Today we are discussing the Night Lords vs White Scars! These events are from the short story Chase the Wind by Jon Flindall. Huge White Scars fan. I love how they seamlessly combined the cultures if ancient Mongolia, China, Korea and Japan in a single almost shaman warrior culture. I love the references their lore makes to the elements and nature making them all the better for their association with but not being a chaotic force of mindless savagery they are often accused of.
The cultural influence seems to be almost entirely mongolian, partly chinese. What part if any is Japanese?
@@Greatkingrat88 The Shinto elemental shamanistic aspects. And actually it's not mostly Mongolian it's perceived, quite inaccurately, as such. The beheading and swordsmanship style is Ancient Chinese. The hit and run battle tactics are Mongolian. The animal companionship is actually quite common in Asian cultures before and after the splitting of the original 18 Chinese clans. Mongolia and Japan FYI are the descendents of two those clans that broke off.
@@Greatkingrat88 I'd suggest researching the major Asian cultures if you are White Scars fan. It will give you better perspective on why they do things in the way they do them and where those aspects come from.
@@chrisbennett6236 Isn't shinto animism, as in believing all objects have a soul or a spirit of some sort? I haven't read anything like that in any of the white scars books I've seen. It more felt like general shamanism, which could be mongolian for all I know.
@@Greatkingrat88 Shinto is more complex than that. The elements and nature play a centralized role in the religion, probably why the Japanese keep everything so clean. Most of the gods in the religion represent an aspect of nature: sun, moon, storms, fire, water, earth, wind, plants, seas, mountains etc. Christianity believes in the human soul but it's not the central point to the religion.
At this point take my advice and go research their cultures and histories cause it sounds like you only have a vague idea of the cultures. But think about this Mongolians in ancient times were barbarians. Wild, unpredictable, undisciplined and pretty much did whatever they want without regard for consequences. The White Scars are disciplined and organized. They know the structure of their leadership and they respect it, that too is more on par with Japan specifically the code of Bushido.

Chris Wraight has done a great job on almost every chapter that he touches.
I just thought you'd like to know that as someone who lives with Asperger's syndrome I find your channel incredibly relaxing. The pace of the story really helps me to have chance to process the information and I really enjoy when you break the narrative and discuss what's happening and your personal insight.

I watched the Top Gear episode where they went to Mongolia the other day and I kept thinking to myself that it would awesome to see a giant dust cloud in front of furious storm following a legion of White Scars on bikes.
So... the battle between space Mongolians and Batman begins...
Not just Mongolia. They also incorporate the Chinese, Korean and Japanese cultures. Everything from religious ceremony to military codes. Contrary to popular belief but Mongolians weren't cultured or discipline or even particularly adaptable. If you study the White Scars you'll find that follow a samurai code, have the adaptability and grace the Chinese were known for and the precision tactical planning of the Koreans. And do me the ancient cultures not the modern ones.
Hell their shamanistic Psykers that specialize in elemental combat is much closer to the Japanese Shinto than anything the Mongolians ever practiced. Hell I'd be surprised if the people of Chagoris didn't worship Amaterasu, Tsukiyomi or Susanoo. Hell I'm positive they venerate the god of storms Susanoo given that his symbol is so similar to the White Scars.

Night lords are more like a combination of Vlad the Impaler and all the best 80s slasher movie villains.

I'd love to hear an Iron Warriors fight. I can just imagine some loyalist chapter closing in for close combat just to get mulched by bolter fire
Iron Warriors weren't that difficult to deal with and not all loyalists rely on close combat. However of the loyalists that do the Blood Angels would have the best shot of it as they use disruptive tactics to close the distance rather than more traditional charges or jump pack assaults. Codex compliant chapters promote scouts that are deemed ready to either a devastator, assault or tactical marine, barring specialty of course. Blood Angels only promote to devastator or assault, to be a tactical marine you must serve either as a devastator or assault marine. As such their tactical marines utilize the heavy weapons weapons of the devastators or the close combat weapons of the assaults.
Typically they use a mix of devastators and tactical to open fire on their enemies from extreme range from multiple angles either push the enemy into a specific location or lure them into one. At which point they use a mix of tactical and assault marines to launch directed strikes in the heart of the enemy lines and force the enemies to scatter. They have even been known to use specially modified Thunderhawks to launch these assaults with flybys or using large formations to drop from. This isn't a standard use of the assault and tactical marines but the havoc they can cause breaking apart enemy formations and pushing them back into the devastators fire lines can usually throw off the enemy formations and tactics to the degree that panic causes them to get sloppy.
Probably why Blood Angels chapters are always under numbers, they simply don't need them. Also probably why they were able to drive the post Chaos World Eaters back into the Warp with significantly fewer numbers. Getting sloppy on top of being reckless essentially negates numbers advantage. I actually would love to see GW animate one of these Blood Angels strikes.
Anyways, no this not a guaranteed victory but it would give them a better chance than most the other Astartes chapters. Plus it was the Sanguinius led Blood Angels that fought their way through Perturabo's fortress during the Heresy will little problems and escaped to be able to get Terra in time to defend it. Never did understand why Horus had Perturabo try to destroy the Blood Angels after his demon trap failed. Iron Warriors we meant to break defenses not trap fury incarnate
@@chrisbennett6236 I said SOME loyalist chapter not the imperiums assault specialists. And digging someone out of a hole is a lot harder than you'd think, just look at the seige of vracks, Those were just baseline humans
@@Blade40688 The Blood Angels are a loyalist chapter as are most their successor chapters. And they are well known for their close quarters prowess. They are disruption specialists not assault specialists, that would be the World Eaters.

Always loves me some night lords, would be epic if they worked something out with the Corona Nox and Curze. Though he wished to die or had foreseen it so perhaps best to leave it at that.
Reading about the White Scars puts the music of Conan the Barbarian in my mind. I feel The Great Khan would approve.

@@chrisbennett6236 honestly he's really gotten me into this, I've always enjoyed Warhammer, but his primarch Series in news, stories, audiobooks, you can tell that it's his passion. And you can really feel that in the videos, and it really has honestly just got me into this genre!

There are alot of 40k content creators and some are excellent with the lore but none of them sound like they enjoy it the way Rho does. Hell their even a few that are juvenile and sound more like they are bashing the lore. For real fans that's a sure way to piss them off not get them to watch your content. So how can they expect new people to get into? Majorkilla in particular is shooting himself in the foot. His lore is rarely accurate, he uses a rude, mocking tone, he has several one-sided rivalries with other 40k content creators and he pretty much bad mouths anyone and everyone that even just mentions 40k. But unfortunately most 40k creators are closer to him than Rho. Our young Wolf Lord is unique in the 40k TH-cam world.

that whole "broadcast torture" sounds like something Decimus of the 10th company would do. talos did it, and he'd definitely take a page out of Talos' book
Back in their earliest appearances in rulebooks they had Night Lords broadcasting recordings of torture over enemy communications. It's part of their primary strategy. Astropaths are just another channel of communications in the Imperium, so it's probably pretty common and has most likely been copied by other Legions by now as well. It was nice reading about it in the novels though, about time too.

The shamanistic theme music will work with Space Wolves, white scars, in some cases even the raven guard and salamanders and lamenters
I think you would enjoy the Dark Angels omnibus. It gets into the mentality of battle-brothers to those in the Inner Circle. Even Fallen who are brought to The Rock.

I was kind of hoping that the Night Lords jumped on the White Scars from the perfect shadow ambush, but the White Scars were just going so fast the Night Lords didn't get a hit and the White Scars just kept driving without knowing what happened.

I’ve seen comments about it before 😂 I guess it’s flattering some people think so. I think the quality and consistency of my uploads would probably be a bit better if I did! And I probably wouldn’t talk about things such as moving and getting engaged 😂. I understand it’s because I recommend people to read and purchase the stories for themselves first, but it’s like I say in every vid, I believe that’s the best way to enjoy the lore: by reading/listening to it for yourself. And also helping support gw and the authors ensures more lore for us in the future 🤷🏻♂️

It's part of the Faith and Fury storyline. The Word Bearers are leading it and are backed by the Iron Warriors, Alpha Legion and Renegades as usual planetside. But also, the Night Lords (those small warbands not fighting the Uthwe) are assigned to prevent reinforcements. So they use tortured Astropaths to block comms or blockade warp travel and redirect them into an asteroid field where they are ambushed. The White Scars after this story try and track the Night Lords down but fail to do so. They may be the wind, but Night Lords are the void. :p
Anyways, the delay in reinforcements work and Chaos wins this one after that embarassing fail by Abandon, yet again in Vigilus Ablaze. Apparently he only had so many Stargates to use for his master plan and when that ship was hit by an Elder ram ship the few left to be planted planetside got destroyed as well, foiling the perfect plan during the moment of victory, so he left Calgar live and gave the Imperials time to reinforce the planet. So it's nice to see a plan work. Not quite the Daemon World that Vigilus was supposed to be, but a good outcome of Imperials killing their own is just what Chaos likes to see.

I always wonder if what many traitors have said is actually true. That the current chapters are thin blooded weaklings and nothing like the original.legions. i cant remember where i've read it but the traitor astartes talked even with respect when refering to the old loyalist legions.

It might be a perception and pride sort of thing, too. The original legions defeated the full might of the traitor forces at their most deadly, while these chapters are largely pitted against comparatively minor threats and foes who are much less cohesive and motivated. Not to mention that the Legions were much more dominant over the early Imperium while current Chapters are more or less subject to Imperial bureaucracy.
So while the warriors themselves are fully on par with their Legion ancestors, the environment of warfare around them is much less taxing overall, and doesn't give them much of a chance to prove it.
It's usually the iron warriors that talk about thin blood and the glory days.
I could be completely wrong but i think i read it in the Night Lord omnibus. It might have been the soul hunter saying something like that when they raided the supplies of a loyalist chapter.

I think the nightlords are the best villians in 30k and 40k, they are actually horrific in nature even as loyalist they were dreaded by all, Dorn feared Konrad for good reason he was a beast and unpredictable.

I'm kinda surprised that we have all Primaris short stories already, with relatively new (to us) units
They have modified the lore stating that all Primaris start out in the Vanguard and then move on/stay there. Supposedly they are all qualified to fill at least 1 roll in the vanguard marines.
So in the fluff, via hand waving, the Vanguard predate the normal Primaris.
I mean, at least it sorta is similar to scout marines in most chapters then. I still prefer the idea of scouts being your most experienced and nasty people. So while the space wolves don't get cheap troop choices, they at least make more sense.

Oh there was no feint with the Mongols. They'd just shoot you in the face then get you to chase them, usually into an ambush. But it is still ironic.
A Night Lord vs Raven Guard book would be pretty dope
Curze believed his brother and the Ravens were superior to to him and his Night Lords as he was quoted as saying: "I merely use the shadows, my brother is their master." Now whether this is true or not is debatable. It could just be a case of Curze fanboying like he did with Sanguinius. Though iif the battle goes the way we think, we won't actually see most of it lol

VIII Legion still my favorite, HOWEVER white scars need more stories, point blank.
It always bothers me when CSM are put in one of these stories. They never seem like a genuine threat just someone to die to illustrate the strength of the chapter being focused on. It does not seem like any objectives are being achieved and the terminators die while just lumbering down a hall like some zombie movie extra. The warp talon at the beginning is an ambush specialist with surprise on his side versus a guy who is admittedly frozen and still fails to even get in a serious hit. Lightning claws verses a knife and the knife wins? Just kinda seems silly.
The only thing the night lords wont do to win is fight fair
