level and such) I then consider the break in complete. One thing I will suggest is swappin that OEM piston for a wiseco. The OEM YZ250 piston is known to crack the skirt off on faster riders but the wiseco holds up well. I have cracked like 3 of them before moving to wiseco for good.
I just recently purchased a 2000 yz250 that seems to be fairly low hours and possibly a new top, but it makes a strange sound (rattle-clunk noise) at idle and there are several videos out there with that vintage 250 sounding the same. My question is: all the armchair mechanics say that it's piston slap or wristpin bearings or crank bearings ORRRRR....that's just the way those 250's sound and it's normal and I'd really like a professional opinion before I either destroy it on the track or needlessly tear into a rebuild. Btw, it feels smooth and powerful and my only concern is because of the sound (stock pipe and FMF silencer).
Does the sound soften up at idle when the clutch is pulled in?
@@UpAllNight91 the only time I hear it is at idle...clutch or not.
@@imabeliever244 yes. But does it go away when you pull the clutch in at idle. I ask because these bikes get clattery when the clutch basket wears in
@@UpAllNight91 the sound is there with the clutch in or out. It doesn't have any abnormal vibration at any rpm and doesn't seem to lack power at either end either...but it sounds like a lot of other yz250's I've listened to on TH-cam...like something is loose internally.
@@imabeliever244 ok. Then maybe its just the normal sound of the bike. But if it was mine, i like peace of mind. So i would pull the cylinder, check the crank and bearings. If alls well toss in a new piston and know shes got the bill of health
Does Bevis do that all day? Whats his problem now? Did it rain again?
lol, hes just a noisy rooster. We have like 3 within ear shot in my neighborhood and they all go at it all day.
BTW I'm 230 lbs and 6'3 so figure rear spring might be necessary lol. I printed out Yamahas free owners manual as well for specs purposes and breakdown.
yes. At 230 I wouldnt want anything lighter than 5.5kg out back and 0.48kg up front. If your faster and push it hard you may even need more than that but that should be good enough to start with and go from there.
@@UpAllNight91 No doubt. At 220 myself, my stock 2019 YZ250 was so low in the front with the stock springs, it was un-ride-able.
Can you recommend any mods to help with the 2stroke vibrations hehe
BRP racing makes a upper triple clamp with rubber mounting for the bars, (I can tell it helps, as my hands don't go numb much with it), and the quality is fantastic. But a better fix is to have the crank trued, (requires a total engine disassembly). It is probably at high limit for "out of true".
Hey up all where do you ride since bartow closed
Hey turbo! Was riding 74 but that closed. Been hitting dade during Sunday extended track practice, croom, spyder, and Orlando mainly lately
@@UpAllNight91 had my bad knee replaced a shoulder surgery on both shoulders plan on riding soon
Yeah let me know when your ready to ride again!
That dang rooster ear raped me!!!!! Lol
Crap i know
@UpAllNight91 awesome video tho. I watched your other vid on adjusting the timing as well. Both are GREAT videos. Thank you, it helped alot
@@usmc03 Thanks man, and thanks for watching!
Does a 2000 yz250 not have the marking on the case? I swear I can’t see anything aside from maybe a very slight ridge on that raised part but it doesn’t look like a marking
Yes a 2000 should. Thats really all it is ,a slight ridge. And not easy to spot out or see either
@@UpAllNight91 okay so my indicator is just to the left of that ridge. What about using a dial and lining it up with the fly wheel like is recommended method?
@@jamesonclark8306 there's nothing wrong with using a dial indicator to adjust timing. The mark on the case is really just a quick way to get it real close. Not everyone has the dial indicator to use the flywheel and it can be a little tedious to find the center of the top dead center but if you have one and have the know how then why not.
Do you work on street bikes and jet ski's?
I do work on street bikes but I no longer fool with skis. Too time consuming, I have too many bikes lined up for work
@UpAllNight91 You do it all.

I just cant wrap my head around why there is a blue sticker on a blue tank 😐
LoL. I know. But the sticker is shinnier and saves the tank from getting scuffed up like crazy so I said what the heck
So did you change the cylinder head? Or you are using the lower compression new head with the old timing? You only use race gas?
I rechambered the stock head down to the same CCs as the 2003 to 2010 US model and set the squish band clearance to around 0.040". And I run the timing with the marks perfectly matched up. I use 50/50 pump/race
@@UpAllNight91 Thanks! I appreciate the info
Do you shorten the spring for the slide on the carb?
Yes I did. I cut about 2.5 coils off of it for the quick twist throttle
Shorten the slide spring ? Why 🤷🏻♂️
What gas and pre-mix do you use?
I use a 50/50 even mix of pump gas and 110 leaded race fuel (cam2) with maxima K2 mixed at 32:1 (4 ounces per gallon)
