It’s so sad that Lovecraft died not knowing how important his writing would become. I will never forget the first time I read his collection of short stories and was hooked. Thank you for blessing us with your mythos.
I made mistake of buying his "non cleaned up" version aka "what he ACTUALLY wrote in his handwriting". Also I'm not a native english speaker so you can imagine how hard it was to get into those stories lol. Maybe I should 've gone for the modern translations instead with actual understandable english lol. XD
It honestly does break my heart knowing this. He had such a vision for a genre unlike any other. An important and deeply fascinating genre. What's more fascinating than coming to terms with your smallness in the universe? But he never got to see just how important his work has become... we can only hope he is watching us from the cosmos, and is happy to see the love we have for his works. Rest in Peace H.P. Lovecraft. May you dream softly in R'yleah, and may we all come dream feverishly with you.
It was first picked up by the French Navy, a radar signature unlike anything that's been seen before almost structure-like in appearance. At first thinking it was a technical glitch, commanding officers ordered another sweep and it confirmed the readings. An encrypted transmission came to NATO of the highest priority, building-like structures have been found on the sea floor of the northern coast of Africa. A manned team of the best marine biologists and submarine pilots was put together to explore the location. This is how you first heard of it anyways. You've never done well in school and being born into a working class family made the military the best option for you out of high school. Scoring decently on your ASVAB at least gave you some options and the Navy is what appealed to you the most. During training your SO found your knack for underwater piloting and the last 6 years you've been awarded as one of the best neclear sub pilots. You were excited to say the least when you were contacted by NATO to lead this mission especially with the idea of a possible Atlantis running through your thoughts. You pilot the team of scientists down but once you reach past 200 feet something feels off. These waters shouldn't be this dark at this depth, you look at your temperature gauge and the temperature is in the low 30s which is much too cold for being this close to the Mediterranean. You feel a chill and you are about to abort mission when one of the biologists points out the first building in your searchlights. With the feeling passing you decend in the unnaturally cold and dark area. The scientists around you a frantically scribbling notes and taking measurements while you notice the architecture. It definitely ancient but at the same time look more advanced then current skyscrapers. You're in awe of the city, your radar confirms your assumption. A city it looks like of concentric circles to which one geologist takes note of. They urge you deeper into the city center all but confirming your suspicions that this is Atlantis. As you reach the center that feeling comes back to abort but now you ignore it to further discovery. As you all reach the city center, it seems off the buildings are more destroyed and have no traces of coral or plant life on them. A flashing light tells you that its picking up low level amounts of radiation, but nothing harmful. Mines start to appear as you reach the city center, big enough to destroy aircraft carriers. You have to maneuver around them to head further in, something draws you there now a feeling you cant explain. You look back at your crew and they have glossed over eyes no longer taking notes. You try to get out but your hands no longer follow your will pulling you closer. You frantically look around at your instruments and see that radiation is now in dangerous levels for long exposure and the temperature is below freezing. The sub finally comes into view of the city center at the first thing you notice is a large gaping circular hole in the very center covered with slightly glowing metal mesh over the top. Flanked by four statues at least 100 feet high carrying unfamiliar swords. The northern one left arm is missing and the southern one's head is missing. You direct the sub against your will toward a set of gears off to the left. You turn your head back towards the team and see that they have fallen unconscious. You are directly above the chasm and arm your small torpedoes at the gears. You fire and your heart sinks as all you can do is watch the explosives head toward the target. A barley audible boom echoes through your sub as the glowing grate slowly reels back into the ground. You suddenly gain control of your body again and start to set a course towards the surface again as you hear a scream behind you from the now conscious crew. You look back at her and she points in front of you. You look back and see a set of eyes, the largest you've seen stare back at you.
